She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)Long before pandemic prisoned us,the trees knew how to guard their placewith roots and shade.Moss found how to hug a stone for life.Every stream knows how to move in place,stay home and yet flow outward,sending bounty far.Now is our time to practice-now to sing from balconies,now send words of comfortby any courier,now to hoard lonesome generosity-and then to shine in all directions like stars.Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. This organ work is based on the ancient Puer Natus chant, but instead of opening with the original chant melody, it starts with a newly-composed countermelody. Then after the eventual introduction of the chant tune itself the two melodies weave in and out of each other, like friends sharing Christmas joy. This simple and prayerful arrangement of Puer Natus is ideal as a soft and somewhat short prelude, processional, or reflection for Advent or the Christmas and Epiphany seasons. It is perfect for Early-Intermediate level performers - either those who are learning organ directly, or pianists learning organ skills - and/or requires very little practice time for the more advanced organist. On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.This arrangement is intended to be performed by TTBB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the bass 2s should be able to sing down to a D2 (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.This arrangement is intended to be performed by SATB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the basses and alto should be able to sing down to a D2 or an F3 respectively (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

The second carol is a French-Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for orchestra with 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time the carol changes there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement. Within the orchestra parts, the melody switches between woodwinds, brass, and strings several times, exploring several different sound colors throughout the piece.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. A few times the bass bells have quick passages that will require sharing of bells or a lot of practice. For orchestra, this piece should be playable by most intermediate players, though some brass parts push the comfortable extremes of the instrument.
