Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533545). This was the first piece composed for the saxophone by ANDERSEN VIANA. The piece uses two contrasting sections: one related to violence and psychological instability in the big cities, and other; related to the nostalgic moods found in Rio de Janeiro in the past. It was composed specially for a friend, saxophonist and Doctor Mecenas MAGNO. Monologue for a friend is a rhapsodic and brilliant piece of great effect, also using rhythms and reminiscences of the music called Choros and Samba so popular in the Rio de Janeiro city at the 40’ths and 50'ths. It uses also free structures and little allusions to minimalism of Riley and Reich. The work is divided in six sections: Tormentà to, Scherzando, Lento, Lentissimo, reexposition (Tormentà to) and Coda. Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, he has a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the Federal University of Bahia. He began composing at the age of thirteen and became a professor at the age of nineteen. He has studied in courses and seminars about music and film in several official institutions with Ennio Morricone, Ettore Scolla, Giussepe Tornatore, E. Polizzi, Radamés Gnatalli, Max Rostal, Oilliam Lanna, S. Vianna (Accademia Chigiana di Siena, Reale Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Arts Academy of Rome, Royal University College of Music Stockholm, UFMG, UFBA), among others. He currently works as a composer-conductor and cultural producer, as well as a professor at the Clóvis Salgado Foundation, Palácio das Artes, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in addition to offering lectures and workshops in various institutions both in Brazil and abroad. His first teacher wa his father, Sebastião Vianna (assistant and reviser for the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos), and most recently furthered his studies in other institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden. He has also published over forty articles both in Brazil and Europe. Viana has received 25 awards in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the USA, including the Prix de Composition at the First Composition Competition Festin Choral 2013 in the city of Billère (France), first prize at the Susanville Symphony Composition Competition 2012 (USA), first prize in the international composition contest of Lys Music Orchestra 2001 in Belgium, first prize and the audience prize in the Lambersart 2006 International Contest of Composition in France. To date, he has composed 315 musical pieces for voices, chamber, symphonic as well as electronic instruments. Viana has also composed film scores for the following films: A Cartomante, Retalhos do Taquaril, Bem Próximo do Mal (Next Evil), Jogando para o Amanhã, O Próximo Passo, Gun’s Speech, Trem Fantasma, 3:00:AM, Corações Ardentes, Filhos de Adão, Perdidos em Abbey Road, Vivalma, Manuelzão e Bananeira, Ofélia, Opostos, Minas Portuguesa, O Homem da Cabeça de Papelão, Convict, Ser Humano (Human Being), Um Dia Qualquer, Nego, Reenactment, Desafios and Oswaldo França Júnior.

The music of Monologues represents three kinds of social conversations.I. Desultory - A desultory monologue is marked by a disconnected jumping or passing from one thing to another, especially things not connected with the main subject. A twelve-tone row seems to lend itself naturally to this kind of disconnected expression.II. Epigrammatic - The term might be applied to monologues in which the speaker uses few words to make important observations or statements. The clarinet’s motives seem to be interrupted by figures in the piano which are the result of the completion of the twelve-tone rows begun by the clarinet.III. Philippic - It is nearly impossible to be a part of social conversation that does not lead at some point to verbal harangues against individuals, entities, or ideologies in politics. Demosthenes titled each of his orations against King Philip of Macedon a Philippic, as did Cicero his speeches against Mark Antony, and thus began a time-honored tradition. The music of this movement includes frequent changes of both regular and irregular meters and repetitions of musical motives and figures. Rondo form enhances the representation of a speaker driving home one principal subject.

The orchestral parts of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale.The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's.The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. This vital, Dionysian frenzy (in strong contrast to the Apollonian, severe contemplation in the first movement) leads only to its exhaustion and to the disorientated, slow Trio: first, an almost atonal tenor monologue accompanied by harp (on verses from Dante's Purgatory), then a quotation from Beethoven's sketches for a planned overture on the B-A-C-H motif, followed by a fugal section on the same archetypal motif and again a tenor monologue (on verses from Eminescu's Satire No. 4), this time with organ accompaniment and more and more tortured until the choral exclamations and the final cymbal clash. The search seemed in vain, so the rhythmic fury of the scherzo returns, but in mirror, as minor modes replaced the major ones on the same material.The Finale (Larghetto-Allegro-Larghetto) was inspired by the last scene in Goethe's Faust, part 2. After a cryptic variation for choir a cappella, the full theme appears at last in the orchestra, setting a lyric, appeased mood and more diatonic harmonies, while it reconciles the introspection of the first movement and the emotional and vital aspects of the second, although occasional attempts are made to escape, striving more and more towards the ending (with four vocal soloists and chorus). The parenthetic structure of the finale is a holographic reflection of the general form of the whole symphony, alternating gentle, contemplative episodes with exuberant or majestic fugatos. Towards the ending, ecstatic, big, complex quartal chords suggest the limits of perception and language (on the final stanzas from Dante's Paradise), until the sonority becomes again more and more rarefied and the journey returns to its starting point from the first movement: the 'tuning' A's in the violins.Total duration: 54 min. His colleagues throw his body into the river which runs through the town and carries the body to the sea. He floats back to his home country – this last journey is the theme of the monologue.

Dedicated to the luminary Steve Cowan, ?empty mind, open heart? is a four-movement suite that centers around the intervals of a fifth and a tritone. Each movement is inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. The opening movement is a meditation. The aleatoric rhythms and pacing of the notes are guided by the breathing of the performer, according to specific instructions in the score. Out of that atmosphere emerges a fluid, serene series of arpeggios in irregular rhythms in the second movement. Each new chord changes only one or two notes at a time in a gradual evolution over time. The third movement is a study in rhythm, sometimes dizzying. And the piece ends with a heartfelt, mostly quiet soliloquy.Dédiée à la sommité Steve Cowan, ? esprit vide, c?ur ouvert? est une suite en quatre mouvements centrée sur les intervalles d'une quinte et d'un triton. Chaque mouvement est inspiré d'une citation du Tao Te Ching de Lao Tseu. Le mouvement d?ouverture est une méditation. Les rythmes aléatoires et le rythme des notes sont guidés par la respiration de l'interprète, selon des instructions spécifiques de la partition. The main theme is a connected line ascending through the most lyrical range of the instrument; in between theme statements are quasi-polyphonic lines which use the full range of the tuba to create the illusion of bass, harmony, and melody. The singsong nature of the theme invites rubato interpretation, and expressive annotations throughout the score encourage this further. A majestic theme appears briefly towards the end of the work, which the player should clearly convey as a brilliant and triumphal outcry. The final statement is a long series of delicate, uninterrupted arrpegios decrescendoing to ppp, and is best circular-breathed. This piece demands a high technical level and is for the advanced player seeking to expand their musicality.
