Vocalises.In this piece, the voice and the breath play an equal role in executing the musical text, as the breath is (at times) independent from the voice and equal to it in an almost contrapuntal relationship. This is not an expressive piece in the more standard way in which a singer employs all of his personality in an attempt to express emotions or other expressions of the ‘self’. It is rather a sketch using the voice and the breath like a small brush painting a line. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998874). The Fragment series of short piano pieces was conceived for pianists of almost any standard. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment III is in a simple ternary shape. The outer sections focus on multiple unrelated arpeggiated reharmonisations of an initial four note motif. The opening section does this via an exploration of flat keys, while the final section does so through a sequence of sharp keys. A contrasting middle section is more chordal but continues to develop the key motif, building to a climax on quartal harmony. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. As in the other Mosaic pieces, a series of early, unrelated sketches were reworked to create this piece. Mosaic III gradually introduces a rocking bell-like ostinato, adding a descending scale of harmonics. Indeed, the whole piece explores the harp's heritage as a folk instrument. There are tonal references to various modes, incorporating grace notes and folk-like melodies in the central section. The work is cast in a symmetrical arch form (ABCBA), with the opening section returning at the end, in reverse. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of harpist, including students and advanced players.

She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques. Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin. Notable recent engagements include the 2016 National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competition (multiple entrants); the Opera Night at North benefit concert with students of IU's top-ranked opera program (among them Accidental Tenor Andrew Lunsford); and two long-term cruise ship performing contracts with violinist Amy Schlicher as the Duo del Mare.When not working on one of her many concurrent musical projects, Nicole might be found maintaining The Collaborative Pianists’ Community on Facebook, cuddling the nearest dog, looking for opportunities to maintain her Spanish and Italian language skills, and raising and releasing monarch butterflies. The 48 Preludi of the Venetian composer Renato de Grandis (1927-2008) were created, in large part, in the years 1998-2002. It was only subsequently that he arranged them in 4 cycles of 12 preludes each, while also drawing back on older compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.

I completed it in January 1966. At the time I was in my 2nd year at College and very influenced by Bartok. In form, it follows traditional patterns but the harmonies were more mid-twentieth century. The first movement was played in a BBC competition in 1967 then not again until a former orchestral student of mine asked to play it for his RNCM finals a few tears ago. I've just typed it up into Sibelius and revised the second movement in places. Apologies to Andy - the second movement was sketched and not performed until he played it. I think it reflects where I was at musically at that stage and I still feel it is quite charming, if a little niche market! The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

Odd-numbered movements focus on atmospheric textures, while even-numbered movements dwell on stars and galaxies. Movement I, Vocalise I, is inspired by street lights casting a copper hue against a dark cobalt sky. Movement II, Choose Something Like a Star, shifts between subdued and bright registers of the voice and piano to illustrate the contrast of the stars in the night sky. Movement III, Intermezzo, drives the listener to a country road on a cloudy night with pine trees on either side while the high beams illuminate the path. Frequent 16th notes in this movement create a motor-like motion. Compound meter with quick 16th notes in Movement IV, Returning, imparts a buoyant character that floats through different galaxies along with frequent use of Lydian and Myxolydian Modes and the Acoustic Scale. Movement V, Vocalise II, paints a picture of a hilly grass field and a parking lot on a cloudy and rainy night, surrounded by lights with a muffled glow.
