First of all, my enormous gratitude to Deborah Leath Rentz for the source material: Songs and the Spirit: Hancock Shaker Village's Musical Legacy, Volume I. Transcriptions of Hancock Hymnal : 1850. In 1997, Mark Ludwig commissioned me to write a work based on a Shaker song. Ms. Rentz provided me with a lovely song, Grateful Remembrance, from her collection. The result was SEPTET: Variations on a Shaker Tune. Hancock Shaker Village is in many ways also a set of variations. It begins with a Prelude of my own devising. For the rest of the work I chose five songs from Ms. Rentz's book which provide a glimpse of a typical day for the inhabitants of this religious community. The first song, Pillar of Fire, greets the dawn and the rising sun. The second song, Glean with Care, is about the orchards and the gardens. The third, Sweet Home, is about the religious life and home. The fourth, Quick, a lively dance number, prays for God's power and grace. The last song, Farewell Dear Crossbearers, is for the dearly departed. Die Ureinwohner werden mit den Zivilisierten konfrontiert, wobei Shakespeares Weitsicht die gängigen Vorstellungen seiner Zeit stört, indem er andeutet, dass der sogenannte „Wilde vielleicht nicht der ist, für den man ihn hält. Ich habe mir vorgestellt, dass zwei Texte in zwei verschiedenen Sprachen aufeinandertreffen wie ein Echo der unmöglichen Begegnungen zwischen Menschen aus Europa, die nach Gold und materiellem Reichtum dürsten, und einheimischen Kulturen, die sich ganz der wissenschaftlichen Beobachtung der Gestirne und der Anbetung ihrer Götter hingeben. So werden einige Repliken aus Shakespeares Der Sturm auf Englisch gesungen: Dabei handelt es sich um eine Replik Calibans, der seine ganze Menschlichkeit offenbart, wenn er den Geräuschen der Insel lauscht, sowie die wenigen vorausgehenden spöttischen Repliken der Narren. Die Worte in der Sprache der Maya bezeichnen die Tage des Maya-Kalenders. Sie werden wie Zaubersprüche ausgesprochen, die von Prospero selbst rezitiert sein könnten und nähren diese Mischung aus okkulten und magischen Kräften, die den Sinn des Seins und dessen Beziehung zum Anderen hinterfragt. Die Solovioline und das Publikum werden vom Doppelchor eingerahmt, der damit sowohl die Grenzen der Insel als auch Prosperos‘ magischen Kreis absteckt. Die Solovioline ist der Katalysator für alle Geräusche der Insel, die Caliban erfreuen oder beunruhigen. (Thierry Pécou).

Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

The music and text of ‘The Sense of a Place Will Remain’ was inspired by pictures of an early carved stone cross and a tenth-century Viking burial stone on the island of Inchcolm in Scotland. First performed by Inchcolm New Music Ensemble 29 June 2007, conductor Steve King. Instrumentation is flexible; the following is a guide: Part 1 - Violin 1, flute 1 (doubling piccolo if possible) oboe 1, Part 2 - Violin 2, flute 2, oboe 2 (doubling tenor recorder if possible), clarinet 1, trumpet Part 3 - Viola, clarinet 2, horn in F, Eb horn (2 players doubling harmonicas in C) Part 4 - Cello, bassoon Part 5 - Double bass, bass guitar (or Cello 2 - playing as if usual bass clef, but an octave lower where possible) SATB voices (doubling metal spoons and pitch pipes) Optional:Percussion (one player) - claves, glockenspiel (could be a child’s toy instrument such as an ‘Angel’ glockenspiel), mark tree, spring drum (thunder shaker), frame drum, musical jewelry box (or similar clockwork device).Should a glockenspiel not be available, a special part has been created which arranges the glockenspiel for two flutes, together with the other percussion music. This special part is not visible in the score. Keyboard instrument with sustaining capability - piano sound Instructions: Wind players can breathe ad lib. during any very long notes. From letter D onwards non-wind players who are not soloists blow across the top of small bottles. The pitches produced are not specified, but they should not be shrill. A soft breathy tone is preferred. About half of the voices play pairs of metal spoons (share printed part between two singers and anyone not holding the music holds metal spoons). Hold the spoons one in each hand, and strike the larger ends together. Spoons are struck together where shown with a large patterned note head. Strike rapidly where a tremolo sign is given. Four singers play pitch tuning pipes: 1 Soprano and 1 Alto play viola/cello pitch tuning pipes, 1 Tenor and 1 Bass play violin pitch tuning pipes Pitch pipe playing is indicated with square note heads - player should breathe ad lib. during very long notes. Where there are very long sung notes, the singers may stagger breathing ad lib. Spoken sounds are indicated with x note heads and with the text in italics. There are many pauses. These can be of varying duration, but on the whole they should not hold up the momentum of the piece, but be of sufficient duration to establish the solo and pitch pipe notes. Re-Invention (Toccatissima) Aside from being an obvious (if hackneyed) reference to the commissioning ensemble, Trio 180, the title 180 Shift well describes the large-scale dramatic action of the piece: from beginning to end, it traverses an expressive distance of 180 degrees, from elegiac sorrow to hot-footed sizzle. 180 Shift is cast in three movements. Each movement is based on the same thematic material, although that material is transformed continuously across the span of the piece. Movement one, Elegy and Variations consists of a series of a theme, six free variations of the theme and a quiet intermezzo before the sixth and final variation. The movement is melancholy, reflective, and generally subdued in tone. Movement two, entitled Song and Dance (Shake, Rattle, and Roll) sees materials introduced in the Elegy transformed first into a introspective song and finally into a vigorous, gigue-like dance. The three parts of the movement are characterized, respectively, by shakes (tremolos), rattles (in the piano; we’ll know them when we hear them) and rolls (arpeggios). Movement three – Re-Invention (Toccatissima) is fast and virtuosic, a (mostly) two-part invention that sees the basic thematic material re-invented once again. 180 Shift is dedicated, with great affection and respect, to Trio 180: Ann Miller, Nina Flyer, and Sonia Leong.
