Moonlight Serenade for Tuba Quintet (Jazz for 5 Series)

Tuba, Euphonium, Tuba Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Glenn Miller. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, Jazz, Swing, Old-time. Score, Set of Parts. 8 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Moonlight Serenade" arranged here for Tuba Quintet, is an American popular song composed by Glenn Miller with subsequent lyrics by Mitchell Parish. It was an immediate phenomenon when first released in May 1939 as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller’s signature tune. In 1991, Miller’s recording of "Moonlight Serenade" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.<br> <br> The song, recorded on April 4, 1939 on RCA Bluebird, was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. pop charts in 1939, reaching number three on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for fifteen weeks. It was the number 5 top pop hit of 1939 in the Billboard year-end tally. Glenn Miller had five records in the top 20 songs of 1939 on Billboard′s list.<br> <br> In the UK, "Moonlight Serenade" was released as the A-side of a 78 on His Master’s Voice, with "American Patrol" as the B-side. The recording reached number twelve in the UK in March 1954, staying on the chart for one week. In a medley with "Little Brown Jug" and "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade" reached number thirteen on the UK charts in January 1976, in a chart run of eight weeks.<br> <br> The recording was also issued as a V-Disc, No. 39A, in November 1943.<br> <br> The recording used a clarinet-led saxophone section, which is widely considered[citation needed] the classic Glenn Miller style. Miller studied the Schillinger technique with Joseph Schillinger, who is credited with helping Miller create the "Miller sound", and under whose tutelage he himself composed "Moonlight Serenade".<br> <br> The song evolved from a 1935 version entitled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep", with music by Glenn Miller and lyrics by Eddie Heyman to a version called "Gone with the Dawn" with lyrics by George Simon, and "The Wind in the Trees" with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. In his biography of Glenn Miller, George T. Simon recounted how vocalist Al Bowlly of the Ray Noble Orchestra sang him the Eddie Heyman lyrics to the Glenn Miller music of "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep" in 1935. The Noble Orchestra never recorded the song. Finally it ended up as "Moonlight Serenade" because Robbins Music bought the music and learned that Miller was recording a cover of "Sunrise Serenade", a Frankie Carle associated song, for RCA Victor. They thought "Moonlight" would be a natural association for "Sunrise".<br> <br> "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep" was composed in 1935 with lyrics by Eddie Heyman and music by Glenn Miller. After "Moonlight Serenade", originally released solely as an instrumental, became a smash hit in 1939, Mitchell Parish wrote new lyrics for the music under that title.<br> <br> A notable vocal version can be found on Frank Sinatra’s Moonlight Sinatra released in 1965, which also contains "Moon Love", "Moonlight Becomes You", and "Oh, You Crazy Moon", which were recorded by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. "Moonlight Serenade" can also be found on Nothing But the Best, a 2008 Frank Sinatra greatest hits compilation by Reprise, on My Way: The Best of Frank Sinatra from 1997 by Warner Bros., and the Frank Sinatra compilation Greatest Love Songs from 2002. Frank Sinatra also released the song as part of an 7" EP 33RPM single in 1966, Reprise SR1018. The song also appeared on the 2015 centennial collection Ultimate Sinatra. In 1939, Count Basie and His Orchestra recorded one of the earliest versions to feature the lyrics added by Mitchell Parish which was released as a 78 single, Vocalion 5036.<br> <br> "Moonlight Serenade" has been covered by Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, The Airmen of Note of the U.S. Air Force with Air Force Strings, Charlie Haden, Marc Reift, Chet Baker with The Mariachi Brass in 1966, Santo and Johnny, Thelma Houston, Carol Burnett, Toots Thielemans, Deodato, who reached number 18 on the Billboard Easy Listening Chart, Count Basie and his Orchestra with vocals by Helen Humes in 1939, Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, Cab Calloway, The Modernaires, Gene Krupa and his Orchestra, Freddy Martin and his Orchestra, Bert Kaempfert, Ray Conniff, Mina, Dick Todd on RCA Bluebird, Geoff Love and His Orchestra, Lloyd Gregory on solo guitar, Dick Hyman, Maxwell Davis and his Orchestra, Tony Evans, Los Indios Tabajaras, David Rose, Richard Himber, Fi Dells Quartet, Waikikis, The Universal-International Orchestra conducted by Joseph Gershenson, Oleg Lundstrom, Charlie Byrd, Taco, Alix Combelle, Richard Vaughn, Lisa Ono, Eddie Maynard, Simone Kopmajer, Hamburg Philharmonia, Frankie Capp, Dave, Robert Banks Trio, Karel Vlach, Transatlantic Swing Band, the Frankie Condon Orchestra, The Romantic Strings, Paul Mauriat, Tommy Leonetti, Johnny Desmond, the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart, Charlie Calello Orchestra, J.P. Can any other record match ’Moonlight Serenade’ for its ability to induce a Pavlovian slobber in so many for so long?" (The New Yorker, May 24, 2004).<br> <br> "Moonlight Serenade" released as V-Disc 39A, VP 75, Theme Song, by the U.S. War Department in November 1943. In November 1939, Miller had a 15-minute radio series on CBS called Moonlight Serenade that ran three times a week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 PM Eastern Time (shifting to 7:15 PM in May 1942), until September 1942, sponsored by Chesterfield.<br> <br> Wartime release:<br> <br> The 1939 RCA Victor studio recording of "Moonlight Serenade" was released by the U.S. War Department as V-Disc 39A, VP 75, Theme Song, in November, 1943. The recording was also released on the Navy V-Disc No. 160A. A V-Disc test pressing of a recording of the song from November 17, 1945 by the AAF Band was made but the disc was not issued. A new recording by Glenn Miller with the American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Forces was broadcast to Germany in 1944 on the radio program The Wehrmacht Hour.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? My JuneIV. Hello, I’m Johnny CashPiano Trio No. 1 (Poets and Prophets) was composed by Mark O’Connor during the Fall of 2003. The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music. My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.817619 Composed by James Bland. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Spiritual,Traditional. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #424503. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1006442 Composed by David Jaedyn Conley. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 113 pages. Mydnyte Publishing #2016293. Published by Mydnyte Publishing (A0.1006442). This is a programmatic piece about nightfall, night, and the dawn. Having worked primarily nightshift for the past few years, my life began a somewhat alternative nature – my day time was illuminated by the moon, and I watched the sun rise every day for three and a half years…I saw the city through different eyes, and watched as various denizens of the night would emerge and cavort beneath The Midnight Sun. I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didn’t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn – the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream. David Jaedyn Conley, 2005 Composer David Jaedyn Conley moves easily between the stridency of the Moderns and the sweetness of the Romantics. He is equally adept at writing polyrhythmic ensemble percussion and lyrical contrapuntal melodies. The result is both lush and austere, always evocative. CNET.COM.

