Where Is JesusInspiration January 1st, 2021 was the start of my official retirement from a wonderful company that I had been employed at for 40+ years, Cirtronics Corporation. Where Is Jesus was my first retirement music so to speak. A 2 measure musical idea came to me in early January. Several weeks later I had the overall structure completed and started inputting the score into my music program. At this point I had no lyrical ideas, however with Easter approaching it occurred to me that the musics dramatic content leaned heavily towards Good Friday, in spirit. As I pondered that, I couldn't help but wonder what the disciples thought when Jesus was taken. Certainly they would question where he was, question what had happened. Thus was born Where is Jesus with the lyrical content asking and then answering. The Music The music is comprised of an A section which begins with the Tenors and Altos singing Where Is Jesus. The choir then responds (in chronological order, as recorded in the Gospels ) with lyrics that describe the brutality that Jesus endured. Here the weight of what has occurred is felt with the lyrics and music evoking great emotion. The B section follows; a retrospective look back sung by the soloist, stating that all had transpired as foretold, or as stated, by Jesus and the prophets. A C section is then introduced which contains the hope then, and the crux now, of our faith deaths chain cannot have its reign, he will rise, he will rise. After a short piano interlude we are returned to the A section, now modulated to a higher key; here the most emotional section of the music is felt with the raw truth of what has happened. He is nailed to the cross, he has died, we are lost. The piece then ends as it started Where Is Jesus, to be answered three days later.

At the end of the program, the entertainment director presented me with a Christmas gift bag. Inside were Christmas cards from many of the residents expressing to me their holiday best wishes and how much they appreciated and enjoyed my once a month concerts. I was deeply touched by all who wrote words of kindness, thoughtfulness and gratitude. After the performance, I left feeling inspired to write a special song for all of them. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN is that special song. I printed copies of the music and words which I presented to the Atrium residents. At the next First Friday, January 2007 concert, I performed it for the first time. This special song is: “Dedicated to all the wonderful people who live at the Atrium Retirement Community, December 2006.†The sheet music is clearly notated with meaningful lyrics, chords, piano accompaniment and vocal part. It makes a wonderful song for concluding concerts that audiences will love and appreciate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. Auld Lang Syne is a popular song, particularly in the English-speaking world. Traditionally, it is sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. By extension, it is also often heard at funerals, graduations, retirements, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. The text is a Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 but based on an older Scottish folk song. In 1799, it was set to a traditional tune, which has since become standard. The poem's Scots title may be translated into standard English as old long since or, less literally, long long ago, days gone by, times long past, or old times. Consequently, for auld lang syne, as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as for the sake of old times. This SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet arrangement gives each player an opportunity to play the melody. It is suitable for a wide variety of concerts, performance settings, or other occasions. It was introduced by Judy Holliday and Sydney Chaplin in the musical Bells Are Ringing in 1956. Judy Holliday and Dean Martin sang the song in the 1960 film of Bells Are Ringing. Martin then recorded it for his 1960 album, This Time I'm Swingin'. Tony Bennett recorded the song in 1956 and continued performing it until his retirement, at Radio City Music Hall, in 2021 at the age of 95.
