The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871. The obituary published in Signale für die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well. Grand fantasia and brilliant variations: for the flute, on Paganini's air The witches dance, with an accompaniment for the pianoforte. Composed & dedicated to his friend G. Rudall Esqre., by T. Bucher.This publication was listed as new in the last month in October 1832 in the Harmonicon. George Rudall, (1781-1871), founder of Rudall and Rose in 1821. An arrangement of Paganini’s Witches Dance (his op. 8) was already published in volume one of the Flutonicon (1834).

It could almost be regarded to be an antipode to his image of the bewitched violinist – in 1820, he had published the famous Capricci, Op. 1, with Ricordi. The fact that Paganini himself never played his most famous virtuoso pieces in concert has long been forgotten. All his other compositions are proof of his legendary art of violin playing which, according to a number of different legends, had its origin in a pact with the devil.

Key: A minor.The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazıl Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned 24th Capriccio, transforming it into variations on jazz requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the 24th Capriccio. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various developmental passages and transitional improvisations while interpreting this work in concert. Furthermore, when the work is considered as a short encore piece, it is abbreviated in a manner deemed suitable by Say.

When playing the original 41 measures of this piece in 2019, Fraser noted that the music had some resemblance to works by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This encouraged Fraser to compose the remainder of this piece in a manner reminiscent of Rachmaninoff and, consequently, author a suite of solo piano pieces as homages to some of his favorite composers.In the “Adagio†section, which starts on Page 3, Fraser uses an inversion of a small melody from Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 4, variation 18. Specifically, Rachmaninoff’s piece starting with the D-flat of beat one in measure 9 going backwards to measure 8 to the C, B-flat, A-flat and B-flat of the fourth beat is replicated in Fraser’s piece in the pickup to beat three through beat four of measure 10, however with rhythmic changes. Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981232). Composer NotesHiJinx! was commissioned by clarinetist Peter Wright in the spring of 2013. It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos. The work was composed between December and March with Peter's mischievous personality constantly in mind, thus the inclusion of random quotations from opera, chamber music and popular song.HiJCloud: HiJinx!List of themes as occurring in the score: 1.
