Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This first piece, Bush Trek, is about a bush walk (hike) in the Australian bush in the Myall Lakes National Park in the state of NSW. The hike takes the trekkers higher and higher until a vast and wonderful vista is encountered. From there, the trekkers return the way they came.

The Twelve Pieces for Two Cellos, containing National Songs & Fugues, Op. 156 by J. J. F. Dotzauer (1783—1860) are possibly the most enjoyable duet collection of the five. Six pieces are fugues, and six are national airs, masterfully arranged for two cellos. Among them we even find the French national anthem, labelled “La Marseillaise ou la Caramagnoleâ€, whose story I had a lot of fun unearthing. All duets are written in bass clef, even if one of them goes up to the sixth position. They are perfect for student concerts or just for learning a few beautiful popular songs, all while travelling the world. From there, fun is had in the snow followed by the journey up the ski lift to the top of the ski fields. Then, of course, there is the exhilarating ski journey down the mountain! After more fun in the snow, the day ends, everybody tired but happy!

Since then, the railway itself now removed but the path of it remaining, the tunnel has become the home of thousands of glowworms - a magical and awe-inspiring experience to witness. The piece depicts the journey along the former rail line, the experience of the glowworm tunnel, and the journey back.

En septembre 2018, le guitariste Toby McWilliams a commandé à Cruz l’écriture d’une pièce solo en trois mouvements après avoir entendu ses Five Pieces in C dans l’émission de radio internationale Classical Guitar Alive. McWilliams a demandé que le premier mouvement soit en forme sonate-allegro, suivi de deux autres pièces reflétant les choix de tempo d’une sonatine en trois mouvements typique. Comme c’est le cas pour la plupart des œuvres de Cruz, cette Sonatine a été achevée en tant que musique pure, sans programme sous-jacent. McWilliams requested the first movement to be in sonata-allegro form followed by two other pieces that reflect the tempo choices of a typical three-movement sonatina. As is the case with most of Cruz’s music, this Sonatina was completed as music written for music’s sake. However, in his quest to find titles other than tempo markings, Cruz plucked three words from the correspondence between himself and McWilliams that together, add a personal touch to the collection while suggesting a progression of an imaginary day’s events.A point of interest in the first movement, A theme: Cruz begins on the IV chord and intentionally avoids using a proper I chord throughout. While the B section does begin in the dominant key, it moves quickly towards a D major tonal center.Festival (3rd movement) uses a bitonal opening theme: E major in the top voice while the bass line uses E minor.

Russian Sailors' Dancefrom the ballet “The Red Poppyâ€Â  Reinhold Moritsevich Gliere was a prominent Soviet composer who was best known for his compositions that were inspired by folk music of Russia and its republics.  Prokofiev and Khachaturian were his students.  Originally written for orchestra, Russian Sailors Dance is from Gliere’s ballet “The Red Poppyâ€. This arrangement of Russian Sailors Dance is scored for piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, bass flute and optional contrabass flute playing the bass flute part.  If only five players are available, the alto flute part may be omitted and alto flute cues should be played.  Suggested tempos are marked at each tempo change.  Please note that there is no tempo change at letter I, only a change of mood. In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015
