The Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1 beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for Brass Quintet was compiled by Respighi as a Piano transcription in 1917 and is based on a Renaissance collection of works for Lute by Molinaro, Galilei (father of the famous Galileo), and two other anonymous composers from that era. The four movements are titled: 1. Simone Molinaro, 1599 2. Vincenzo Galilei, 1550's 3. Villanella (anonymous late 16th century) 4. Passo mezzo e mascherada (anonymous, late 16th century) This 16-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers and a joy to perform.

Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. Published by Thinkling Music (A0.1210402). “If music be the food of love, play on …â€Â TWELFTH NIGHT MUSIC is a concert suite drawn from my incidental music for Shakespeare’s play.  This arrangement for wind quintet was an easy transition from my original instrumentation of flute, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, and trombone; the trumpet part went easily into the oboe, and the trombone was written in about the same range as French horn.  Translating to this more established standard ensemble makes the piece much more accessible to a wider range of musicians worldwide than the fairly unusual instrumentation employed for the original theatrical production. First performance in Temecula, California, April 24th, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet. Duration approx. 7 mins.info@ronlevymusic.com.
