Wiegenlied (Lullaby,Berceuse, Cradle Song), Op. 49, No. 4, is a song for voice and piano by Johannes Brahms which was first published in 1868.in a set of 5 pieces for voice and piano. It is one of the composer's most famous pieces.Sometimes known as Guten Abend, gut' Nacht, (Good evening, good night) which are the first words of the song.Brahms based the music of his Wiegenlied partially on S'Is Anderscht, a duet by Alexander Baumann published in the 1840s. It was dedicated to Brahms's friend, Bertha Faber, on the occasion of the birth of her second son.Brahms had been in love with her in her youth and constructed the melody of the Wiegenlied to suggest, as a hidden counter-melody, a song she used to sing to him.Simrock published Brahms's Op. 49 in November 1868. This is an organ transcription of the Brahms Op. 122, No 6 chorale prelude, O Wie selig seid ihr doch, ihr Frommen, Â This beautifully complex organ prelude is part of a collection of chorale preludes penned by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1896, just after the death of his dear friend, Clara Schumann. Â About this same time Brahms learned that he had pancreatic cancer, which would prove fatal less than a year later. Â These pieces are complex, profound musical statements that contemplate eternity--a capstone, if you will, of Brahms life as a man and as a musician.This piece, No. 6 of the 11 published posthumously in 1902, is presented here transcribed for easier performance than URTEXT versions of the piece, primarily by shifting voicing to facilitate easier reading in several measures, as well as providing a discrete pedal line, again, to facilitate performance. Â The suggested registration is made to utilize a melody coupler (found on many modern digital instruments) to emphasize the chorale melody rather than create a discrete solo line.

In 1910, in Bath, Somerset, the English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly initially wrote the words to Danny Boy to a tune other than Londonderry Air. One story is that his sister-in-law Margaret Enright Weatherly (AKA Jess) sent him a copy of Londonderry Air in 1913 and Weatherly modified the lyrics of Danny Boy to fit its rhyme and meter. A different story has Jess singing the air to Weatherly in 1912 with different lyrics. Yet another story is that Frederic did not set the poem to any tune, but that, in 1913, Margaret, who, with her husband Edward Weatherly, was living at the Neosho mine near Ouray, Colorado in the US, set it to the Londonderry Air which she had heard as a child in California played by her father and other Irish railway workers.Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular songs of the new century.