First of all, let me thank you for taking the time to look at this little song I wrote. Although it is not a very big composition, it is definitely one of my favorites. It was originally written for tenor and piano, but please feel free to adapt it for any voice. You can hear it here: https://youtu.be/OYsXigQ1R7w It can be sung by male or female voices because the sentiment it expresses is one that I think we can all identify with: being in love or totally captivated with someone or something which seems so much higher, brighter, purer, and more lovely than ourselves and hoping, against all odds, they might notice us and feel something other than pity or revulsion. This song springs from that secret and tender spot in our human hearts which so often, like a millipede, curls up in a ball to protect itself when poked at and prodded by others. If you sing this song, don’t worry about singing it well. Try sing it honestly, instead. And, no matter how dark it may seem, I hope your heart will find some comfort in the company of this little millipede and the bright moon which shines above us. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time on dimitri.roussopoulos@gmail.com should you have any questions.Duration: about 4min 21sec

Cello,Double Bass,Drums,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.746789 By Henry Mancini. By Henry Mancini. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Jazz. 12 pages. Keith Terrett #3530209. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746789). An arrangement of Moon River for String Orchestra and optional drum kit. Moon River is a song composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was originally performed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 American movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song also won the 1962 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. 「ムーンリãƒãƒ¼ã€ã¯ã€ãƒ˜ãƒ³ãƒªãƒ¼ãƒ»ãƒžãƒ³ã‚·ãƒ¼ãƒ‹ãŒä½œæ›²ã—ã€ã‚¸ãƒ§ãƒ‹ãƒ¼ãƒ»ãƒžãƒ¼ã‚µãƒ¼ãŒæŒè©žã‚’書ã„ãŸæ›²ã§ã™ã€‚ã‚‚ã¨ã‚‚ã¨ã¯1961å¹´ã®ã‚¢ãƒ¡ãƒªã‚«æ˜ 画「ティファニーã§æœé£Ÿã‚’ã€ã§ã‚ªãƒ¼ãƒ‰ãƒªãƒ¼ãƒ»ãƒ˜ãƒ—ãƒãƒ¼ãƒ³ãŒæŒã„ã€ã‚¢ã‚«ãƒ‡ãƒŸãƒ¼è³žã®æŒæ›²è³žã‚’å—賞ã—ã¾ã—ãŸã€‚ã¾ãŸã€1962å¹´ã®ã‚°ãƒ©ãƒŸãƒ¼è³žã®æœ€å„ªç§€ãƒ¬ã‚³ãƒ¼ãƒ‰è³žã¨æœ€å„ªç§€æ¥½æ›²è³žã‚‚å—賞ã—ã¾ã—ãŸã€‚ It became the theme song for Andy Williams, who first recorded it in 1961 and performed it at the Academy Awards ceremony in 1962. He sang the first eight bars of the song at the beginning of each episode of his eponymous television show and named his production company and venue in Branson, Missouri after it. His autobiography is called Moon River and Me. Williams' version was never released as a single, but it charted as an LP track that he recorded for Columbia on a hit album of 1962. Cadence Records' president Archie Bleyer disliked Williams' version, as Bleyer believed it had little or no appeal to teenagers. Forty years later in 2002, a 74-year-old Williams sang the song at the conclusion of the live telecast of the NBC 75th Anniversary Special to a standing ovation. The song's success was responsible for relaunching Mercer's career as a songwriter, which had stalled in the mid-1950s because rock and roll had replaced jazz standards as the popular music of the time. The song's popularity is such that it has been used as a test sample in a study on people's memories of popular songs. Comments about the lyrics have noted that they are particularly reminiscent of Mercer's youth in the Southern United States and his longing to expand his horizons. Robert Wright wrote in The Atlantic Monthly, This is a love sung to wanderlust. Or a romantic song in which the romantic partner is the idea of romance. An inlet near Savannah, Georgia, Johnny Mercer's hometown, was named Moon River in honor of him and this song. Moonglow, reports Wikipedia, has been recorded no less than 572 times on its way from 1933 band theme for Will Hudson (who composed it with Irving Mills) to jazz standard. