From the Shadow's Edge was commissioned by horn player in the US Air Force Bands, SSgt Alena Zidlicky, to honor her grandmother Beluse Urlich Zidlicky (Babi), who escaped the oppressive Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. For brass quintet and percussion, the horn is featured. The music of this composition begins in aural darkness, as if immersed in an inescapable shadow. The tense harmonies and contrapuntal motions of the brass are accompanied by two heartbeat motifs, in the tuba and bass drum, conjuring sentiments of fear and uncertainty. Emotions swell as the solo horn enters with contrasting triplet rhythms that struggle against the complex mixture of duple strains throughout the other parts. This dark introduction serves as a prelude to the above storyline, which transitions quickly (and trepidatiously) out of the shadow. From rehearsal letter B through the remainder of the piece, hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow’s ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture of the quintet as a whole provide feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism. Nothing exudes heroism more than a soaring solo horn! This composition celebrates triumph over evil, whether during life or in death, and those who press on with a brightness of hope even in the darkest shadows that life can cast, as exemplified in the life of Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky.

Plato's Fire is an allegory to the haunting shadow images projected on blank rock walls that were meant to frighten chained inmates, though in reality these images were created (behind the inmates without their knowledge) by harmless objects and people passing in front of a fire. Â The prisoners were scared by the pictures they were told instead of learning the innocent truth that was merely behind them. Â The music resembles the tribal ceremony, with a heavy percussive bass imitating drums and sonorous melody, in which one instance of this performance fabrication takes place.

The composition 4 Prague Poems of Altered Minds for a classical string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) and electronics and has been written by an award wining composer Elia Cmiral. The composition is in traditional four movements, it can be performed together with electronic pre-recorded material or as an option together with film produced and directed by Elia Cmiral. The composition expresses the feeling of hopelessness and despair by the breakdowns of values in our societies, reflects the change in the human minds in a global crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Composition has started during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed last year (2021) premiered live with the film in Prague, Czech Republic by a prime string ensemble Epoque Quartet that also played the whole piece in the film. The visual part of the project has emotional attachment to the city of Prague, each movement brings poetic visions of the city, raising the questions - Did we really lose ourselves? Is humanity going to destroy itself with its endless and arrogant greed? Where are we heading? After three dark movements we find in the last movement a hope in human creativity, love and finding a light in the end of the dark tunnel. Movement I – Desolated City and its Living Shadows (8 min), fast and rhythmical Movement II - Tears of a Dark River (10 min), slow and emotional Movement II - Anguish and Rage (4 min), extremely fast and dissonant Movement IV - Faith in Hope (6 min), medium tempo, rather emotional Performing Options: Option 1. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale A setting of an excerpt of RÃo de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) by Alfonsina Storni (1938) Copyright © 2020 Adrienne Inglis Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both.
