Published by Michelle Kraak (A0.1012606). The Betrayal is written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). It is a religious piece based on the passion of Christ. It has aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to Lenten music in the church. Published by Michelle Kraak (A0.1012605). Intermediate trumpet solo with piano, three short movements (I. Thunder, II. Gentle Rain, III. The Tempest) I was inspired by the sounds of water for this piece. The accents and the swells played by the piano accompaniment in the first movement work to depict the crash of thunder during a storm. The second movement captures the sound of the calm after the storm. The accompaniment is gentler than in the first movement and lighter, reflective of a more gentle rain. In the final movement, the storm returns in full force. This movement also uses accents to highlight the chaos of the storm. It is highly dramatic, with an unrelenting pulse that propels the piece forward. It is a programmatic work about an axe murder that occurred in the small town of Sheboygan Falls, WI. The piece is eerie and leaves a sense of discomfort. This same sense of discomfort and unease oftentimes lingers after such a brutal crime. The piece should be sung in a pop-like style, as opposed to an operatic style. It could be programmed in a recital or ensemble concert. The piece has a unique instrumentation, which can be helpful for groupsthat don't have the standard instrumentations. Published by Michelle Kraak (A0.1012599). This is a set of three miniature intermediate trumpet duets focusing on developing specific skills on the trumpet. It could be used for a recital, in trumpet lessons or just as a practice tool with a friend. The three sisters are mythological creatures, with snakes for hair and gazes that turns one into stone. The overall character of these three miniature duets is nasty. This can help a young trumpeter practice accessing different emotions in their playing. Euryale is a study in trills. This sister, who was the second oldest, was vicious, with brass hands and fangs. She is especially noted for her bellowing cries, which is emulated in the obnoxious trills in the opening. Medusa was a beautiful maiden. Turning men to stone was defense mechanism for her, as the mythological story details she suffered at the hands of Poseidon. Of the three sisters, I thought Medusa was somewhat misunderstood. Her movement as a result is a little tamer, but still has a sense of unease. The movement is constructed as a round, which can help develop skills in timing and form. The final sister, Stheno, utilizes some more complex rhythmic figures. Stheno was arguably the most ferocious of the three sisters, having turned more men to stone than both of her sisters combined.
