Janis Joplin (3’24)Compositional Notes I met Cuban-American Silvia Curbelo when we were both artists in residency at the Seaside Institute. When she shared a few of her poems I was immediately taken by the melodic flow of her words, the imagery and her strong delivery. W. S. Merwin has describe her work as …accomplished, daring, full of intelligence; it is the generous first manifestation of an authentic and original gift. This second set of songs from The Secret History of Water was composed for one of my private voice students, a coloratura soprano with excellent pitch retention and a secure range extension. I’m in love, I’m floating is a whimsical poem that captures the essence of being in love, acting foolishly and impulsively, yet somehow grounded in the knowledge that she is still capable of counting her options like black sheep. Last Call is my musical interpretation of Curbelo’s enigmatic poem contemplating different personalities in a bar. In the third song, Janis Joplin, here is another whimsical, yet deeply touching poem with nostalgia as the key component.I loved including a quote from Me and Bobby McGee. Only two variants rejected before the Paris premiere were printed separately in the appendix. A fascinating insight into Richard Wagner's thinking in terms of stage practice and into his very precise ideas of tonal balance, scenic details and role-conception are made possible by the quotations printed in key passages from his work On the Performance of Tannhäuser, published in 1852.For example, soon after the world premiere, Wagner suggested the deletion of bars in the orchestral part in the 4th scene of Act I, reasoning that […] due to the tremendous woodenness and self-consciousness of our usual supernumeraries, the impression of overwhelming liveliness, which was intended by me and which was to imply a heightening of the mood led up to by the liveliest manifestations of life, was not achieved. (piano reduction, p. 221)In the big ensemble scene at the end of Act II, Wagner puts in a comment at a certain passage, referring to the conductor and his great responsibility for tonal balance:The exclamations 'Ach, erbarm' dich mein!' require such a piercing emphasis that he [the performer of Tannhauser] as a mere, well-trained singer is not enough; it is but the highest dramatic art that has to provide him the energy of pain and desperation for an expression that must seem to break forth from the most gruesome depths of an awfully woeful heart, like a cry for salvation. The conductor has to ensure that the implied success is made possible for the principal singer by the most discrete accompaniment of the other singers as well as of the orchestra. EP!C!!! is an overture-sized orchestral work, originally commissioned by the West Michigan Symphony in 2016. It is intended as a higher energy opener or Act 1 closer. Program notes:Entirely by mistake, EP!C!!! is study in conflict. The piece began with a simple premise: compose a work which teases some of the pervasive clichés of today’s musical landscape (particularly the Hollywood or so-called media music scenes). Those clichés are primarily two gestures: 1) a progression of chords, often called the Chords of Destiny (consisting of i – VI – III – VIII) and 2) an endlessly repeating minor third ostinato.The conflict emerged internally when, after multiple false starts, I would quickly start to hate the piece because it felt like the clichés were being presented whole cloth, without the slightest sense of irony. I became deeply paranoid that the music wasn’t in on its own joke. When I would reverse course, it felt condescending, as though it were declaring from some erudite ivory tower that it was above those gestures. The trouble particularly with the latter is that clichés become so for a reason; something genuinely compelling becomes so ubiquitous that it loses some of the freshness, but that doesn’t erase what initially made it compelling. So the piece needed to somehow make fun of the fact that these gestures are cliché, while not dismissing their intrinsic value. And indeed, to celebrate that value!It took a long time to find my place between those two extremes, and ultimately I think the music that emerged is actually the conflict itself manifest. The two gestures are this constant presence, almost like a seductive temptation, that are initially regarded as distractions, but eventually become the music’s core. It’s as though the music finally decided to just relent and find something to truly love and celebrate within these overwrought ideas, haters be damned.However, for the sake of total clarity of intention, I couldn’t resist some on-the-nose tongue-in-cheek. The little cameo of Haydn’s lulling 94th Symphony 2nd movement tune is my way of saying you think classical music is epic??? Mr. Vandall's love for his own students is manifest in his recognition that new pieces needed to be created for contemporary students. His students, like most others, were starved for something new and fresh. Mr. Vandall's compositions were a gift to them, and also to us!My compositions for Elementary and Intermediate piano students build on the ideas of composers including Robert Vandall, Catherine Rollin, Martha Mier, Dennis Alexander, E. L. Lancaster, and others. My unique presentation continues the spirit of Robert Vandall in an important way: not only are the sounds new for today's students, the means of communcation has also been updated to meet the needs of today's students. Having all of the fundamental technique on the page in terms understandable to elementary piano students enables students to spend more time playing music rather than figuring out how to play music.I know full well the consequences of this approach: weaker reading in the short term, which is more than compensated for by correct (and more advanced) technique and ability to play more, and more interesting, music. The approach I have chosen restores playing music on the piano as the primary focus of the piano student/teacher relationship. Learning to read music is an important secondary goal, and will, in my experience, stand a better chance of being mastered by students who have played a greater ranger of the compelling music that is available today.(PS I started putting in all the finger numbers and hand positions for elementary students because I couldn't stand hearing and seeing the incorrect technical solutions these wonderful children came up with on their own. They deserved better.)
