Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q771471). My 3rd String Quartet is in six contrasted movements. Certain musical figures recur across the work, but there are few themes as such. The main emphasis is on contrast of mood, texture, harmony, pacing and timing. Unlike many of my works this quartet had no extra-musical inspiration, and in principle should have no subtitle. Certain features already present in my music became more prominent in this new work: modes (limited collections of pitches) have always helped me to focus musical character, but here a sense of key note for each mode became much more pronounced, as did the difference between modes for each section of the work. A sort of hybrid key-system emerged (even with equivalents of major and minor) which is not normal tonality, nor does it aim to imitate it. Unlike tonality this key-system includes noises, extended performance techniques and intervals outside Western tuning as available resources. What I hope it does is to focus the listening experience onto different musical areas, to encourage a sense of both modulation from one area to another and to give the music a sense of goal. No conscious knowledge of this is needed when listening: the music should communicate directly on its own.Here, then, is this collection of six musical colours, related and unrelated, different yet belonging together, variable yet in a set order. Hence the subtitle, chosen both for both its sound and its sense: ‘hana no hanataba’ meaning, in Japanese, ‘bouquet of flowers’.A brief description:1)Moderately fast. Short droplets of sounds gather increasing momentum. 2)Very fast. Canons and bells at different speeds.3)Very slow – fast – very slow – very fast – very slow. The main slow movement and its main scherzo. An emphasis on non-tempered tunings and on inhaling and exhaling waves of sound. The slow sections feature florid melodic writing. In the exuberant scherzo competing duos and trios create imaginary folk music.4)Extremely fast/extremely slow. Open strings and harmonics fuse into a single string instrument – like a sort of large resonating Medieval tromba marina.5)Very fast. A variation on movement 2). Variation, Schoenberg told Cage, is just a sort of repetition ‘with some things changed and others not.’6)Slow - Very Fast - Fast – Slow. The opening calm harmonies and florid melodies evoke movement 3) in different music. The fast part features one overt theme: a fanfare-like call to attention which is subject to extensive development. There is much use of non-Western tuning. At its climax the music freezes into a frieze – a wall of sound standing in front of the audience with increasing obstinacy and certainty as the work grinds towards its cadence.

Arranged for standard string quartet (NOTE: the audio and video samples are performed by a cellist covering all violin, viola, and cello parts, but the voicing/octaves are identical to the string quartet arrangement). This choral work was originally written by John David for the band Airwaves in 1978. It was later arranged by Peter Knight and recorded by the King's Singers. This transcription for strings follows the very popular King's Singers version. The song is about 2 1/2 minutes long, and easy to read for all string parts. Doublestops could be skipped for beginning players. Bowings are included to facilitate uniform ensemble playing. It is a secular song but is often used by church choirs. It is a lovely ensemble piece when played by string quartet, and can be used for weddings, memorial services, or any occasion requiring hopeful or somber music. According to the composer: The inspiration for New Day was quite simple; I had just had a major blow in my personal life, and was sitting alone late at night on the settee feeling very low, and watching an ominous story on the news about the very real possibility of nuclear war. I started singing to the (hopefully) soon-to arrive New Day like it was an entity, that would rescue me from the depths. If the sun came up and the birds started singing as usual then I could believe that it really was the new day in which life would go on, and in which hope would survive.

José Juventino Policarpo Rosas Cadenas (25 January 1868 - 9 July 1894) was a Mexican composer, violinist, and band leader.Rosas was born in Santa Cruz de Galeana, Guanajuato, in a poor Otomi Native American family. In his youth he did whatever he could related to music, from ringing church bells to playing violin on the street, making music for his living from age 7 on. He used music for his ambitions to better himself, including composing a waltz in exchange for a pair of shoes.He moved to Mexico City and soon became a well known musician and composer. At age 12 he was playing violin in one of the city's most popular dance bands. In his early teens, he worked accompanying well known singer Angela Peralta. Although he applied twice for entrance to the National Music Conservatory and briefly studied there, he was mostly self taught.Rosas led a large orchestra and a brass band that toured internationally.Rosas's best known work is Sobre las Olas or Over the Waves. This classic waltz has often been mistakenly thought by many to be Viennese, and frequently attributed to Johann Strauss II. It was first published by Rosas in 1884 when he was in New Orleans, Louisiana with the popular Mexican band at the World Cotton Centennial World's Fair. (It was later republished in Mexico and Europe in 1888, and 1891; these later years are sometimes incorrectly given as the piece's first publication date.) Rosas died in Surgidero de Batabanó, Cuba. This piece is a tribute to the many naval explorers and their crews that sailed in the stormy, 'Storm Bay ' seas.History and Inspiration: Storm Bay Shanty Storm Bay is the opening of the river leading to Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. It was named by Abel Tasman on the 30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.

A cross-genre composition for piano, field recordings, and electronic soundscapes. A composition to resolve the story and dramatic tension. War is over, POW's have been rescued, peace has returned. The music offers an optimistic message. A new start for Mirla and Arthur; a new beginning for post-war Australia; and better relationships with Japan and the wider Pacific region in the hope of forming a lasting stability. The closing movement (a shift to Major G key) begins with two woozy piano refrains, which unify. Ambient textures include birdsong recorded at the graves of my grandparents and mother. There’s a slow unfurling of the majestic string arrangements that play above a gently rolling electronic rhythm. After the swelling strings and a burning crescendo the track ends with a poignant recording of Mirla in her old age, remembering the first moment she saw Arthur on his return from war. A solo violin plays-out a final farewell, a salute to multitudes affected by the violent acts of war. The violin fades and we are left with the timeless rhythm of ocean waves and eternal birdsong.
