They both date from after the 1856 death of Robert Schumann when Brahms was residing in Detmold and had access to an orchestra.Brahms had a goal of reaching Ludwig van Beethoven's level in writing symphonies, and worked long and hard on his first symphony, completing it only in 1876 when he was 43 years old. As preliminary steps in composing for orchestra, he chose early on to write some lighter orchestral pieces, these Serenades.The second serenade was first sent to Clara Schumann, who was delighted by it. It was written in 1859 and dedicated to her.The first public performance, reportedly for full orchestra (version lost?), was in Hamburg on 10 February 1860.Brahms himself reworked the piece for piano 4 hands in 1875.The same year he revisited the orchestral version, this time for a small chamber orchestra.The new scoring was for :piccolo,2 flutes,2 oboes,2 clarinets (in A for movements I, IV, V; in C for movement II; and in B flat for movement III),2 bassoons, 2 horns, violas, cellos, and double basses.(omitting violins, brass, and percussion)The five movements take approximately thirty minutes to perform.Allegro moderato (A major)Scherzo. It consists of brief chordal statements followed by two-part counterpoint using all the topographical, contrary-motion symmetry available. C# min and Ab Maj are two keys which lend themselves to topographical symmetry, since they both have four black keys in use. Advanced level at tempo, slower makes it a bit more palatable for an intermediate player. ALL fingerings are mirrored, and indicated for both hands in between the treble and bass clefs.The sections move between C# min, E major, and C # Major. All chords are fully mirrored as well. Chopin’s dark, dramatic B minor Scherzo, full of suspense and wild agitation, has a contrasting slower middle section with a lyrical quotation from the Polish carol-lullaby Lulajże Jezuniu (Hush Little Jesus). It is this middle section of the Scherzo that has been adapted in this arrangement for intermediate pianists. The key has been raised a half step to C major from the original key, but the dynamics, articulation and pedalling remain virtually unaltered. Despite a certain amount of simplification, the essential character of the music still remains. The music of Chopin is often beyond the reach of many pianists, especially during their initial years of study. This new arrangement offers piano students a chance to enjoy playing one of Chopin’s finest lyrical passages without the technical challenges of the original work. With a performance time of just under three minutes, this arrangement would be ideal for a school recital concert program. This trio was composed in August and September of 1978 and first performed on 5 October of that year at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.In every respect except its concision, it is modelled upon the chamber music of Max Reger: the oblique, floating tonality and the dance-like rhythms.Of its four movements, the first three are all written in 6/8 time, but they are nonetheless in three different meters: a slowish two, a very fast two, and a slow six.The first movement is in sonata form; its tonic triad does not appear in root position until the recapitulation.The scherzo is in G minor, with a trio tune in D-flat; nothing is lingered over, and it is all done in scarcely more than a minute.The slow movement is in C major, but spends most of its time roaming around distant harmonies -- and showing that they are not really so distant after all.The finale is a double fugue in sonata form.

Artaria Editions AE436Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785. This sonata is the most virtuosic and imposing work in this genre that the composer wrote. Of particular interest is the use of a slow introduction with lyrical violin solo, the long Adagio with its alternating solo passages, and the playful final Scherzo which bears a thematic similarity to the now-lost original third movement of Kraus's Violin Concerto (VB 151). Indeed, this complex work merits the rubric Great C major.Allan Badley.

The piece is not complex but its pace requires good dexterity to play it well at tempo. ISBN 9790570484355.This quartet was composed during Dvorak's time in America, during a summer vacation in 1893. It was written in Spillville, Iowa, which at the time was home to a large Czech immigrant community. Dvorak seems to have found the natural country surroundings much more to his liking, having spent much of his previous time in the country in New York. The work was written very quickly, being sketched in three days and finished in about two weeks. In this quartet, Dvorak finally seems to find a balance between his melodic invention and a clear structure. Many writers have tried to find specific 'American' features in this work - from pentatonic melodies to native Indian tunes to American birdsong - but in general such specific references are doubted. The first movement moves from passages of great harmonic stillness through a much more dramatic development section that takes the music through fugato section before recapping the original material. The second movement features a simple, pentatonic melody over a pulsing accompaniment. This melody is shared between the highest and lowest parts, before being developed in an extended middle section until the bass flute restates the original tune while the accompaniment thins out completely. The third movement is a variant of a traditional scherzo. It features two tunes, the main melody being a sprightly tune full of off-beats and cross-rhythms. The alternate melody is actually a variant of the main scherzo theme, but in a minor key and at half tempo. The final movement is in a traditional rondo form. The main melody is once more pentatonic, the B section is more lyrical, and the C section is a chorale theme.
