Premiered May 2, 2013. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. Here is an excellent description of the 24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano by the composer, David Evan Thomas:24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano is a unified cycle of 24 contrasting pieces in all major and minor keys and may be played in sequence, by book, or excerpted in any order that makes musical sense. As in Chopin's 24 Préludes for piano, each major key is paired with its relative minor. But the 24 Lyric Preludes move softly down a descending ladder of thirds and flat-wise around the circle of fifths. Many aspects of the trumpeter's stock-in-trade are explored-double-tonguing, lip slurs, extremes of range and volume-as well as references to rhythms, patterns, and problems encountered by the orchestral player. The tonal spectrum may be widened further through judicious use of cornet and flugelhorn and creative choice of mutes. While there are a few notable links between movements (e.g., the Improvisation to the Nocturne; the return of the Prelude tune in the Finale), each piece deals with a characteristic style or musical idea, and most stand on their own. Capriccio is a composition in one movement for flute and piano, 4-5 minutes in duration. I composed Capriccio in 1986 while I was in graduate school at the University of Minnesota. It was first performed by several students at recitals and studio classes. The form is sonata-allegro. The first theme utilizes irregular, fragmented ideas passing back and forth between the flute and piano. The second theme consists of long, lyrical lines in the flute complemented by a syncopated pattern in the piano. Capriccio may be performed as a solo piece or paired with its companion piece, Pastorale.

Pastorale is a piece for flute and piano and is 6-7 minutes in duration. I composed Pastorale in 1986 while I was in graduate school at the University of Minnesota. It was intended as a companion piece to Capriccio, but it may be performed alone. The form is ABA. A haunting melody with sustained notes in the flute is accompanied by a slow moving ostinato in the piano. The middle section has a quicker pace and contains fragmented ideas echoing between the flute and piano in higher registers.

Dream Trajectories was composed for Dr. Joseph Henry, and was premiered by Dr. Henry in at the University of Minnesota.Dream Trajectories was inspired by dreams and how we experience them. In dreams, the laws of nature and physics do not always apply--at least not in the way they normally do. Cause and effect can be reversed, or done away with. The same events can be played out repeatedly with different results. The familiar becomes unfamiliar, and we may have uncanny insights and magical abilities.Time takes on a different quality in dreams, too. Scenes from a long time ago can be juxtaposed with recent events. The passage of years can occur in a blink. Sometimes there is no perception of time at all, and we simply experience events without any reference to time.And sometimes dreams are scary.

It is scored for SATB voices with multiple divisi sections and soprano/mezzo soprano solos and closes with SATB double choir and soli. The piece may be sung a capella or with antiphonal brass choir (available separately). A rhythmic middle section alternates 3/8 and 2/8 figures juxtaposed with the original motif within four-beat measure units. The piece was premiered by the choirs of the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1996.
