Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

The second movement …and the Sky is the Limit written in an ABA cyclic form is full of rhythmic gestures starting with the combination of 7/8, 2/4, 5/8 and 3/4 in the first four measures that leads to a slow movement as an attempt to sing a Greek song in those vast territories and to portray the thankfulness of being there and experience the presence of the amazing beauty of it. When asked why he commissioned this piece, Holzman replied, My wife and I spend our summers in Stowe. We love being there, celebrate the summer and spend time outside. We have family and friends who come and share a few days with us and Apostolos is a dear friend who has been coming for several years. We talked about the possibility of him writing a piece that reflected Stowe and the mountains. When asked about the piece, Paraskevas responded, I always write music for the person behind the instrument, so while composing every note of this piece I had Adam in my mind; the way he plays, the way he breathes the way he lives his life. Mist-Covered Mountains is a very accessible SATB choral arrangement of the gorgeous 19th century Gaelic song Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna (usually translated as The Mist-Covered Mountains of Home). The original song was written in 1856 by John Cameron, and since then has entered the folk tradition. It was made famous by The Rankin Family in the 1970s, and many other folk artists have covered it. This arrangement was written for Belsize Community Choir in London, and is well-suited to community choirs. The refrain is in the original Gaelic, but the verses are in English.The Gaelic refrain is easily learned and a pronunciation guide is included. The tune passes among different voice parts, and is sometimes sung in unison. The (optional) piano gives solidity and depth – like the mountains themselves. There is also a part for soprano recorder. If performing the song a cappella, start at bar 7, end at bar 86, and leave out the third beat of bars 38, 54, 70 and 78.

As the fog burns away, the majesty of the mountain range is revealed.This is a great contrasting piece to program for the middle of your recital. You'll explore both the sweet and heroic sounds of the horn - make sure you save enough to keep building to the apex of the piece at 78. Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, Snowy Mountains, is set in the alpine region of Australia, in Thredbo in the state of NSW, which is a popular ski resort. The scene opens with the majesty and austerity of the alpine mountains. Then, the cold sets the teeth chattering and the feet stamping with a paraphrase from Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons but which transforms into the iconic Australian song, Waltzing Matilda. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!
