This body of poetry is diverse in the extreme: including both works of pro-war patriotism and glorification, and anti-war poems about the horrors and futility of the conflict. Laurence Binyon was too old to enlist in the British Army, but he served as an orderly in field hospitals in France. Excerpts from his poem “For the Fallen†are often presented under the title “Ode To Remembrance.†Here, I have chosen the second, third and sixth stanzas.

This is an outstandingly atmospheric piece of music, the final part of Holst's choral work 'Ode to Death'. Holst composed this work in response to the First World War. He dedicated it to his musical friend Cecil Coles and "the others" who were killed in that war. The breath-takingly beautiful tune is supported by other-worldly harmonies and an unusual 7/4 rhythm to create music of immense presence. It works really beautifully on the organ: a wonderful piece for recitals, meditative services, remembrance or to play on your own for the sheer reward offered by this exceptional music. Also a great piece for demonstrating different solos and effects of the organ, including a great outlet for the Vox Humana, solo Flute and quiet Strings. Even bells, if you're lucky enough to have a set on your instrument!

The piece has two tonal centers of Bb minor and C# minor, a couple transitions, and two distinct thematic areas. Unusual and original, this 5 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improve over. I used it in church for a prelude and it was well received with a jamming drummer. Fun Stuff.

In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. It stays on white keys D to D, then changes briefly to D Major with the accompanying F# and C#, then returns back to Dorian. There are fully notated ornaments which create charm. The transparency of two independent voices and the use of repeated material makes this a first step in preparing a student for the works of Scarlatti or Purcell. The programmatic comments set this piece in Ireland, about a hundred years ago. .

Kaye Bird was also a resident of Indiana, PA for 37 years and was a well respected teacher in the public schools there. Set Free to go Home was premiered by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Symphony Band at Fisher Auditorium on February 6, 2020, conducted by Dr. Jason Worzbyt. It is agrade 3 band piece with a duration of five minutes. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow oldâ€) has become known as the “Ode of Remembranceâ€, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Postâ€. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle†portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust†compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plainâ€. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight†(reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The History of the Four Immortal Chaplains and the United States Army HymnDuring World War II, four Army chaplains met at the Army Chaplains School at Harvard University. ere, they received training for their assignments in the European theater. They then boarded and sailed on the United States Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester to report to their new assignments. The USAT Dorchester left New York on January 23, 1943, en route to Greenland. She carried about 900 military personnel and was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba, and Comanche. During the early morning hours of February 3, 1943, the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223 off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. As the Dorchester sank on that fateful day of February 3, 1943, the four Army chaplains on board helped their soldiers board lifeboats as they handed out life jackets. When they ran out of life jackets, the chaplains gave their own life jackets to four soldiers that they might live. Then the chaplains joined arms and prayed as they went down with the Dorchester. These were young chaplains, new to the Army, holding the rank of first lieutenant. They included Methodist minister Reverend George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic priest Father John P. Washington, and Reformed Church in America minister Reverend Clark V. Poling. e four chaplains were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. Chaplain (MAJ) James F. Linzey, USA (Ret.), who was one of four military chaplains in his family, composed the United States Army Hymn, “Eternal Father, Hear Our Prayer,” in remembrance of the “Four Immortal Chaplains” on board the Dorchester. Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) composed his Pictures at an Exhibition -- A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann in 1874 as a suite of ten pieces (with a recurring Promenade) for piano, representing paintings by Hartmann. The Bydlo section depicted cattle or oxen slowly pulling a cart with enormous wheels. Maurice Ravel orchestrated this section with the high solo given to the French tuba in C (pitched a whole step above the Bb euphonium). The present arrangement gives the melody to the euphoniums, and changes the key from the ungainly G# minor (five sharps) to Bb minor (5 flats). The tempo is very slow, with an eighth-note at 90, at which speed the piece takes about 3 minutes to play. The highest pitches are a high Bb for Euphoniums 1 and 2, and the Bb a step under middle C for Tuba 1. Good high school players should be able to handle this level, which is intermediate (perhaps advanced intermediate). This piece should be a crowd-pleaser, since it showcases the low-brass instruments rarely given solos. Also, it is a piece that welcomes extra players for both euphoniums and tubas. Parts for both treble- and bass-clef euphoniums are provided.
