Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021848). Franz von Suppé was a typical child of the multiethic Austrian-Hungarian monarchy with Italian, Dalmatian and Viennese ancestors. His full name was Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppè. He is regarded as father of the Viennese operetta. As he very often composed on bad quality librettos, most of his operettas nowadays are no more performed on stage. But many of his overtures and melodies are still popular, like this overture to the operetta Ein Morgen, ein Mittag, ein Abend in Wien (Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna), which was first performed in Vienna in February 1844. The original cello solo starting at bar 14was transcribed in this arrangement to the bass clarinet, as it is the only wind instrument in this score covering the range of the cello's solo part. There are also alternatives for clarinet (as in the orchestral score) or flugelhorn combined with euphonium. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria. And, it has a melodic as well as implied harmonic language that is a fusion of Classical and Jazz of the 20th and 21st centuries. The work tells a definitive tale, despite being in a strict form. It answers the question of what dreamland would sound like for a person when infected with nightmares. Be prepared to toss and turn, as we enter the human mind after it has had a long and hard morning, afternoon, and evening.

October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano. I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire. The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire. These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared. In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds. In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later. The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that. In the region of the Latin American Andes, more precisely the tableau called ayacuchano is an art form very representative of the folklore of the region. Taking this idea of micro-stories, the work narrates four scenes of a day that begins at dawn and ends with the town's festival. Each story corresponds to the four sections of the music, which are performed successively. First tableau: Autumn morning lights. The change of season is perceived in the ashen morning lights of the autumn season, the sun rises lightly with a slight warmth, giving the ochre color that dominates the landscape a sense of tranquility and reflectiveness. The mood of this piece is one of contemplation. Second tableau: Noon in the town The tableau opens. It is midday. The whole town is busy with preparations for the harvest festival celebration. The music goes by with the sounds of the town and the joy of the inhabitants for the important festivity they are about to share as a community. The whole town is a great hustle and bustle. You hear barrel organs, feel the excitement of hanging banners and decorating the houses for the main parade. Third tableau. Little song for siesta time. A nostalgic voice sings an old folk song to lull the children to sleep. The voices of other adults of the town intertwine to sing a song to the sleeping children. It is a tender song that recovers the stillness and tranquility of the town at the hour when everyone returns to their homes to rest. Fourth tableau: Night of celebration. Harvest Festival The first chords of the town band can be heard in the distance, a melody invites to enter with enthusiasm to the place where the festival will take place. The dance begins, the band plays energetically and everyone participates in a dance of joy. In the most important moment of the party, the town's hymn is played, everyone joins in one voice to sing the song that distinguishes them. And now: the announcement of the winners of the harvest contest. Someone is honored and everyone applauds vigorously. Then the dancing continues again. Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. This is my first original album, a soft piano album about the day of the week ‘Sunday’. Initially, I didn’t set out to write a full album, the piece ‘Sunrise’ ignited that idea after I wrote it. After writing that piece I decided to write more tracks and compile an album. I decided to write a total of 10 tracks, each reflecting on a different time during Sunday. The album begins with the sunrise which is the first track. You’ll notice that the whole album is in order from the beginning to the end of the day. After the sunrise it is morning and the frost begins to melt from the suns warmth in the air. Moving toward midday some light rain passes through followed by a thunderstorm then comes the afternoon, and the warm air. Finally, the day comes to an end as the sun sets on the horizon and then the stars revel themselves in the night sky.This album is meant to be a relaxing, peaceful album to listen to while you read, study, work, drive, or anything else you might do with music on in the background. I really enjoyed writing each track and it was a lot of fun to write a different piece about each part of Sunday. I hope that you enjoy listening to or learning these pieces and that they bring a little more peacefulness into your life.

Music While You Work was a daytime radio programme of continuous live popular music broadcast in the United Kingdom twice daily on workdays from 23 June 1940 ]until 29 September 1967 by the BBC. Initially, the morning edition was generally broadcast on the BBC Home Service at 10:30am, with the afternoon edition at 3pm on the Forces/General Forces Programme - and after the war on the BBC Light Programme. Between August 1942 and July 1945, a third edition was broadcast at 10:30pm for night-shift workers.The programme began in World War II with the idea that playing non-stop popular/light music at an even tempo would help factory workers become more productive.[4][5] It originally consisted of live music (light orchestras, dance bands, brass and military bands and small instrumental ensembles).
