The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. It was introduced by Shorty Long, Alan Gilbert, John Henson, and Roy Lazarus in the Broadway musical, The Most Happy Fella. A recording of it by the Four Lads (made March 1, 1956) was popular in 1956. It first reached the Billboard charts on April 28, 1956, and peaked at No. 3 on each of the various charts at the time: the Disk Jockey chart, the Best Seller chart, the Juke Box chart, as well as the composite chart of the top 100 songs. The flip side was My Little Angel. Jimmy Arnold, lead tenor for The Four Lads in 1956, is sometimes erroneously listed as the song's co-author.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020

Ole Buttermilk Sky was primarily written as a cowboy song to set the scene where the character meets his lover.[3] The song also used jazz music for the lyric can't you see my little donkey and me. It was recorded in the December 14 issue of The Billboard that Ole Buttermilk Sky by Kay Kyser was at #1 .A version by Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers was at #8. Paul Weston and his Orchestra with Matt Dennis had their version at #9. For the week ending December 14, 1946, in the Most Played Juke Box Records chart, it showed that the song was getting many plays and there were five versions getting attention. Kay Kyser's version on Columbia 37073 had been on the chart was at #2. Hoagy Carmichaels version was at #5. Paul Weston and his Orchestra with Matt Dennis were at #9. Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers were at #15. And a version by Connee Boswell was coming up.[6].

Instrumentation: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 horns in F, 2 bassoons Program note.Nancy Braithwaite, for whom I have written many works - all of them featuring her instrument the clarinet - told me that she was a member of a wind group based on Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat Major, opus 7, for thirteen instruments: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, four horns, two bassoons, and contrabassoon. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music. Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. Nancy Braithwaite, for whom I have written many works - all of them featuring her instrument the clarinet - told me that she was a member of a wind group based on Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat Major, opus 7, for thirteen instruments: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, four horns, two bassoons, and contrabassoon. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music.Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. So, instead of a serenade for ten instruments, my work for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, is called La Serenissima as an homage to Antonio Vivaldi and that glorious city of Venice. Between performing sets of Christmas carols at a mall on the outskirts of Tokyo, I purchased a stunning 1000-piece puzzle of Mount Fuji as a Christmas gift for my wife. She is fond of puzzles. When I started putting together time lapse videos with brass quintet music, the fast-motion working of a puzzle sounded intriguing. We had just completed a different 1000-piece puzzle, so I estimated that the completed video would be less than a minute. The camera and table were set up for the filming, and then I opened the box. The tiny quarter-inch puzzle pieces shocked me! I even let out a gasp. However, everything was set up, and I was determined to get the time lapse footage. The process took a great portion of three days. Were it not for the end goal of a time lapse video, I think we would have abandoned the cursed puzzle long before completion. We got it done on 2 Jan 2024 though, and several days later I revived a cute little ricky-ticky piece in the works, gave it a title, and completed it in two days. One key moment is a musical laugh, as if the menacingly challenging puzzle were mocking us as we struggled so long to complete it. Duration: 3:00.

