When an acquaintance of mine, Gay Tregaskis, sent me a poem she’d written and told me the story behind it, I was honored to be able to put her beautiful and touching words to music. The story is best told in her own words: When I was expecting my first baby, I wanted an antique rocking chair. I found one listed in the newspaper that said, ‘old, but loved.’ I remember going to look at it with my husband in November. It was old and worn… the seat springs were broken, the fabric was faded and torn. I loved it! We bought it for a forgotten amount and my sweet mother-in-law had it repaired and re-upholstered for my Christmas gift. Our little son was born on January 31st. I spent hours and hours just rocking God’s little miracle. On Mother’s Day that year, I woke up and just began writing. There were only one or two lines I shifted. It felt like all the babes and parents who ever sat in the old chair wanted me and mommies-to-be to understand the precious moments spent rocking and bonding. It still brings tears to my eyes. These words are a gift given to me for my children and all who they touch. Our moments to share pass on fleet feet… especially with our children. Images of Family is a collection of six pieces for solo piano inspired by the scenes from the passage through an individual's life and the different roles they play as members of a family. The first movement, Toddler, begins with a single repeated note to simulate the ticking of a clock. As any parent of a toddler knows, when things are that quiet, it's time to go find out what that toddler is up to. The second movement, Dandelion Bouquet, celebrates the precious, intimate moments spent with a young child, representing a small bouquet of dandelions carefully picked and presented to the child's mother. The third movement, Loading the Car, portrays the chaos of a larger family trying to leave on a family vacation. Fourth is Newlywed, a celebration of the optimism and beauty seen through a newly married couple's eyes. The fifth movement, Afternoon in Grandpa's Meadow, looks at life through the eyes of the more experienced generation. And finally, the sixth movement, Journey Home, portrays the final moments of life, the goodbyes to family members on this side of death's door, and the joyous reunion with other family members who have already passed on from this life and await eagerly on the other side. A more detailed description is included in the work's program notes.Difficulty: The difficulty varies from movement to movement. (Movements may be performed separately if desired.) Everyone thought he was insane but my grandmother did not think so since he always carried poetry writings and artworks with him wherever he went. My grandmother befriended him and during one of their conversations on the street he told her that he spent his life writing poems, drew portraits of the women he loved, and acknowledges that “life is nothing but a dream”. One day this homeless man disappeared and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that he was rumoured to have passed away one rainy night inside an abandoned house which was his childhood home. This piece intends to describe that man’s thoughts and feelings during his final moments: his lifetime memories, his final acceptance, and true inner peace before saying goodbye to this world.

He wrote his setting of Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), derived from Goethe's Faust, when he was 17 years old. Originally for voice and piano, Gretchen provides a first-person account of the feelings of its titular character as she works at her spinning wheel while reflecting on her conflicted emotions regarding Faust. The constant motion in the accompaniment part, echoing the tireless spinning of the wheel and the regular fall of her foot on the pedal, churns over a swiftly changing series of harmonies, representing both how swept away she is by her feelings for Faust but also her pain of not being able to be with him. The wheel's only pause comes when Gretchen reflects on Faust's kiss; it is the only moment in the song where she completely forgets her task at hand, so wrapped up is she in her tumultuous thoughts. As the musical patterns of the spinning wheel slowly but insistently return, Gretchen's composure is regained, and she returns to her task. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the spinning wheel pattern across all four parts, and Gretchen's lyrical melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

His Die Forelle (The Trout), based on a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, tells the story of a clever and happy fish that is eventually caught by a duplicitous fisherman who muddies the water in order to trick the fish into being snared on his line. Schubert's playful accompanimental figures, originally set in the piano part, have long been interpreted as either the babbling of the brook or the gleeful swimming and leaping of the fish, and the sung melody has the natural strophic cadence of a folk song. It is only in the moment where the fisherman agitates the water and our protagonist fish is nearing his doom that we hear the harmony become darker and more complex; otherwise the material is bright, sunny, and full of playful chromaticism. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the accompanimental motive across all four parts, and the original sung melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies. After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition. This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program. To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions! It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting. It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine. There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument. Suite for Brass Quintet by American composer Thomas Joseph is a three movement work loosely inspired by both Holst's First Suite for Military Band and Robert Jager's Third Suite. The first movement, Alla Marcia is a bombastic march with a folk-like vibe. Boisterous gestures are juxtaposed with moments of agility. Even the tuba is featured in the fray. The Adagio introduces an expressive theme emanating from the tuba. This theme becomes the cohesive framework of the movement and is passed around nearly throughout. The atmosphere around it changes drastically as the opening moves from a sweet cantabile to bright, frenzied and celebratory. Lastly, the movement retreats to a reverent quality. The finale Allegro con Spirito is quite frivolous being comprised mostly of humorous gestures and rhythmic focus. This 7-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.
