The Sun Still Sets on the Mississippi River is a late intermediate level piano solo. The lazy style paints a musical picture of America's mighty river gently rolling along. But when you get to the key change, look out! That mighty river has an exciting rush toward the end, which calms back to that lazy style for the ending. This piece will bring back memories of simpler times, with music reminiscent of the early 1900's. Written in the key of F Major, this piece contains rich jazz chords, echos in the treble, a bridge that changes to 6/8, and a key change to Bb that uses octaves in the R.H. melody. The funk style has a lot of intricate syncopation, a minor blues tonality, some harsh dissonances, and a lot of repetition. All these elements are present in this movement. The last movement is called Pee Dee Revival. The Pee Dee River runs through North and South Carolina and the movement is inspired by spirituals.

Water becomes an image of the unsettled and uncertain nature of love. The journey of love is a journey of troubled water. There is no resolution.Undaunted by the elusive nature of love, the poet, heard via the chorus, turns flippant, displaying a persevering and humorous outlook in “Jump Right In!†(to the river) from Hughes’ poem Life is Fine. Romantic misadventures will not conquer the spirit. “I could’ve died for love, but for livin’ I was born.â€â€œIn time of silver rain,†once more using the poem of the same title, is a song of healing. With the regeneration of spring, the poet marvels at the wonder of life.Though intended to be performed as the complete multi-movement work I’ve Known Rivers, each song may be performed separately. As the rivers have endured over time, so has the human soul. The waters—the blood—runs deep.In contrast to the universal message of the first song, “Troubled Water,†which uses the poetry of the same title, is contemporary and personal. One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers. Old Trace Scherzo is a scherzo with a short dramatic intro. Beyond the intro the rest of the piece keeps the 2-pulse triple feel in 6/8 meter and is in the normal form of a scherzo. The Old Trace was a system of animal paths used by Native Americans. The north end was near Fort Nashborough, TN and the south end was the Mississippi River near Natchez , MS. In the late 18th century, it was overland route between Nashville and the Mississippi River. President Thomas Jefferson improved the Old Trace for use as a postal road. The Old Trace survives today as the Natchez Trace, a 440-mile natinal park from Pasquo, TN to Natchez , MS. Download includes parts for a medium to large band. Baritone TC is included.

One of the most beautiful and haunting of America’s native-to-the-soil melodies, Shenandoah dates probably from the early 19th century and continues to be performed and to enchant to this day. Said to be the product of voyageurs, fur trappers canoeing down the Missouri River, it has accumulated numerous sets of lyrics over the years. In perhaps the most familiar of these, a voyageur sings of his love for the daughter of the Oneida chief Shenandoah while paddling the river. Boatmen on their flatboats heard this melody and took it for their own, passing it along to sailors of Mississippi River vessels. It made its way down to the sea, where it became a popular sea shanty and was thus spread around the world.

Rounding out the “American Trails” with the fifth composition in the collection, “Trail of Tears” is in reference to the heart-wrenching dark history of over 60,000 American Indians being expelled from their lands. During the period between 1830 and 1850, natives from five tribes were forcibly displaced from their homelands in what later became known as the American Deep South. These “Five Civilized Tribes” included the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole nations. Under the leadership of President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830 which revoked all land ownership from all Native Americans in the Southeast. Although Jackson was not the originator of the movement to remove the Indians, it was his top legislative priority upon taking office. In his mind, they were a primary obstacle for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny and American national success. There were many opponents to the violent legislation, such as David Crockett of Tennessee and Catherine Beecher.The most brutal year of the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838 among the Cherokee who had resisted the Treaty of New Echota of 1836 through petitions and pleas to the US government. Despite their efforts, the expulsive treaty was ratified and the resistant Cherokee were compelled by militia to vacate all lands east of the Mississippi River. The heaviest death tolls occurred in the summer and winter months of 1838 after the deadline to depart had passed in May. Disease, exposure, starvation, and harassment by frontiersman compounded the physical exertion of the “death marches” that killed many.This composition extensively borrows the four-note motif from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. That symphony was composed in the early 1800s in Europe at the same time as the growth of the anti-Indian sentiment across the American frontier. Rather than primary thematic material, “Trail of Tears” uses the motif as a morose, plodding accompanimental pattern that adds depth of sorrow to the musical homage.

Squall at Kilkee Bay is a lively, advanced intermediate piano solo, with a Celtic flavor. This arrangement has several keychanges, and helpful fingering. It's a great show-piece for recitals or just for fun. The title refers to an historic event, the shipwreck of the Edmond, in 1850 in Kilkee Bay, Ireland. The Edmond was battered by a fierce storm and pushed into the Bay, crashing against the rocks. A man by the name of Richard Russel was occupying a house on the bay. He was trying to secure his rattling bedroom window, when he spotted the distressed ship. He call the coastguard and then went down to the ship to try to help people to safety. He and 3 coastguards, James McCarthy, Timothy Hannigan, and Patrick Shannon rescued 100 passengers, men, women and children. Many others were not as fortunate. The 3 coastguards received silver medals for their heroic efforts. It's quite a story!
