Two pages of music.Neve (pronounced NEEV) is an ancestral name within my family, to whom this piece is dedicated. The word appears in multiple languages and has a variety of meanings. In British English, Neve has two definitions, both of which have long been out of common usage. The first definition refers to a younger male relative such as a nephew or grandson. The second refers to a spendthrift. Neve is also found in Irish as a girl’s name. In various Latin and Romance languages, it refers to snow or glaciers. Neve is one of a set of four pieces composed in late 2019 and early 2020. The publication of the entire set is forthcoming, but I am also offering Neve here as a short standalone work. Composed for guitar solo, Neve evokes a young boy’s leisurely daydream. The 3/2 time signature, marked andante, and opening G major tonality convey the sense of a lazy weekend day outside in the woods or by the water. Like many daydreams, Neve starts out simply before wandering off into different moods and ideas. A recurring transitional passage (set as a quasi hemiola) serves to modulate to new tonal areas, each of which has its own distinct character. The brief section in A Dorian is marked con moto and evokes the thoughts of excitement and adventure. This is followed by a contrapuntal section in E minor with hints of Dorian. The mood here is more subdued and perhaps even melancholy. The penultimate section in C# minor (with hints of pentatonic and Phrygian) suggests a longing for faraway exotic places before returning to G major to end the piece.

Published by Daniel Luna de Menezes (A0.914004). Floco de Neve I (Snowflake I) is a piece for piano and clarinet composed by the Brazilian composer Daniel Luna de Menezes in 2009. This piece uses some of the Modes of Limited Transposition (also known as Messiaen's Modes) to make a exotic harmonic and melodic character. The name comes from the Koch Snowflake, a fractal based on triangles. The harmonic progressions was organized in a system of ways that makes a geometrical structure similar to the Koch Snowflake.This is a good piece to study atonal music and unconventional scales keeping a friendly and intuitive sound, with no excess of aggressive dissonances and harmony composed with tonal-like triads and tetrads (but unconventional progressions).This piece was praised by Professor Eric Ewazen (American composer and teacher) in a masterclass in 2010.Notes:- Contains both Piano Accompaniment Part (piano part with clarinet small staff) and Clarinet in Bb Part- The Clarinet part is already transposed (this piece have no key signature)- Piano part is in Folio size. The song is notable for its serene yet pointed melody and its unique lyrics, which compare Queen Guinevere to the object of the singer's affection, referred to as mi'lady. In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. I have arranged the song in standard tuning as re-tuning your guitar can be very time consuming. In order to do this successfully I have made some changes to the original accompaniment, nothing drastic and the feel of the guitar part is still the same. The version for trio (guitar and two flutes) is taken from the various live performances and has an extended structure compared to the original song. The harmony has a deliberate mediaeval feel to it in keeping with the atmosphere of the song. You could use any two instruments for this, on the recording I made of this arrangement  for the album The Great Music Of Crosby Stills Nash And Young (2021) I used guitars for everything.

This the vocal arrangement, there is also an instrumental trio arrangement. The vocal part is tricky because of the rhythm while the accompanying guitar is challenging not only for the unusual time signatures but also a complex left hand at times requiring long stretches. The song has three verses all of which are sung slightly differently from each other therefore the vocal part has no repeats while the guitar part does. I have given the lyrics here as well as in the song as the meaning is important and not obvious at first glance.

While most soloists will undoubtedly opt to use alto or soprano, the composer welcomes renditions of this piece on any of the larger saxes as well. This piece was inspired by Nevermore: An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe, a single act play featuring Jeffrey Combs. My good friend, Dr. Brent Bristow of Arkansas State University, Beebe, convinced me to go see the play when it was presented there in March of 2018. That performance by the legendary Mr. Combs inspired this piece. Why unaccompanied saxophone? Brent Bristow and I have been close friends since high school, and since he is the one who convinced me to see this show, and given that he plays classical saxophone (yes, that IS a thing!), I figured saxophone would kill two birds with one reed… or something like that. The show itself is a one-man performance, so that’s why this piece is unaccompanied. I toyed with the notion of including some text from the show. Eventually, I decided to go with The Raven, which is featured prominently in Combs’ monologue. But I didn’t want to RELY on The Raven, so I wrote the piece in such a way that it can be performed with OR without the narrator. I took a bit of inspiration from Bach’s cello music and brought in some more modern elements such as shifting meters and limited use of slap-tongue and multiphonics to keep things interesting. No altissimo is used.This work would make for excellent solo repertoire at the collegiate level, while still being potentially accessible to advanced high school players. If the narrator is used, this work would also be great as part of a Halloween/horror variety show!You may note that the mp3 demo preview uses a cello sound (placing the transposition in the range of the baritone sax, though again, any saxophone is acceptable). A cello sound is used because samples of saxophone sounds generally leave much to be desired, and they are most commonly based on jazz tone qualities which would be completely inappropriate for this piece.
