Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787312 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Score and parts. 42 pages. Burke & Bagley #50567. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787312). Scored for Piccolo, Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb 1, 2 & 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone 1 & 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, 2 & 3, Horn in F 1 & 2, Trombone 1 & 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Snare Drum and Marimba. Also available in arrangements for string quartet, string orchestra, clarinet quartet, clarinet choir and flute quartet. My father enjoyed singing, particularly when the family went on road trips. One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. A Back to School 2015 feature.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.891096 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Diana L. Appler. Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 49 pages. Diana L. Appler #6689843. Published by Diana L. Appler (A0.891096). Mendelssohn abhorred Victor Hugo’s play Ruy Blas however he deemed worthy the Leipzig Theatrical Pension Fund who were producing the play. He hurriedly composed an overture in standard early romantic sonata form with dark opening chords, two distinct themes, development, restatement, and a final coda. Originally scored for winds, brass and strings, this orchestration contrasts colors between brass and woodwinds where the strings were contrasted between the woodwinds and brass. This overture is still popular today with audiences and is fun to perform. A lyrical melody contrasts with running scale passages providing excitement and technical challenge. Grade 3+ to 4. Oversize score: Legal size 8 ½ X 14, Score only. Parts sold separately.

Small Ensemble Cello,Oboe,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.837000 Composed by Jay Vosk. Contemporary. Score and parts. 5 pages. Jay Vosk #2025045. Published by Jay Vosk (A0.837000). Lyric Passages is a work in four brief movements. The movements alternate in mood between introspective and playful. A common thread throughout the piece is a lyric section in whole or part of each movement. The first movement was conceived as an ‘aria’ for the oboe. At times the melody is shared by the other instruments in the ensemble. The second movement is more of a showpiece to display the technical prowess of the oboist. In the third movement, I intended to create music which is more atmospheric and coloristic in nature, while in the final movement, a playful scherzo concludes with a bit of bravura on the part of the oboist. Lyric Passages was composed in 2010 and premiered in 2011 at an IDRS conference at Arizona State University.

Published by River Island Music (A0.1027977). This single-movement work derives its title from the Snoqualmie Pass, a route through the Cascade Mountains in Washington. The opening alternates between the piano’s bold chords and the saxophone’s melodic declarations, material that is presented throughout. Just as a visitor to the Snoqualmie area experiences rugged mountains, powerful waterfalls, and serene valleys, the music travels through rigorous as well as tranquil passages. Recorded by Caroline Taylor, alto saxophone, and Lei Cai, piano, on Ascend (Navona Records, July 2017).

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.938385 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 33 pages. Colin Bayliss #6135. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938385). This work was written between January and March 1997. It has thirteen short continuous movements, one for each note of the tone row and a resolution of the row into an adagio movement in C major. The movements are written in a time signature beginning with one beat to a bar and ending in 13 beats to a bar until the final section of the last movement. The number of bars for each movement is in multiples of 13, then 14 and onwards to 25. The harmonic language is dictated by the combinations of notes in the original row combining with a row with its inversions and retrogrades begun from the first note of each new section. The sections may be briefly summarised as follows:- 1. Adagio A basic statement of the row with its inversion and retrograde 2. Con brio A rhythmic miniature scherzo and trio 3. Allegretto Dynamic contrasts using pizzicato and glissando 4. Andante piacevole e mesto Aduet between the violins with accompaniment from the viola and 'cello 5. Agitato An atmospheric spiccato section interrupted by foot-stamping 6. Andante languido A barcarolle-like section with passages of col legno 7. Allegro A rhythmic section contrasted by passages in harmonics 8. Tempo di tango presto The tango is apt to slip into many of the composer's pieces, even where nominally 12-tone, and is never remotely serious! 9. Andante pastorale Another atmospheric section but more relaxed 10. Allegro molto A scherzando section using rhythmic retrogrades 11. Allegretto The music begins to pull into feeling of tonality around C 12. Allegro moderato This process continues with tremolandi and glissandi searching for the way to a diatonic C major 13. Molto adagio - adagietto The last traces of atonality are wiped away and the work ends in an unashamed sense of quiet triumph The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the second movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ For this 4th quartet see: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/colin-bayliss-string-quartet/id585288847.

Concert Band (optional solo piano) - intermediate - Digital Download SKU: AQ.AMC-WB-003SCO Composed by Francis Johnson. Arranged by Kenneth Amis. Music of Black Composers and Artists. Conductor score. 40 pages. Amis Musical Circle - Digital #AMC-WB-003SCO. Published by Amis Musical Circle - Digital (AQ.AMC-WB-003SCO). 11 x 17 inches. The 1818 publication of Francis Johnson's A Collection of New Cotillions marks the first known publication of original music by a black composer in the United States. A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances. The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time. This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. When there is no piano involved in the performance ,all instrumentalists should ignore the “opt. tacet instruction and play everything.

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1297060 Composed by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance,Traditional. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #887184. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1297060). Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch organist and composer who lived from April 1562 to October 16, 1621. He was born and died in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed various music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann. Sweelinck's Echo Fantasias are significant for several reasons:Innovative composition: Echo Fantasias were a unique form of composition during Sweelinck's time, blending elements of traditional fantasias with passages dedicated to echo effects. This experimental approach showcased Sweelinck's creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of musical expression. Emphasis on the moment: Unlike Sweelinck's larger fantasias, the construction of Echo Fantasias was less strict, focusing more on the immediate musical experience than the overall design. This emphasis on the moment allowed for greater freedom and spontaneity in the performance of these pieces. Stylistic range: Echo Fantasias encompassed various styles, juxtaposing fantasia-like elements with passages dedicated to echo effects. This stylistic diversity added depth and complexity to Sweelinck's compositions, making them engaging and intriguing for both performers and listeners.
