A tip of the hat to Stravinsky's Three Pieces,  this and my String Trio (also 2001) I see now as my last 20th Century composition.  Not only was the 20th century over, but these two were the last to fit the 20th century, avant-garde ethos.  By 2003, I'd already begun to move away from most of the Western European Art Music tradition.1. Dance2. Verset3. RantMusic for Solo Clarinet was written in the fall of 2001. These were spontaneous, uncommissioned, un-requested works that seemed to come from nowhere. But looking back, I see that they encapsulate a lot of what I was feeling (what everyone was feeling) in the fall of 2001: confusion, sadness, anger, disappointment... Each movement features one of the three primary ‘colors’ produced by the three different registers of the clarinet, and each is a sonata-allegro form, where tiny gestural figures are used as themes.

(Psalm 13) was the first composition to come out of that challenge and my first notated instrumental piece. Out of the Depths (Psalm 130) was the second. (I still have yet to compose the third one.)I've written and discarded more pieces than I can count, but this  simple little piece has stuck with me.  I can see sparks in it of works that were to come later.  Simple and naive as it is, it still sounds like my own voice.

For James: a kind of lullaby (1993)Built in 1898 the James Monaghan Mansion--now, and since 1942 the home of Gonzaga University's music department--was for many years believed to be haunted. In addition to reports of disembodied footsteps, doors dramatically opening themselves, and sudden appearances of hostile presences, there was also reports of the organ playing itself......which is where I, primarily an organ student at the time, spent a majority of my time. This piece was written entirely at the organ, on that organ while an organ and piano student at Gonzaga. Written in four layers as if for organ, in the end I found that it sounded much better on the piano. It has never been performed or recorded on organ.The working title was Excorsising Monaghan. Â The finished piece sounded less ghostly and more like a lullaby. Whether or not it was James doing the haunting, I thought it best to offer the lullaby to him.--Bill Whitley, 2023.

Ovviamente all’inizio ho dovuto leggere e riflettere molto sui versi di Dante e cercare nella mia memoria e nella mia anima le sensazioni che i versi producevano in me. Una volta iniziato il lavoro compositivo ho cercato per quanto pensabile che tutto fosse il più spontaneo possibile. Non è stato facile ma posso dire di avere ottenuto quello che cercavo.Queste composizioni appartengono, come d’altronde tutte le composizioni degli ultimi anni, al mio nuovo modo di concepire la composizione e cioè non solo note organizzate secondo logica, ma suoni distribuiti in uno spazio dove il tempo sembra infinito. Un suono che si antepone alla tecnica per curare l’anima. In questo ciclo le composizioni sono racconti musicali, ma allo stesso tempo una sorta di mappa emozionale con la quale coordinare i nostri pensieri.

Nel comporre la musica ho tenuto conto della suddivisione data da Dante alla Cantica, pertanto è presente l’Antipurgatorio, il Purgatorio con le sette cornici ed il Paradiso terrestre. Rispetto alla prima Cantica, il Purgatorio presenta un'atmosfera decisamente meno cupa, più rilassata e serena che si manifesta fin dal primo Canto, all'arrivo di Dante e Virgilio sulla spiaggia nei minuti che precedono l'alba, la mattina della domenica di Pasqua. Se nel comporre la musica dell'Inferno lo stile era spesso aspro e duro, adeguato alla rappresentazione del regno del dolore, quello della seconda Cantica è di tono più leggero ed elegiaco, ovviamente questa leggerezza non è sinonimo di facilità di linguaggio o di esecuzione. Nella terza, quarta, quinta e sesta cornice ho usato gli stessi temi dell’Inferno riferiti alle omologhe pene, ma rielaborandoli con armonie e strutture diverse rendendoli meno scuri e più rasserenanti. Mentre per le restanti parti lo sviluppo tematico è stato concepito completamente con idee nuove. Unica eccezione riguarda l’ultimo brano, il Paradiso terrestre, dove oltre al tema concepito, verso la conclusione del brano e precisamente nelle ultime cinque battute, ho introdotto il tema di un noto corale protestante utilizzato anche dalla chiesa latina dal titolo: “Noi canteremo Gloria a Teâ€. Nella partitura ho indicato anche la scelta dei registri e la dinamica la quale indicazione o suggerimento non risulta vincolante. Pertanto ciò non vieta che l’esecutore attraverso il suo buon gusto possa apportare delle modifiche nella scelta dei registri in considerazione anche dell’organo dove andrà ad eseguire la composizione. La gestazione dell’intera Cantica è durata all’incirca 7 mesi. Le prime battute le ho scritte il 13 marzo del 2022 mentre la fine della composizione ha visto la luce il 22 novembre dello stesso anno. Il Purgatorio chiude il ciclo compositivo organistico dedicato alla Divina Commedia dantesca, iniziato nel 2020 con il Paradiso per poi proseguire nel 2021 con la stesura dell’Inferno. Tre anni di intenso lavoro cercando di poter far “parlare†i brani all’ascoltatore in maniera diretta, curandone il suono che anteponendosi alla tecnica alimentano l’anima. Si tratta di musica autenticamente semplice, ma non banale, in quanto penso che la comunicazione diretta con l’ascoltatore si ottiene solo con la semplicità che è molto più “spinosa†del tecnicamente difficile e veloce. Ma soprattutto, in questa semplicità “spinosa†io ci metto il cuore e la mia mente.