The Cindy lyrics were adapted to the tune during the 20th century and have been recorded by numerous individuals and groups. Probably the most familiar of its many versions describes a girl, tells her to go home and promises future matrimony: You ought to see my Cindy She lives way down South And she's so sweet the honey bees All swarm around her mouth. Get along home Cindy, Cindy Get along home Cindy, Cindy Get along home Cindy, Cindy I'll marry you some day. This arrangement for brass quintet is written in cut time with a suggested tempo of about 96 BPM. It opens in G major and, after a 12-measure introduction, introduces the basic melody using mainly Trumpets and Trombone. This is followed by five variations. The first takes form of a gentle, rhythmically soothing near-hymn played by the Horn; the second, sounds like Turkey in the Straw and features Horn and Trumpet 2; the third is a concoction based on The Little Brown Mouse and The Girl I Left Behind played by Tuba; the fourth is Boil Em Cabbage Down by Horn and Trombone; and the fifth is Kingdom Coming by Trumpets 2 and 1. At this point, the key changes to A major, Trumpets play an extended version of the Cindy melody and Horn provides a gigue-like counterpoint. All join in for the finale. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1351942). “I’ll Walk Alone†is a World War II era ballad whose poignant melody sounds as though it could have been written just yesterday.  First introduced in the 1944 movie Follow the Boys, it was hugely popular and has since been recorded by numerous artists.   Universal Pictures produced Follow the Boys in an effort to help boost morale for both overseas military and folks on the home front.  Despite being filled with stars and songs, critics tended to dismiss it as hokey and trite.  The exception was a scene in which Dinah Shore sang “I’ll Walk Alone.† Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, Ms. Shore’s follow-up Victor recording spent 20 weeks on the top ten Best Selling Records chart.  The song was used yet again in 1952 for another motion picture, With a Song in My Heart, the Jane Froman biographical film, and the melody eventually developed as a standard, particularly in the world of jazz.   Sammy Cahn’s lyrics for this song express the feelings and the promise of a woman who has been separated from her lover by the war.  She pledges that she will be true, that she will wait for him, and that “'till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone.† Jule Styne’s melody is both plaintiff and simple. an eight-measure phrase, a repeat of the phrase, an eight-measure second phrase, then another repeat of the first phrase.   For this arrangement, the suggested tempo is a relatively slow, blues-like 72 bpm.  It features a tenor saxophone as lead and solo instrument accompanied by brass quintet.  A four-measure introduction opens the piece with Trumpet 1 playing melody and the other four brass providing background.  Following the intro, Tenor Sax plays its first three notes alone; the other instruments begin their accompaniment on measure 6.  Trumpet 1 is tacit during measures 6-11 but begins adding counterpoint in measure 12.     In performing this arrangement, brass instruments should ensure that, when the Sax plays, their volume as a group is under (i.e., softer than) the melody.  The exception begins at measure 36, when a crescendo leads to the quintet playing fortissimo.  During this section, the Tenor Sax plays a couple of responses.  At measures 43 a decrescendo lowers the brass volume back to its original soft accompaniment level.  The piece ends with brass recapping the introduction and Sax providing a final statement.   This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 57 measures, a little over three minutes in length.  Written in the key of G major, Tuba’s lowest note is a G below the staff.  Other than that, all notes are well within the normal playing range of each instrument.   The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

That was what I’ve been asking myself for years when I read the text Stabat Mater. This composition tells about this experience and this questions. Sometimes a motif tells quite literally about this story, like the moment when Jesus is nailed down the cross: first the right hand, then the left hand and finaly with one nail both feet. In the first part of the composition, the viola tells with sforzato accents about this.This Stabat Mater is not only an expression of the pain of the Virgin Mother, but is also a tribute to JS Bach as well. Bach is by some seen as a fith evangelist. Nowadays there are still a lot of people who are affected by how his music tells about biblical stories, like I am. In this Stabat Mater I use the number 5 to express that: the first part is written in 5/4th and the last part Quando corpus et Amen is written with 5 parts in the choir. There can also be found a reworked choral in the choir passages of  O quam tristis et afflicta. It is the choral Wie nahe mir mein Ende from BWV 166.Polyfony is a returning presence in this Stabat Mater. I had an visual idea about this. When I was young I saw in an exhibition a tapestry with all kinds of colours and threads, and everything felt in motion. It was a kind of organized mess, but it was beautiful and felt perfect. I wondered if I could manage to express this idea in music as well. Under one of the polyphonic passages there is a Latin-American dance rhythm to express that motion. I heard that rhythm in my childhood in a rhythmbox of the keyboard of my dad. Another passage has the baroque sarabande-rhythme underneath in the double bass.A lullaby-feeling in some parts of the Stabat Mater tells about another story that got intertwined with this composition. It’s the story of a mother who rocks her terminal dying little son in her arms. I once read that story and it felt connected with the Stabat Mater text for a long time. I decided to express that as well.This composition is dedicated to the Dutch conductor Geert van den Dungen. However I saw many conductors, while playing the oboe and clarinet from a young age, there was nobody who let me think very deeply about music. Geert was the one who changed that for me. I started to study scores and developed a great interest in music analysis and music psychology. Many moments of inspiration and understanding for this Stabat Mater happened on choir rehearsals and concerts where Geert was working.
