This piece is written in rondo form and features a dramatic opening that propels the piece to the restless A section. A lyrical B section contrasts the intensity of the A section, but that serenity is cut short as the section has an aggressive closing theme that drives back to the A section. An enigmatic and omenous C section is introduced, experimenting with different themes and keys before concluding with a heroic theme in C# major. The A and B sections return, this time with variations, and the piece concludes with a furious coda that brings the sonata to a dramatic close. This piece is written in a neo-classical/-romantic style and would be a great stand-alone piece in a recital.This piece is for advanced pianist, and contains 28 pages of music. .

The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor Quasi una fantasia, Op. 27, No. 2, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata, is a piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was completed in 1801 and dedicated in 1802 to his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. The piece is one of Beethoven's most popular compositions for the piano, and it was a popular favorite even in his own day. Beethoven wrote the Moonlight Sonata in his early thirties, after he had finished with some commissioned work; there is no evidence that he was commissioned to write this sonata. The first edition of the score is headed Sonata quasi una fantasia, a title this work shares with its companion piece,Op. 27, No. 1. Grove Music Online translates the Italian title as sonata in the manner of a fantasy.The title could also be interpreted to imply ...as though improvised. The name Moonlight Sonata comes from remarks made by the German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab. In 1832, five years after Beethoven's death, Rellstab likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Within ten years, the name Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was being used in German and English publications. Later in the nineteenth century, the sonata was universally known by that name. Many critics have objected to the subjective, romantic nature of the title Moonlight, which has at times been called a misleading approach to a movement with almost the character of a funeral march and absurd. Other critics have approved of the sobriquet, finding it evocative or in line with their own interpretation of the work. Gramophone founder Compton Mackenzie found the title harmless, remarking that it is silly for austere critics to work themselves up into a state of almost hysterical rage with poor Rellstab, and adding, what these austere critics fail to grasp is that unless the general public had responded to the suggestion of moonlight in this music Rellstab's remark would long ago have been forgotten. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. Since the court of Anhalt-Cöthen was Calvinist, Church music was limited to congregational psalms and hymns. Bach’s work during this period consisted of writing chamber music for the Prince, who was an accomplished violinist, gambist and harpsichordist. Other works from this period include the Cello Suites, the viola da gamba sonatas, the Flute sonatas and the partita for solo flute and the Orchestral Suites. The Sonata presented here is in the four movement “Church Sonata†style. The first five sonatas all share the same principal of Slow-Fast-Slow-Fast with a generally unified three-voice “Trio Sonata†texture. Passages which include double stops have been arranged as grace notes, which should be performed rapidly, but with a sensitivity to creating the necessary resonance which suggest implied chords.
