He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

This should be within the grasp of a good high school group, and has enough variety to be enjoyed by advanced players. (ASPN pitch notation) Of particular interest for trombonists are the falls and interplay between the melody and the echo parts. It is hard to find a tune that does a better job of capturing the pride of the Irish than Harrigan. Harrigan was written for the musical Fifty Miles From Boston which opened February 3, 1908 and closed a month later. The song title is a tribute to the Irish-American actor, Edward Harrigan. While the other major songs from the musical are rarely performed, Harrigan found favor with audiences. Born to Irish parents, it shouldn't be surprising that Cohan's lyrics, proud of all the Irish that is in me have a heart-felt ring to them. It didn't hurt that another actor of Irish descent, James Cagney, sang the piece in the very successful production about Cohan, Yankee Doodle Dandy. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

Published by NoteForge (A0.1448781). Course of Empire takes its title and theme from a series of paintings by Thomas Cole. Over the course of these five paintings, an imaginary city rises and falls. A large boulder atop a cliff watches the scenes unfold: a wild and untamed landscape in the first painting; an agrarian, peaceful, arcadian state in the second; a decadent celebration in the third; the sack and destruction of the city in the fourth; and the ruins in the last.I tried to work unifying musical motives throughout the quintet. The first movement, The State of Nature, begins with a twelve-tone texture. There is no sense of tonal hierarchy or pitch center. The music is in a state of balance, adhering to a natural system not discernable to the listener. The bassoon introduces the main motive representing the cliff, a pastoral sort of hiccup.The second movement, Daydreams of Arcadia, begins with and develops the cliff motive, and has a more defined tonality. There is more action throughout the movement, as we’re led to the peaceful beginnings of civilization. The Empire motive, a series of syncopated chords, shows up toward the end of the movement: This is the beginning of the end, where our imaginary city makes the change from existing in harmony with nature to conquering it.The third movement, Fulfillment of Empire, begins with a cliff motive that has been added to, almost to the point of unrecognizability. Scenes of empire are shown musically, from a grand parade, to a show of naval forces, to the temple that occupies most of the painting. The Empire theme returns, expanded upon, but somehow sounding a little overextended.The fourth movement, The Fall, alternates between unfriendly chords (and noises) and the Empire motive. Every iteration of the Empire motive gets a little weaker, as the foundations of the civilization are destroyed. The movement ends with a lone flute.Movement five, Redemption, features some scenes that are familiar, but are now in ruins. The movement slips slowly back into the twelve-tone texture from the beginning. The Empire motive, or something like it, makes a brief appearance and passes through the ensemble, starting in the upper voices and sinking into the lower.

As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. As the star themes gently roll by, the harmony grows warmer and the melody becomes more grandiose in preparation for the final star-rise: the arrival of the morning sun. The first theme (mm 5-20) should have a very ethereal, mysterious character, which is characterized by its key of g minor. The second theme (mm 21-28) is somewhat brighter, with the sun trying to work its way through the mists. The mists conquer the sun as the first theme returns (mm 33-40). Finally, the sun is victorious and shines brightly through the mists (mm 41-54). Notice how the music moves to a major key and the piano accompaniment is much more energetic and joyful. Your playing should convey those feelings. As night falls, though, the mists move back in as the first theme returns once again, and the whole piece fades into calm, mist-covered darkness.

A song from Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta Iolanthe, arranged for semi-flexible woodwind combination of two flutes plus either B-flat clarinet or bassoon. This jaunty tune could be a fun recital piece or just a nice addition to general repertoire.
W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were major figures in musicaltheatre of the Victorian era, collaborating on a series of extremely popularcomic operettas, which lampooned some of the fashions and conventions of thetime.
This duet from the second act of Iolanthe involves Strephon, the half-fairy, half-mortal son of thetitular character, and Phyllis, the lady whom he loves. The two have just become reconciled after arift and recognise that they should marry quickly, before they lose theirattraction for one another, or one of them falls for someone else.

The first chorus features the baritone sax, bass trombone and bass, which are joined in the second chorus by the full trombone section. An optionally open solo section beginning at 2:09 provides opportunity for several players to stretch. A low trombone and sax background riff during the solo section builds to a full ensemble chorus at 2:36 based on the riff. Following is a swinging trumpet soli. It falls in the easy category and should be able to be accomplished by players as young as first, maybe second year. It goes through a few iterations of the melody and passes it around many times from each instrument to the next. You can choose to swing all or part of it in order to sound more like the original. I didn't choose to notate that to make it more accessible to younger players. Suggested combinations: Brass Quintet Woodwind Quintet (mix-match of flute, oboe, clarinet including bass, alto saxophone, tenor sax, baritone sax) Woodwind Quintet (standard - flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, bassoon) Saxophone Quintet Mix-match between brass and woodwinds Full Band - as a flexible instrumentation ensemble This piece falls into my larger chamber music initiative that seeks to create accessible, ready to play arrangements and compositions to get young musicians PLAYING MUSIC with others. Because it is so adjustable, many different combinations can be used in order to facilitate music making. A great example, a middle school band director can teach the piece as a full ensemble piece, then break the group into smaller groups (i.e. flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet.. or whatever works with the band director's instrumentation!).
