Fourteen pieces for organ, dedicated to a “beloved friend, Fr. Teodoras Brazys,†presents the largest collection of works for this instrument in Naujalis’ oeuvre. Like Naujalis, Brazys was the graduate of the Church Music School in Regensburg. These fourteen preludes for organ appear to be written in expression of deep affinity and gratitude to a like-minded friend who shared similar values. Some of Naujalis’ organ preludes have been included in music collections abroad – by Mieczysław Surzyński in Warsaw and Joseph Joubert in Paris. Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929.A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.

An original and completely NEW piece for the piano, never before published. 2mins approx in length. Great for showmanship.This is a semi-classical and dynamically mildly challenging piece that can be played to entertain, as an interlude or prelude or for an impromptu performance. It’s also useful as a piece to test the range and performance of an unfamiliar piano. Could be used for music study, sight-reading or for a grade piece (if selected).It starts in the scale of D harmonic minor harmonic then surprises with a switch to D major and teases with a potential modulation to A major that never quite happens as the G sharp is stubbornly avoided. The piece uses virtually the whole span of the keyboard and so shows off some flying hands (and a couple of cross hands for good measure). The pedal is used for good effect though this should become intuitive.The piece has some time signature changes that are involved in the effect of the piece and there is some subtle syncopation linked into that. The tempo starts on Andante but gradually increases in pace finishing on Allegro in the coda that contains a couple of sets of flourishing semi-quavers that can be made to mimic demi semis depending on the actual tempo adopted.Being a very expressive piece, there is scope to vary the dynamics and tempo to explore expressive possibilities.The piece was first performed in public to pilgrims whilst on a Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage in 2013 before it was put into manuscript.

Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit. Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557). A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.Jeffrey Biegel.
