The meter than changes, feeling a little more urgent and a heartbeat is introduced in the left hand which remains for most of the work. This can be interpreted as a fetal heartbeat, the heartbeat of the singer or the listener. It ebbs and flow, becoming at times more urgent and then more restful. The modulation into the third verse is coupled with a key change, intended to convey a stronger, more sorrowful emotion. The work ends in quiet with the person alone. Alone. This is the seventh installment in my Contemplative Spirituals for Piano collection.

Not So Quiet Please is one of five transcription/Arrangements (Carioca, Hawaiian War Chant, Well Git IT, Oop Bop Sh' Bam) I did for the Buddy Rich Retrospective at the Kool Jazz festival in 1982. After transcribing the originals I updated & re-arranged them to Buddy's liking without obscuring the intent of the originals. This arrangement is a composite of two recordings Buddy did of Quiet with Tommy Dorsey. The solo trumpet (first time at M. 9) can be played with all four trumpets both times if you choose and certain sections can be altered to suit your performance. We agreed on adding the eight bar shout after the drum solo to make the ending a little less anticlimactic. If you prefer, you can jump to M. 85 after the drum solo like the original. The drummer can stay on the toms and bass drum for the entire piece or alternate with a regular ride/hi hat swing pattern.

English lyrics were later written by Gene Lees. The Portuguese title refers to the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro.Tony Bennett recorded the first popular English cover of Quiet Nights with new lyrics by Buddy Kaye in 1963.  Numerous English cover recordings then followed sometimes credited to Lees and/or Kaye and Lees, including the Andy Williams recording of the song with English lyrics, reaching #92 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 in the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart in 1965. Also receiving air-play, contemporaneously with Andy Williams' recording of Quiet Nights, was Kitty Kallen's version. Practice Tips: In order to play this piece, you must be able to play octave chords with multiple notes and be able to fluidly switch hand positions. Keep in mind that an F-flat is an E, an E double-flat is a D, and a B double-flat is an A. The third beat of measure 22, then, is a third: A-C. The right hand ostinato (repeating pattern) will get annoying if you play the B-flats too loudly. Instead, voice the lower notes whenever the pattern appears. The left hand has the melody in the second two lines of the piece. Make sure to voice the top of all of the chords. When the right hand enters with the same melody, it also continues some of the opening ostinato – make sure that the theme is clearly heard. Don't get too loud in measure 15. Remember that the loudest section is still to come! There are a lot of notes in measures 21-26. If you're not careful, it will sound muddy and dull. Give the most attention to the top note of the right hand and the bottom note of the left hand – this will help make your sound more clear. If you are having problems with some of the jumps (such as the left hand in measure 23), make sure you have a good fingering and then drill it multiple times. Start at a very slow metronome speed and gradually move up by 5 BPM until it gets too hard. If you do this day after day, you should eventually be able to play it! If this piece is too difficult, there exists an alternate version in C major. Most of the hard jumps have been removed. The end is also slightly different and should be easier to voice.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775995). Viola Quintet (Unquiet Parables) (2009) was commissioned by the Vienna Soloists and is dedicated to Jack Melby and Jane Thompson. The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The starting point for the music is dissonant cadential figuration centered on Ab (taken from the voice leading of American colonial-era music). Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate a sonority formed from perfect 5ths one semitone apart. Irregular phrase lengths and cadences are used as the basis of the work’s large-scale structures. The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for the instruments in solo. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interrupted periodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet. The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody in turn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a re-articulation of the cadential figuration. The third movement, Ductia, is energetic and driving. A ductia is a Medieval stamping dance resembling the estampie. The driving (yet sometimes off-kilter) character of the dance is interrupted by a recollection of the first movement’s material. The final resolution of the extended cadential figurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.
