Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. This instrument consists of a gnomon (Greek for knower), a long pole or incline, whose shadow is cast onto a flat stone or metal plate, that either lies on the ground or is erected onto a wall. This plate is marked with the hours of the day, and the gnomon's shadow passes over the marks. More than just an ancient timepiece, these instruments are doorways to the eternal past, and prophets of the eternal future. They bare witness to the infinite fleeting-ness of the lives of human beings. Unlike a modern watch or digital clock, in which every second enjoys its own momentary significance, the hours as marked by the sundial flow into one another in a continuous stream, that is ultimately timeless. The final hour of any mortal creature is, in this way, no more significant than the first, and all our hours seem insignificant in the context of the cosmos' grandness. Etched upon a great many sundials, in Greek, Latin, English, German, or French, is a motto designed to inspire human beings to consider these truths. Why so many sundial makers felt the need to inscribe on their creations their own philosophies and musings is unclear. Yet, each of these mottos seems contrived to express the contemplations of time and eternity so integral to the sundials' existence. Mottos such as umbra sumus (we amount to shadow) often hold multiple meanings. The we referred to can be the hours, which seem extant only because of the shadow passing over them. Or it can refer to the ephemeral nature of our lives, which on the grand calendar of eternity are so short as to be nothing. Or perhaps it warns that time itself is no more than an illusion; a shadow. Whether they are existential, humorous (I only count the sunny hours), or offer advice (use the hours, don't count them), these mottos are intended to give us pause: to compel us to look for a moment, not at the fleeting significance of our mundane lives, ticked away as they are in tiny hours, but to consider the eternal time that lies beyond us, and to therefore be briefly in contact with it. This composition, approximately an hour long and written for piano trio (Piano, Violin, and Cello), intends as its goal the same purpose as the mottos that inspired it. To transport those who listen to it (listen not merely hear) away from the earthly, and into the cosmic. Each movement is named after a different motto. The mottos, their English translations and the locations of the sundials that bare (or once bore) them is listed at the front. This is one hour, hopefully, that will not simply fade away, but rather will be one spent in the company of the eternal. .

Published by David Musgrove (A0.575305). Italian composer Giovanni Croce (1557-1609) was mostly prominent as a madrigalist, and a highly respected composer of his time. He produced less music in the choral style of the Gabrielis, which is perhaps why his music is less well known than theirs today. Generally lighter and clearer in texture than Giovanni Gabrieli, of whom he was an exact contemporary, his music nevertheless has much to offer audiences. St Helen's church in Hollinfare celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1997 and invited the gentlemen of Manchester Cathedral Choir to sing at the celebratory service. The service included a Te Deum and Jubilate, which I wrote especially for the purpose. The Te Deum is a full setting with organ and alto, tenor and bass singers. The Jubilate is a psalm chant. Both are available on this site. The sound sample in each case is the original performance.The words of the Te Deum are: We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. Where Is JesusInspiration January 1st, 2021 was the start of my official retirement from a wonderful company that I had been employed at for 40+ years, Cirtronics Corporation. Where Is Jesus was my first retirement music so to speak. A 2 measure musical idea came to me in early January. Several weeks later I had the overall structure completed and started inputting the score into my music program. At this point I had no lyrical ideas, however with Easter approaching it occurred to me that the musics dramatic content leaned heavily towards Good Friday, in spirit. As I pondered that, I couldn't help but wonder what the disciples thought when Jesus was taken. Certainly they would question where he was, question what had happened. Thus was born Where is Jesus with the lyrical content asking and then answering. The Music The music is comprised of an A section which begins with the Tenors and Altos singing Where Is Jesus. The choir then responds (in chronological order, as recorded in the Gospels ) with lyrics that describe the brutality that Jesus endured. Here the weight of what has occurred is felt with the lyrics and music evoking great emotion. The B section follows; a retrospective look back sung by the soloist, stating that all had transpired as foretold, or as stated, by Jesus and the prophets. A C section is then introduced which contains the hope then, and the crux now, of our faith deaths chain cannot have its reign, he will rise, he will rise. After a short piano interlude we are returned to the A section, now modulated to a higher key; here the most emotional section of the music is felt with the raw truth of what has happened. He is nailed to the cross, he has died, we are lost. The piece then ends as it started Where Is Jesus, to be answered three days later.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God ♫ piano solo arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Martin Luther wrote Ein Feste Burg sometime between 1527 and 1529. (Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853. ♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.†♫ In his lifetime, Luther made 3 major contributions to the Church: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language (producing a translation of the Bible into German), and the birth of congregational singing. In Roman Catholic churches of his day, only the cantor and a chorus sang the mass in Latin.
