Galop Infernal (also known as the 'Can-Can') composed by Jacques Offenbach (1819 - 1880), arranged by Paul Burnell, December 2019, for instruments in four parts.Duration 2:30 The arrangement is suitable for multiple quartet combinations with parts available (and potential instrumentations suggested) as follows: Part 1: C, Bb (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, trumpet/cornet, violin) Part 2: C, Bb (oboe, Bb clarinet, trumpet/cornet, violin) Part 3: C - alto & treble clefs, Bb, F, Eb (Bb clarinet, alto saxophone, horn in F, tenor horn, viola) Part 4: C - bass clef, treble clef in Bb (bassoon, tenor saxophone, trombone, 'cello) Any other appropriate instruments, even if not suggested above, may play. Part 4 may be played an octave lower than written. Although the score is presented with layout appropriate for a brass quartet of two Cornets in Bb, Tenor horn in Eb and Trombone in treble clef with Bb transposition this does not indicate a preferred instrumentation. The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and lasts around 25 minutes.This is mvt IV arranged wind quintet.The original version is a satirical movement which opens with a piano playing a pulsing triplet figure in the higher register. The strings play a slow rendition of the famous Galop infernal (commonly called the Can-can) from Offenbach's operetta Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld).I have given the tune to the horn, with the triplet figures in the other winds. Orphée aux enfers, whose title translates from the French as Orpheus in the Underworld, is an opéra bouffe (a form of operetta), or opéra féerie in its revised version. Its score was composed by Jacques Offenbach to a French text written by Ludovic Halévy and later revised by Hector-Jonathan Crémieux.The work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta. Offenbach's earlier operettas were small-scale one-act works, since the law in France did not allow full-length works of certain genres. Orpheus was not only longer, but more musically adventurous than Offenbach's earlier pieces.This also marked the first time that Offenbach used Greek mythology as a background for one of his pieces. The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck and his Orfeo ed Euridice and culminates in the risqué Galop infernal (Infernal Galop) that shocked some in the audience at the premiere. Other targets of satire, as would become typical in Offenbach's burlesques, are the stilted performances of classical drama at the Comédie-Française and the scandals in society and politics of the Second French Empire.The Infernal Galop from Act 2, Scene 2, is famous outside classical circles as the music for the can-can (to the extent that the tune is widely, but erroneously, called can-can).This arrangement for clarinet quartet includes the following parts: Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet.
