If Franz Liszt composed a Bagatelle without tonality, why not a milonga without tonality. This piece is placed somewhere between classical music and new tango. Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305 Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. My second string quartet Aqua Vitae is a portrait of the natural water systems that bring clean water from the great mountain that shadows Hobart, Tasmania, through various rivulets back to the river, where it can be purified by evaporation and return to the top of the mountain to begin the cycle again.The opening section uses a blend of folk and old liturgical styles to suggest the purity of the source of the rivulet at the top of the mountain. This then gives way to a section illustrating the growing streams as a magnet for local life – using fragments of bird calls and pizzicato water “plops”, and incorporating a canon of a falling figure alternating and superimposing triplet and semiquaver rhythms representing the turbulence of waterfalls. A sharp turn into the controlled water flow through the city finds urban noises (again using the grace note “flicks” from the birds earlier but in more man-made context) and the eerie sounds of the underground pipes that divert the flow, before the water tumbles into the river and is once again drawn into the sky to be spirited away to the top of the mountain.Thanks to Anita, Emily and Nara for their recording of the piece linked below.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

The German expression Zwischen den Jahren (literally Between the Years) refers to the last days of December (from Christmas) and the first days of January (up to Three King's Day). An English equivalent might be Boxing Week. This piece is called this way because it was composed ... between the years! Concretely, on 31 December 2009 and 1 January 2010 in the small village of Worpswede, North Germany. Musically, the piece is mostly based on major seventh chords with their fundamentals notes related by thirds. The harmony has also a Lydian flavor which becomes most obvious in the central section. Structurally, is roughly A-B-B-A, whereby the reappearance of a previous section is quite varied. I composed Dissolved over the stiflingly hot and humid Sydney summer of 2018-2019. It’s all about finding relief from the heat by plunging your body into the sea at twilight. I went with some friends to Sydney’s Coogee Beach one late afternoon, just as the sun was setting. We parked in a side street and walked barefoot across the road, still warm from a full day of blazing sunlight, over the prickly grass, down the concrete steps onto the soft sand and into the ocean. The feeling of being cleansed by this salt water was so strong, I felt compelled to write a song about it. Sally Whitwell Long shadows stretch into still summer nights The atmosphere lays heavy, liquefied Warmth rising from the asphalt, once alight From the sun, now disappearing Drawn to dark water, we become amphibian Bare toes swallowed by waves on wet sand Deionisation, we hold it in our hands And the fever’s disappearing We are dissolved The water absolving us We are evolving On the ever revolving earth Ever evolving, revolving, dissolving Water abating and we’re dissipating As the world turns and our hearts burn With love

Specifically inspired by bug shadows on the surface of a creek: Water striders, dragonflies, other, etc. Intermediate piece for Horn and Piano. Showcasing flexible slurs, long phrases, and a comfortable range for the Horn Player. For the Pianist, mostly uniform underlying rhythmic pattern for lower voicing and trading melody with the Horn part in upper voices.This duration of the piece is a little over 3 minutes.