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, is adapted from a piano version from one of those Reader's Digest compilations of old favorites. This rendition actually opens with By The Light Of The Silvery Moon from composer Gus Edwards in 1909. It was part of a Broadway show called Miss Innocence which lasted almost an entire two weeks before it shut down. The tune was more durable. It was sung by the Three Stooges (!) in a 1933 film, and Doris Day sang it in a 1953 movie for which the song provided the title. If you need different instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. Enjoy!!!Audio link: https://thomasoboelee.bandcamp.com/album/symphony-no-7-roman-holidays-2008-rev-2013Video link: https://youtu.be/1DlzEOUmH54

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1073979). There is a Chopinesque quality to this piece, but with a haunting, unsettled aspect more reminiscent of Scriabin as it searches for an ever-elusive rest. It is a walk through the woods at the end of Autumn, when the leaves are all but gone and the ghostly branches reach their skeletal fingers toward the moonlit sky. The clouds float across the sky, blotting out the light of the moon as you find yourself descending deeper into an almost hypnotic trance. There is the tolling of a bell off in the distance. It does not waver, hanging on to a single note as the harmonies change beneath in the left hand while the opening melody returns. There is a change in mood as the music becomes more chromatic while shifting between two chords until it finally resolves and the opening melody returns. As it comes to a close, there is no sense of resolution…rather it ends with a question.

Skyfall is the twenty-third film in the James Bond series, produced by EON Productions and distributed by MGM and Sony Pictures Entertainment through its Columbia Pictures division. It features Daniel Craig's third performance as James Bond, and Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the film's antagonist. The film was directed by Sam Mendes and written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. As a stand-alone adventure, it doesn't directly continue the story arc of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace but does occur within the same continuity. In the film, Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.Skyfall premiered in London on October 23, 2012 and was released on October 26, 2012 in the United Kingdom and on November 9, 2012 in the United States. It was the first James Bond film to be screened in IMAX venues, although it was not filmed with IMAX cameras. The film's release coincided with the 50th anniversary of the James Bond series, which began with Dr. No in 1962. Skyfall became the highest grossing Bond film of all time and grossed $1.108 billion worldwide, which made it the seventh highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release (behind Avatar, Titanic, The Avengers, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King). It is currently the 28th highest-grossing film of all time. It was also the highest-grossing film distributed by Columbia, surpassing Spider-Man 3, until it was surpassed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.<br> <br> This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard’s global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. Published by Ralph Nance (A0.1033008). Go where no Mancini has gone before! In this SSA arrangement, Moon River, a song of longing, changes in style even as we grow through life's stages.. Beginning with a whimsical jazz styling, it moves into sweet traditional harmonies, only to break forth into an English modal lyricism. Finally, a gentle solo yields to a triumphant expression of the longing for beauty at the heart of us all.Note to SMP: During Covid, I at this time have to no choir, so am sending an mp3 in which instruments sub for voices. I hope the score sings for itself. The score excerpt features the modal variations on the theme.
