The frigate Medusa was completed in 1806, launched in 1810, and saw action in the Napoleonic wars. In 1816, it set sail from French to its ultimate location in Senegal to repossess it from the British. Along with cargo, there were almost 400 people on board. What no one knew, however, was that there was an incompetent captain on board with dubious skills.The ship was caught in a storm off the coast of Mauritania. After being damaged from hitting rocks and multiple attempts to relaunch it, it couldn't move. Soon, it was discovered that there was a shortage of lifeboats. Most of the crew and some of the passengers made their way to the lifeboats, saving about 250 people. That left about 149 others on board. Crew members left on board scrambled to build a raft for the others. The raft was launched and tied to one of the lifeboats. The hope was that everyone would make it to land, almost 60 miles away. The horror came, when the captain ordered the raft to be cut loose, claiming, that it was slowing everyone else down. That left the raft survivors to their own devices.Multiple days at sea brought on starvation, death and disease. People starved to death, and acts of desperation came about, such as the weak, but alive, being thrown overboard, and even cannibalism. Many days later, when survivors were finally rescued, there were only 15 people left alive, with 5 of them dying soon afterwards. News of the disaster quickly reached France, where both the government and the people were thoroughly outraged. Newspapers covered the disaster, and eventually there were trials prosecuting the captain and the crew for negligence. This can be considered as the first documented sea disaster. In 1818, 27 year- old Theodore Gericault was so moved by this disaster, that he painted his masterpiece, The Raft of The Medusa. To this day, the painting, which is enormous in size and almost the size of the raft itself, hangs in the Louvre. This is my first attempt at program music. It was my hope that I captured the mood, the feeling, and above all, in all good program music, that my composition told the story.

Originally recorded on the Reg Strikes Back album in 1988, I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That became a staple of Elton's live shows in the 1990's.This transcription is taken from the opening night of the Medusa tour in Roanoke, Virginia 1999. The Medusa tour which began in 1999 would be the last tour to feature the song in the regular setlist rotation. You will find note-for-note accurate piano and vocal lines in the sheet music and chord notations. The performance features a very difficult solo section which stretches the songs length to nearly double its original runtime. The solo is full of lightening quick flourishes, cluster chords, trills, and an unstoppable eighth-note bass hand.

The overall character of these three miniature duets is nasty. This can help a young trumpeter practice accessing different emotions in their playing. Euryale is a study in trills. This sister, who was the second oldest, was vicious, with brass hands and fangs. She is especially noted for her bellowing cries, which is emulated in the obnoxious trills in the opening. Medusa was a beautiful maiden. Turning men to stone was defense mechanism for her, as the mythological story details she suffered at the hands of Poseidon. Of the three sisters, I thought Medusa was somewhat misunderstood. Her movement as a result is a little tamer, but still has a sense of unease. The movement is constructed as a round, which can help develop skills in timing and form. The final sister, Stheno, utilizes some more complex rhythmic figures. Stheno was arguably the most ferocious of the three sisters, having turned more men to stone than both of her sisters combined. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837492). Mortals, Gods, and Heroes was commissioned by Andrew Janack for the Maple Avenue Middles School Select Band in Saratoga Springs, NY. The school was doing a curriculum-wide reading project on Greek mythology. It seemed natural to create a wind ensemble suite based on three stories from Greek mythology. Each movement creates a miniature tone poem with clear motifs for each character in the myths. The characters include Athena (who makes a return in the final movement), Arachne, Orpheus, Charon the ferryman, Cerberus the three-headed dog, Sisyphus, Persephone, Eurydice, Perseus, and Medusa. The eleven-minute piece is colorful and inventive with plenty of special techniques in the percussion especially designed for middle school students. Mortals, Gods, and Heroes is in three movements: I. Arachne’s Web II. The Passage of OrpheusIII. Perseus and the Gorgon The score is formatted for 8.5 X 14 (legal) size paper and is 57 pages. The parts are formatted for 8.5 X 11 (letter) size paper.

Published by Amaya Rose (A0.1208591). The monotypic jellyfish species Stygiomedusa Gigantea is a rare deep-sea creature known for its massive size and elusive character. Written in 2022 and revised in 2023, Stygio was the first composition I had written for an ensemble. Like the Stygiomedusa, composing this piece was a rare, mystical, exciting experience as a young artist. The tune has a funk groove with swung sixteenths, and has been considered a standard for its form and chord progressions. The piece begins with a clear melody, shifts to a chorale featuring the melody of my alma mater at Christopher Newport University, then ends in a layered lava-lamp-esque collection of colors. Stygio offers improvisatory exploration and complex chord qualities over simple rhythms and an easy, pocketed feel.
