The musical imagery expressed in this tone poem is largely inspired by the Acadian forest, Fundy National Park and other geographical features of Atlantic Canada. This tone poem is split into two movements: Sunrise and Sunset. “Horizons aims to reveal what a sunrise and a sunset on the horizon would sound like in Atlantic Canada. In essence “Horizons†aims to create that picture in the listener mind through music. Horizons is a tone poem that seeks to encapsulate the breathtaking nature found in Atlantic Canada. Drawing its inspiration from the lush Acadian forest,  majestic Fundy National Park, and the diverse geographical landscapes that define Atlantic Canada, this piece vividly translates the essence of these natural wonders into sound. The composition is divided into two movements, Sunrise and Sunset, each crafted to convey the unique ambiance and colors of the Atlantic horizon at these times of the day.In Horizons, orchestral textures are pivotal in painting the auditory landscape. The intricate layering of instrumental timbres and dynamics is akin to the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape. The delicate whispers of the woodwinds evoke the gentle rustle of leaves in the Acadian forest at dawn, while the bold, resonant brass mirrors the dramatic hues that streak the sky at dusk. Strings weave throughout, like the constant ebb and flow of the tides at Fundy Bay. Through Horizons, listeners are invited to embark on an auditory journey that mirrors the experience of witnessing a sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic horizon. The orchestral textures serve as dynamic and integral components of the narrative, bringing to life the serene beauty and the vibrant tapestry of Atlantic Canada's natural landscapes through music.

Emerging aurally with patriotic fervor from the start, this rendition of America the Beautiful is unique in that it is arranged for five flutes. It opens in the key of C, with perfect fifths, creating the sense that something mysterious is on the horizon; then, in the seventh measure, the America theme (a pattern of running sixteenth notes and eighth notes) is heard first in Flute 1, then Flute 2, then Flute 3. Soon after, Flute 4 and then Flute 5 take up the theme, and toward the close of the piece, the same theme is heard in Flutes 3, 5, and then 1 again, respectively. Three verses of America the Beautiful are presented, each portraying the song with added variations, and three keys are surpassed by the close of the work. Very carefully put together and designed to educate the ears of the listener to the end, America the Beautiful will truly be a beautiful addition to the music of any patriotic event.

It is written for snare drum, bass drum, 4 concert toms and tambourine. The snare drum and concert toms parts allow more experienced players to shine while the bass drum and tambourine use only quarter and eighth notes so less experienced players can join in on the fun. The piece begins in full force with the whole group and then settles into a nice groove. The piece builds to a climax, then a snare roll leads into a faster rhythm on the concert toms. After some ups and downs, and some call and response sections, the piece builds to the end. Throughout the piece, each player gets a chance to shine in short  solos.

Don't let the introduction deceive you, Soaring On New Horizons is a lively and thrilling piece. After the first melodic section, listen for the arpeggios to take-off to the adventure on new horizons. A very artistic piece, Soaring On New Horizons is uniquely geared to performance in which both the music and the performer fly (or at least his fingers do). Moreover, at a jaw-dropping finish, if fingers could fly, then they would have just dived into a stunning landing; and if they could breathe, they would most certainly be out of breath.One musical work that greatly influenced and inspired many of the musical techniques was Scherzo No.2 by Chopin.On the score side of things, 15 pages long, the music is in the key of E major and is mostly in 6/8 with many exceptions. Most arpeggios are written as a performer would efficiently play them (switching between hands)-- which makes the score an easier sight-read but also gives the appearance of choppiness rather than flow. This piece is without a doubt an advanced piece mainly for one reason: speed. With a relatively high tempo, changes in meter make timing difficult, but the real challenge comes with the lightning fast arpeggios in the second section.      .

When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

Series 5FC - To make fingering of melodies easy to follow, each 5-finger group begins with a finger number and colored notes. Then successive fingered groups are identified with contrasting colored notes. Notes not belonging in a 5-fingered group are white.This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. The composition unfolds with the allusion of the sun glimmering on ocean waves, followed by the playfulness of eddies and gusts of wind. These themes merge into one another as the wind increases in ferocity, culminating in the start of a storm with sudden strikes of lightning preceded by the reverberation of thunder. The pitter-patter of rain on the water steadily evolves into a full tempest that engulfs the middle section of the piece. As the storm subsides and the ocean calms, night has fallen and the twinkling of stars in the firmament are reflecting upon the water.