C'è un'introduzione musicale, con poco testo e poi si passa al tema principale, in cui il basso da' ritmo alla melodia principale. Poco dopo, con una variazione ispirata ai Queen di Bohemian Rapsody si modula in tonalità vicina, per sottolineare il cantato dei fratelli della triste protagonista e subito dopo il tema si addolcisce per lasciare spazio alla madre triste che preannuncia la tragedia. Tragedia che si canta subito dopo in minore per poi tornare sulla melodia principale fino al finale, dove dopo una frase corale si torna al ritmo e al tema principale.English--------The original version of this emigrant song is quite simple: same melody repeats throughout the song. More, the existing vocal arrangements I've heard are quite steady and not so rhythmic.So I tried to add some movement: there is a musical introduction with little lyrics and then we move on to the main theme, where the bass gives rhythm to the main melody.Shortly after, with a Queen-inspired variation coming from Bohemian Rhapsody the score modulates in a close key, to underline the singing of the brothers of the song's sad heroin and immediately after the theme softens to leave room to the sad mother heralding the coming tragedy.A tragedy that is sung immediately afterwards, in minor, and then returns to the main melody until the finale, where after a choral phrase we return to the main theme.

Son sous-titre est trompeur car elle n’est pas aussi facile que l’on pourrait croire. En effet, la maîtrise pianistique et la science de Mozart échouent à révéler la réelle difficulté de cette sonate. Sa création date du 26 juin 1788, peu d’années avant la disparition du compositeur. La finalité de cette création serait mi-pédagogique, mi-commerciale d’où l’objet de son surnom. Cette pièce a trois mouvements : Allegro, Andante et Rondo-allegretto. Elle débute par un allegro sur un tempo assez allant avec une basse appelée basse d’Alberti en rythme de croche, se déployant tout au long du mouvement. La structure du premier mouvement est une forme sonate. La mélodie comporte deux sujets sur la tonique et à la réexposition se présente le thème sur la sous-dominante. La basse dAlberti exposée dans ce premier mouvement est développée d’une manière assez étendue en fluidité dans le deuxième mouvement, l’andante. Seul l’allegro est représenté dans cette partition, ce premier mouvement, très connu, ensorcelle de nombreux pianistes de tous niveaux grâce à la relative aisance de son interprétation et à l’enchantement et à la frivolité qui s’en dégage. Drunken Sailor (letteralmente: Marinaio ubriaco) è un canto marinaresco, conosciuto anche come What Shall We Do with a/the Drunken Sailor? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un/il marinaio ubriaco?).Questo canto di lavoro nacque per accompagnare certi lavori a bordo di velieri, specialmente quelli che richiedevano un passo svelto e vivace. Si pensa che il canto risalga ai primi del XIX secolo o anche prima, in un periodo nel quale le ciurme delle barche, specialmente quelle dei vascelli militari, erano sufficientemente numerose da poter tirare una corda semplicemente marciando lungo il ponte. Con l'avvento delle navi postali e i clipper e le loro ciurme ridotte, che richiedevano differenti metodi di lavoro, l'uso di questo canto è progressivamente scemato o è passato all'accompagnamento di lavori meno faticosi.Drunken Sailor è poi divenuta una canzone popolare fra i non-marinai nel XX secolo, fino a essere considerata uno dei canti marinareschi più conosciuti dal pubblico. Numerosi artisti ne hanno proposto la loro versione in registrazioni e/o esibizioni e i media hanno contribuito alla sua popolarità . Anche se non esiste una versione univoca del testo, esso contiene costantemente la domanda What shall we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un marinaio ubriaco, la mattina presto?). In alcune versioni, i versi successivi suggeriscono metodi per alleviare la sbornia o punire il marinaio ubriaco. Altre versioni, invece, prevedono il susseguirsi di ulteriori domande e risposte relative ad altri personaggi.
