Odd-numbered movements focus on atmospheric textures, while even-numbered movements dwell on stars and galaxies. Movement I, Vocalise I, is inspired by street lights casting a copper hue against a dark cobalt sky. Movement II, Choose Something Like a Star, shifts between subdued and bright registers of the voice and piano to illustrate the contrast of the stars in the night sky. Movement III, Intermezzo, drives the listener to a country road on a cloudy night with pine trees on either side while the high beams illuminate the path. Frequent 16th notes in this movement create a motor-like motion. Compound meter with quick 16th notes in Movement IV, Returning, imparts a buoyant character that floats through different galaxies along with frequent use of Lydian and Myxolydian Modes and the Acoustic Scale. Movement V, Vocalise II, paints a picture of a hilly grass field and a parking lot on a cloudy and rainy night, surrounded by lights with a muffled glow.

Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. The arrangement starts with an introduction of the melody in arpeggios of natural harmonics and moves into broken chords mixed with arpeggios for the first rendering of the song in 6/8 time. In the second part, at the shift to 4/4 time, the melody is rendered in an African inspired version with natural harmonics reminiscent of tunes played on an African kalimba (thumb harp) woven into the broken chords and arpeggios. As the speed increases, and the volume decreases, the arrangement moves steadily toward a total kalimba version. I like to think of the first part of the arrangement as symbolising a night in the little Austrian village where Gruber lived and composed the song. The natural harmonics and base notes and treble notes on open strings denoting the village chapel bells ringing on Christmas Eve. The second part tries to give a feel for how the melody can stand as a symbol of our common human origins in Africa, celebrating the birth and unity of humanity. The arrangement is within reach of intermediate to advanced students of guitar and is a good introduction to natural harmonics on the twelfth, seventh, and fifth frets. The African inspired polyrhythm fingerpicking in the second part consists basically of the thumb alternating with the index and middle fingers in a repetitive cycle. The second part is notated in 4/4 time, but can perhaps be more easily be read and played as 8/8 time, as practically everything, especially towards the end of the arrangement consists of eight notes. The polyrhythmic second part should have an accent on the downbeat of the first beat of the measure followed by an accent at 3and (an upbeat), just before the fourth and final beat of the measure. Reading the four part harmony of the score may at first present a challenge but if played basically as eight notes followed by eight notes everything should come out right in the end. Refer to the mp3 version provided with the score if in doubt. I do not mark the natural harmonics explicitly in the tablature, there are simply too many of them. The diamond shaped notes in the notation denoting harmonics are found directly above the corresponding fingerings in the tablature. It has been a real joy to work with this arrangement of the song and I hope it brings joy to others in playing it, giving new life to the traditional melody.

This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep.The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective.The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. The first verse mentions Gaye's song What's Going On, while the second verse mentions Jackie Wilson's Baby Workout and (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.

Published by G. Meredith Publications (A0.1501543). This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Legend or history, you can decide. But the tale is told that the organ was broken for the Christmas Eve service in Arsdorf Germany in 1818.
