Louise Farrenc was a profoundly influential French composer, performer, professor, and author. Though she would ultimately become quite a sought-after performer, her potential as a composer was recognized quite early on. Women were not permitted to enroll in conventional composition classes at the Conservatoire de Paris at the time, but, she did receive private lessons from Anton Reicha, the professor of composition there. Years later she would receive a permanent appointment as Professor of Piano at the same institution, a position she held for thirty years. She was the only woman during the 19th century to bear that title. Her piano etudes possess pedagogical value as well as great beauty and character. These works lend themselves quite well to the guitar duo setting. While I have rendered all of Farrenc’s melodies quite faithfully, I have taken liberties with the accompaniments in order to make them more idiomatic to the guitar. Likewise, many of the effects of which the guitar is capable have been brought to bear in ways that deviate from the original intent of the etude. Alternatively, the challenges that some of these etudes were meant to address for the piano student are amplified by this adaptation. For example, etude 5 is intended to enable the piano student to improve the coordination between their left and right hands. It certainly presents a challenge in that regard to the guitar duo!These selections are entirely suitable for guitarists with limited experience, though they could, of course, be beautifully realized by players with a great deal more experience as well.Louise Farrenc était une compositrice, interprète, professeur et auteure française profondément influente. Même si elle deviendra finalement une interprète très recherchée, son potentiel en tant que compositrice est reconnu très tôt. Alternativement, les défis que certaines de ces études étaient censées relever pour l'étudiant en piano sont amplifiés par cette adaptation. Par exemple, l'étude 5 est destinée à permettre à l'élève de piano d'améliorer la coordination entre ses mains gauche et droite. Cela représente certainement un défi à cet égard pour le duo de guitares !Ces sélections conviennent parfaitement aux guitaristes ayant une expérience limitée, même si elles pourraient bien sûr également être magnifiquement réalisées par des musiciens beaucoup plus expérimentés

These pieces can be linked together as awhole, in that order. The duration is of 5 minutes. They can also be played separately, orgrouped by two (Bartoquades I et II b, duration 3’). The same approach governs the writing ofthese compositions : taking model on works of the repertoire and transforming them as muchas possible while keeping a lot of important parameters.There are many cautionary accidentals. They are not enclosed in brackets to avoidoverloading writing. They are not systematically mentionned. In case of doubt, one willconsider the logic of the composition. When useful, one can distribute differently notesbetween the 2 hands on the condition of respecting the balance between voices. The sign *[on measure 80 means chromatic cluster (F-F#-G). Marie-Agnès NATAF was born on March 2, 1952 at Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the suburbs of Paris, Before deciding to devote herself completely to music, she began by studying both mathematics and musics at the same time. She had a varied base in her musical training, which allowed her to understand the teaching of her main teacher Narcis BONET. She studied the piano, chamber music, musical analysis, harmony and also to a lesser degree the flute, counterpoint and conducting. As a pianist, she received a First Prize in Piano and in Chamber Music at the Orsay Conservatory, the Gold Medla at the National Music School of Cahcan and the Artist Diploma at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – in the class of Germaine MOUNIER. For composition, she studied with Narcis BONET (who later invited her to the Conservatoire Américain of Fontainebleau as accompanist and teacher of French Diction), Yoshihisa TAÃRA, and Edith CANAT de CHIZY. Having taught for a time at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, she is currently professor of piano at the Conservatoire Erik Satie of Villebon-sur-Yvette, Marie-Agnès Nataf has a double career of performer and composer. In both areas, she is especially attracted to chamber music, for the rich musical and human exchanges that this type of music permits. Even though research has shown that Handel did not compose this work, this concerto by Henri Casadesus has remained a staple in the viola repertoire. Very few students have the opportunity to perform the work with orchestra. Keyboard accompaniment provides the melodic lines and harmonies, but it is not the same feeling as performing with a string ensemble. Hearing the individual parts adds to the ensemble experience. This arrangement for three violas is designed to provide this ensemble experience. It is intended for three students all working on the this concerto by Casadesus. The Viola I part is the solo viola part as it appears in the original, with bowings, fingerings and cadenzas provided by the arranger. The Viola I part also plays in the tutti sections as needed. The Viola II part consists mostly of the melody in the orchestra tutti sections, as well as harmonizing lines with the Viola I part. It starts off simply but when the melody repeats the left hand part starts taking off and both hands are busy from then on. I wrote this piece when I first moved back to Sydney to the suburb of Seven Hills, so named when its first farmer declared it the seventh hill from Parramatta, an early city west of Sydney. Having just moved here from a small country town, I look out at Sydney from the top of that hill and the vastness of good things to come that I can envisage is what inspired this music.

Après avoir été quelque temps éloigné de la composition classique, j'ai décidé de me lancer un défi et d'écrire un court morceau de guitare par jour. Je l'ai fait pendant un mois et j'ai fini avec une vingtaine de "Sketches". L'idée de départ était de réaliser des pièces courtes pour les enfants. Certaines se sont révélées trop difficiles pour les étudiants et pourraient donc devenir des pièces plus longues à l'avenir. D?autres, je n?ai tout simplement pas beaucoup aimé. Au final, j'ai sélectionné les 10 Sketches qui m'ont le plus plu. Ces 10 morceaux sont destinés à des joueurs de niveau intermédiaire et chacun d'entre eux se concentre sur un aspect technique ou musical. After being some time away from classical composition I decided to challenge myself and write one short guitar piece daily. I did it for a month and ended up with around 20 "Sketches". The original idea was to make short pieces for children. Some turned out to be too difficult for students, so they might become longer pieces in the future. Some others I just didn't like that much. In the end I selected the 10 Sketches that I liked the most. These 10 pieces are intended for intermediate level players and each of them focuses on a technical or musical aspect.
