Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

She was a friend and former principal flute in the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (andCongressional Gold Medal recipient for her service as a WWII Women's Air Service Pilot aEUR WASP). Since thepremiere of Requiem in 2009, several of my friends have asked me to transcribe Prayer for their instruments. It hasbeen used for weddings, funerals, offertories, and preludes.Prayer precedes the final verses of Psalm 19 in the Requiem, and it introduces the Psalmist's poignant text on thehuman weakness of willful transgression. Cleanse thou me from secret faultsaEUR|. Let the words of my mouth, and themeditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer (KJV).I think the fact that I had a bad cold while writing this music added to its effectiveness, for I was feeling quite sorry formyself. The melody portrays my prayer rising ever higher, asking forgiveness for my sins. The plagal (Amen) cadenceat the end acknowledges God's gracious forgiveness.Difficulty level: College or advanced high school, requiring full control of intonation and long tones in all ranges.Performance Time: 3' 40

Henry Mancini wrote this unusual ‘jazz bassoon concerto’ in 1980 for Hollywood session musician Ray Pizzi (the so-called ‘godfather’ of modern jazz bassoon); he can be heard on the original ‘Star Wars’ (1977) soundtrack, also on ‘Predator 2’ (as the voice of the beast). This whirlwind piece takes us through the whole range of the instrument, starting with skittish jumping octaves, a free improvisation (book-ended by ‘shouts’ from the band), a very sultry slow section (featuring Mancini’s trademark chromatic harmony) a magnificent and dramatic final chorus, closing with an extended cadenza to further show off the instrument in this unusual disguise. This arrangement calls for a small beat quartet of keys, Fender bass and drums to accompany the solo bassoon; a suggested solo has been provided for the first section, but the final cadenza has been left blank for complete artistic creation. Despite the subtitle, this piece is not a samba, but rather a soulful solo vehicle for Grover and members of the rhythm section.This arrangement is written flexibly so that it could be performed by a full big band, by solo alto sax with rhythm section, or by big band with a featured alto soloist. The arrangement can be opened up for multiple soloists. Young soloists can improvise very effectively using a g minor blues scale, although the piece is not a blues.
