I set this for three women's voices and obbligato flute, one of a series of works with similar textures. The Wassail Song exists in many variants throughout the British Isles. I'm not familiar with another that uses the term 'leathern ratchin skin.' I find the regional variants in tune and text charming. There is no 'Urtext.' It gives a window into the time of tradition, before the rise of mass communication.I made this arrangement for a chorus I sing with; they premiered it on their 2006 holiday program. This deceptively simple tune trades voice pairs and stays with the hearer. Prætorius published it in his book Musæ Sioniæ (1609). The text is 'macaronic' - which means it contains verses in multiple languages. The text begins in Latin, switches to German, then repeats the Latin phrase. This was a fairly common usage around 1600.This instrumental piece can be performed on studio programs, as special music in a church service, particularly a service of lessons and carols. Those Who Are Wise, an anthem for SATB choir with obbligato bassoon and text from the Book of Daniel, inspires wistful and tantalizingly beautiful images which I hope to have captured.The very quiet piece should be sung throughout with a straight tone. The dynamic indications are not exaggerated: diminuendos at the ends of phrases should be taken to nothing. If singers run out of breath while holding one of these notes they should not rearticulate the pitch. The bassoon - which you may take as the voice of wisdom - must never be covered by the voices.The anthem is suitable for any memorial service or as special service music.Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the skyand those who lead many to righteousnesslike the stars forever and ever- Daniel 12:3 The cover image, taken by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, shows a cosmic rosebud blossoming with new stars. Even though the Nembutsu comes from a reluctant heart,anyone who recites it never fails to see Amida welcoming him to his Pure Land; so great is the merit of the Nembutsu. For this reason, we should rejoice at having encountered the Original Vow.Delusion is the nature of ordinary beings. Apart from delusion, there is no mind in us. If we recite the Nembutsu while resigned to the fact that we are to remain ordinary beings full of delusion until death, we shall be received in welcome by Amida; then, as soon as we mount the lotus seat, our mind of delusion will be turned into that of Enlightenment. The Nembutsu that is uttered with the mind of delusion is like a lotus flower unstained by the muddy water. There should not be any doubt as to our attainment of birth.We should not be concerned about our delusion, but reflecting on the shallowness of our mind of faith, continually recite the Name in earnest.
