And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year. This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations. “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another. I will not fail!I’m a guardian of the tradition of honor!Fly, fight, and win!When I hold my little boy,And think of freedoms he’ll enjoy,I ponder his destiny.Yes, it’s hard when I deploy!But distance cannot destroyWhat I love; what I fight so very hard to save!Generations come and go.I wish they all could knowHow it feels to serve America.The piece was difficult for the singers, but they practiced hard, and the USAF Heartland of America Band premiered it during an Independence Day concert tour in June and July 2022, including the grand patriotic concert at Mount Rushmore.A casual comment from one of the singers lingered: “You write for singers like they’re horns!” It is true that most of my compositional experience is with brass instruments. This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition. It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global. Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Fosterâ€, “Homage to Pittsburghâ€, or “The Belle of Pittsburghâ€.It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. A quite difficult one to arrange!This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. A note from the composer: I wrote Farewell Dream Garden for the International Music in the Garden Composers’ Competition Wroclaw - Kraków 2010/2011. The competition was sponsored by the Botanical Gardens of Wroclaw to commemorate the 200th anniversary of their founding. The guidelines of the competition suggested a musical portrayal of times of day in the garden and I chose to depict nighttime, or more specifically, dreaming. My idea of a night garden is deeply lyrical, emotional, and colorful. Broadly arching phrases of the soprano vocalise, ebbs and flows of the string orchestra, and intricate flute textures all compound to make Farewell one of my most romantic and spectacular compositions to date. Gnome`s Dream was designed to be performed by a group of five artists, or even seven, nine, one thousand or more! Any kind of diatonic Harp can be used to perform this piece. When playing the harp with the rest of the ensemble it might be better to perform it mostly as it was written. In the absence of a Double bass, than should the cello take its part. In the case of an ensemble with more artists where we have already formed a bowed stringed orquestra, The double bass while playing the introduction of the piece remains a soloist and it will than be reenforced with a cello while the other bowed instruments are also playing. It would be good to tune the E string of the double bass down to a D but if this is not possible than simply play the lower „D notes one octave higher. It is a perfect piece for a mixed group of early beginners and „early soloists, it is very easy to perform. It can be played by a group of five artists, as well as a complete string orquestra with harp. Some interpretation symbols where used in the score as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left virgin to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of bowing and fingering. It is a very flexible piece that can be used in all kinds of events. The score For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entrywas written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was produced with samplers from Garritan, conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMS1612). 9 x 12 in inches.Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair is one of the most enduring, and popular American songs of all times.Characterized as a parlor song, it was written by Stephen Foster, and published by Firth, Pond & Co. of NewYork, in1854.In 1850, Foster married Jane Denny McDowell, whose nickname was Jennie. However, this was an unhappymarriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written asperhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royaltieson the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights toJeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to hiswife and daughter.It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adaptedthis song to different genres. Among solo instrumentalists, Jascha Heifitz, and William Primrose have arranged itfor solo violin and viola. The big bands of Gene Krupa, and Glen Miller have recorded it. The great R & B artist,Sam Cooke used it, as well as opera stars, Marilyn Horne and John McCormick, who added it to their concertrepertoire.The song's frequent airplay in the 1940's, led Spike Jones to create a parody, called, I Dream of Jeanie with theLight Blue Jeans. Les Brown in 1941, created a big band song, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio with the line.....We Dream ofJoey With the Light Brown Bat. Even Bugs Bunny got into the act. The 1960 short, From Hare To Heir, featuresBugs singing, I dream of Jeanie, she's a light brown hareMy arrangement, for woodwind quintet is written to capture a lyric, singing style, which I think Foster had in mind.
