Our edition here removes many musical indications and durational obscurities, and leaves the original notes and the dynamics, the two most important aspects of any score for teaching purposes, especially for the recreational players, who make up the vast majority of most piano students. Some chords respelled, some notes assigned to the opposite hand. Pedaling is assumed rather than written durationally. While it may take some time for the students to get used to the compound meter (12/8), the rhythm of the accompmaniment is kept quite simple. Harder will be the fast tempo and the chromatic finger patterns. The piece also starts with two difficult solos for your most advanced violin or viola players - I recommend having them stand on opposite sides of the front of the stage to help with projection. Have the lower strings focus especially on keeping the light staccato style of the piece - put space in between those grooving notes when the eighth rest is marked. Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett. The violin and the vibraphone. Aside from the letter V, the two instruments have almost nothing in common. We consider: the violin is the most aristocratic instrument in the Western musical tradition, the prima donna of the instrumental world, an instrument that has had, lavished upon it, more extraordinary music than any other since its invention roughly 475 years ago. And then there’s the vibraphone, a percussion instrument with pitched metal bars and motor-driven resonators that produce a vibrato. Invented around 1925, it’s an instrument created for dance bands and popular music. Anything You Can Do . . . is a confrontation between these two musical opposites. A sense of contest characterizes the entire piece, as the vibraphone seeks to establish its bona fides side by side with the violin, which in turn attempts to keep the vibraphone in its place by beating it at its own game. The first movement is conceived as a race, in which each instrument acts like the other – the violin explosively and percussively, and the vibraphone with lengthy bowed passages – while seeking to shake off the other. The movement concludes with the violin paying a series of huge, chords and a long, sustained triple-stop that, much to its fury, the vibraphone manages to match with a sustained double-stop of its own. The movement ends in a draw. The second movement begins with the violin doing its best to match the vibrato patterns of the vibraphone’s variable motor. Ultimately, the violin breaks free and plays a broad, arioso-styled melody. The vibraphone tries to match it, but cannot; try as it might, its fixed range cannot reach the stratospheric heights of the violin. Advantage violin. The third movement is constructed in three sections. In the outer sections, rapidly rising and falling lines and counter rhythms pervade as each instrument seeks to gain an advantage over the other. In the middle section, alternating, hocket-like phrases give way to bent notes and glissandi in the vibraphone, which infuriates the violin (how dare this upstart percussion instrument do something ordinarily associated with me?). The movement concludes with the violin once again attempting to lord its greater range over the vibraphone by playing a long sustained F# - the same pitch that conquered the vibraphone at the end of the second movement – only to have the vibraphone top it by playing a harmonic a full seven notes above the F#. Game, set, match: vibraphone. Some respect, please, for the new kid on the block. Anything You Can Do . . . is dedicated, with a thousand-and-one thanks, to Victor Romasevich and Jack van Geem.

The opposite of firm footing, stability, taking a stand is vacillating between ideas or chasing numerous ideas. ♫ I pictured the wind scattering leaves and debris, but failing to budge heavy objects, anchored to the ground. ♫ Our culture bids us chase after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills … The problem, of course is that the shelf life of the satisfaction that these things brings is very short. Chasing after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills, etc. is like is like chasing the wind. ♫ Portraying chasing the wind allowed me to use some contemporary classical composition techniques such as polymeter, polytonality, and deliberate dissonance. The first theme suggests the futility and inevitable frustration of chasing the wind. Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. (Ex 32:14) ♫ The poetry of the Bible, (like other ancient literature) is full of figures of speech. Figures of speech explain things in words and ideas we can understand. The Bible abounds in figures of speech such as simile (comparison using like or as), metaphor (comparison not using like or as), synecdoche (using a part for the whole), deliberate hyperbole [obvious exaggeration], verbal irony (the tone of voice tells that the speaker means the opposite of the words he or she is using), personification (attributing human features or feelings to animals or inanimate objects), anthropomorphism / anthropopathism (gives human attributes, feelings to God.) [or animals, inanimate objects, cartoon characters.] ♫ God is spirit. (John 1:18, John 4:24) He is infinite, eternal, invisible, undetectable. The humanlike descriptions of God are actually figures of speech that help us understand and identify with Him. Descriptions of God’s eyes, arms, feet, wings, etc. are all figures of speech that tell us God is present everywhere, sees everything, hears everything, and cares about every part of his creation. (God is imminent). ♫ The heavens, even the highest heavens cannot contain Him. (2 Chronicles 2:6, 6:18) God is separate from the universe. (God is transcendent.) Scientific measurements cannot detect Him because He is not in the universe, the universe is in Him. ♫ Just as you can feel your fingers and your toes at the same time, God knows what is happening in every atom of the universe simultaneously. Some even speculate that just looking at the color blue causes the body to create chemicals that are calming. Blue is also symbolic of stability and reliability, inspiring use of this color in the business world in advertising. It is the color of the sky and ocean (reflecting the sky). In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.
