Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme.The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024. Duration: 17 to 20 minutes.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489523). Dimension Traveler, Op. 150, for brass quintet was completed 26 Mar 2024. When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.” Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed. With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77. The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G. Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F. Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142. Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée. There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions. Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism. Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre. Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba. Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets. However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.

The work begins with an electronic prelude, and moves to the instrumental portion at about 4:00.healing and vibration (sound). The concept of matter and form being integrally connected and influenced/formed by sound has been studied since ancient times, and myths from various world cultures mention gods or beings that could manifest form from matter through their voice. Recent work by Hans Jenny verifies the connection between sound and form (see Cymatics).Similarly, the power of music to affect response in individuals is a popular subject of ancient and modern writers. My interest in the work stems from observing how people react to my music, in which I believe certain thoughts and feelings are somehow encoded, transmitted and received during performance. My research stems from a desire to increase my own awareness of sound, its affect, and to connect this to my art. The integration of dance with the music creates a visual relationship that marries the sound and its intention.Elemental Spiral maps elemental associations (earth, water, fire, and air) to the musical context in a deliberate fashion. At this stage my associations are fairly literal, and various qualities (i.e. earth=slow, fire=energetic, air=fast frenetic) are mapped directly onto musical material. The associations become richer when one state changes to another or comes into being (water->air, becoming earth etc.) and when various qualities are mixed (air-pitch with earth rhythm etc.).The intended effect is an overall balancing of the musical structure with desirable or pleasing proportions (the age old compositional question). This balancing is well known to all of us, for instance-elementally-much of Beethoven’s music moves between water and fire elements (mapping of speed and pitch), and the tempos of symphonic movements fast-slow-med. fast-fast is an affirmation that a balance of tempi and musical content is found to be pleasing.I express my deepest gratitude to Donald Laney who choreographed the dance for this work. He was somehow able to convert my musings into movement and in the process far exceeded my expectations. This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions. Dido's Lament, from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas is a lyrical, somber piece, giving the younger player the chance to develop phrasing and legato playing. The emotional mood of this makes it perfect during reflective times of a service, especially during the Lenten season. The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level. The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance. There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well. Please give that young musician the chance to shine! Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.

Petros Shoujounian, Armenian/Canadian composer has written Twelve Duos for Tubas based on the folksong collection of the Armenian priest Komitas, known as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Below are comments from the composer about his inspiration in writing these Twelve Duos for Tubas. My interest in the collected works of Komitas's ethnographical songs was aroused when I was introduced to Bela Bartok's similar works followed by Alan Hovhaness's huge creative world. Bartok completed his project having at his disposal a large collection of ethnographic music, while Hovhannes studied the wealth of Komitas's music with great interest. It is difficult to say to what extent the Armenian underpinning of Hovhannes's works are nurtured by Komitas's musical world, but his classical interpretation of the Armenian ethnographical music created a huge interest in the listener. Needless to say, there is also Aram Katchaturian's legacy, which at its core has the ardent presence of the Armenian spirit, nurtured by Komitas's very existence. Komitas has left a collection of about 3,000 cleaned versions of ethnographic song and dance pieces, of which 1,700 has reaches us, about 400 of which have been activated. I believe that in those beautiful musical fragments reside the power to be revived, once we enrich them with colorful musical instruments and unbounded polyphonic imagination. This is the motivation behind my own work and these Twelve Duos for Tubas: to make the essence of our ethnographic music accessible through Komitas. These Twelve Duos are appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed on C Tuba, F Tuba and the larger B-flat Bass Tubas.
