The Concert à 9 Parties, 50:1, features an eccentric instrumentation of flute (ordinary, or that at the octave [i.e. piccolo], or the two combined), alto chalumeau, oboe, two violins almost entirely in unison, viola, two concertante contrabasses, and continuo.The work is in fact a three-movement symphony, as indicated by the original title that Telemann crossed out before he began composing: Grillen-Symphonie in the Italian, French, English, Scottish, and Polish styles. The original manuscript is in the Dresden library: Manuscript: Mus.2389-O- 123 (RISM-A/II-212000134). When Johann Georg Pisendel stayed in Venice, he studied with Vivaldi and be friended as well. Vivaldi dedicated a number of his violin concertos, sonatas and a sinfonia to him. Surely during the period between 1716 and 1717 Pisendel was in tour in Venice, we can asumme that he brought this concerto with him to Dresden to be performed there. [This edition is based on this source]A copy of the parts, conserved in the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Günther Uecker [de] in Schwerin.Another copy of the parts conserved in Cividale del Friuli.The Grosso Mogul title appears on the Schwerin manuscript, which was written before 1717. According to Michael Talbot, the name of the concerto can possibly be linked to Domenico Lalli’s Il gran Mogol opera libretto, a setting of which had been presented in Naples in 1713. Later settings of this libretto include Giovanni Porta’s, staged in Venice in 1717, and Vivaldi’s RV 697 (1730).The Schwerin and Cividale del Friuli copies of the concerto contain two variants of extended cadenzas for unaccompanied violin, in the first and last movements of the concerto. He presumably received his first lessons from his father, who was sonatore di viola at the court of the Gonzaga in that city. Later he got further education probably by Salomone Rossi and Giovanni Battista Buonamente. From 1626 to 1629, he worked as concertmaster in Dresden. In Dresden he worked with Heinrich Schütz, who interested him in composing. From 1629 to 1631, he was a prominent member of the electoral court orchestra in Bonn, until he returned to Italy, where he worked in Parma and later in Lucca until 1635. In 1635 he held position at the court of Carlo I Cybo-Malaspina, Prince of Massa, and between 1636 and 1637 in Gdańsk. From 1638 he lived in Vienna, where he died of the plague probably a year later.He is considered to be one of the earliest violin virtuosos and he made many contributions to violin technique. Nothing better could be expected of a composer who found inspiration even in crows and in the out-of-tune playing of village musicians! Although this concerto, which the manuscript attributes to Telemann, bears traces of his personal style, other features, such as the exceptionally high solo part, leave room for doubt. At a structurally important point in the first movement the soloist produces no more than a succession of repeated notes, ‘a-a, a-a’, which infect the other parts as well. Of course, this is the vowel that the frog croaks, given a distinctive tone-colour by use of the open A string and stopped D string. But worse is to come. In the second ritornello the orchestral violins ‘forget’ the beginning of their theme, whilst the cello inappropriately pushes its way into the foreground. The setting of the second movement (Adagio), probably a moonlit stretch of shallow water, then audibly inspires a pair of courting frogs to make sweet music together. We are given the opportunity to rejoice in their croaking offspring in the concluding Menuet and its rapid Double. This movement entirely dispenses with concertante sounds of nature and thereby betrays its origins in the suite, where it always takes its accustomed place in Telemann’s music. If we knew that a satirist was at work in this ‘Relinge’ Concerto, someone who was deliberately exhibiting all these deviations from good taste, then we could infer with some certainty that the composer is indeed Telemann. Vivaldi’s violin concerto in D major, RV 208, survives in three manuscripts:Vivaldi’s autograph score, conserved in Turin.A copy of the parts, conserved in the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Günther Uecker [de] in Schwerin.Another copy of the parts conserved in Cividale del Friuli.The Grosso Mogul title appears on the Schwerin manuscript, which was written before 1717. According to Michael Talbot, the name of the concerto can possibly be linked to Domenico Lalli’s Il gran Mogol opera libretto, a setting of which had been presented in Naples in 1713. Later settings of this libretto include Giovanni Porta’s, staged in Venice in 1717, and Vivaldi’s RV 697 (1730).The Schwerin and Cividale del Friuli copies of the concerto contain two variants of extended cadenzas for unaccompanied violin, in the first and last movements of the concerto.The present edition present the modern edition of the cadenzas contained in Schwerin and Cividale del Friuli manuscript.Although the cadence for the first movement is almost identical in both manuscripts, the cadence for the third movement is different in each one of them. The contrast between the lavishness of the slow movements and the rhythmic richness of the fast movements is masterful. While the slow movements offer a melodic and harmonic discourse of overwhelming beauty, the rhythmic resources of the fast movements are astonishingly forceful. To mention just a couple of examples, the fugal beginning with three parts in unison at a distance of one quaver in the second movement, or the impetuous syncopated rhythms of the final Allegro. Goldberg was reported to have studied with both J.S. Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, J.S. Bach’s eldest son, though the periods of study are not known; Goldberg may have studied with J.S. Few know his work today. However, a look at the works he has left us and his life as a musician reveals a great virtuoso who deserves to be rediscovered.The relatively recent work done by Professor Talbot in his work: A Thematic Catalogue of the Instrumental Music of Martino Bitti (1655/6–1743) [ Michael Talbot (2015) A Thematic Catalogue of the Instrumental Music of Martino Bitti (1655/6–1743), Royal Musical Association Research Chronicle, 46:1, 46-94, DOI: 10.1080/14723808.2014.986256] has brought to light some of Bitti’s most interesting compositions. This is the case of this Sinfonia, listed as anonymous until that moment in the archives of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB).The only copy of this work is in the SLUB, as part of the Pisendel collection (Schrank II), the manuscript Mus. 2-R-8, 102, entirely copied by Pisendel. It is very probable that Pisendel copied the sonata during his trip to Italy and his passage through Florence in 1717, where he would meet the crème de la crème of the Florentine violinists: Fanfani and Bitti. Pisendel kept in his collection nine sonatas by Martino Bitti.Bitti’s virtuosity is noted in this work. The large number of double stops and their use in the complex counterpoint of the second movement demand a high technical mastery from the performer.

Albinoni, too, was captivated by the young virtuoso, to the extent that Pisendel returned to Dresden with three sonatas for violin and continuo copied by the Italian master himself. But, although we can assume that all three sonatas were dedicated in some way to Pisendel, it is the Sonata for violin and continuo in B flat Major that bears a special dedication on its frontispiece: Sonata a Violino solo di me Tomaso Albinoni Composta p[er] il Sig:[re] Pisendel. And not only this dedication but also certain musical aspects lead us to believe that the sonata in question may have been written specifically for Pisendel. The sonata goes beyond Albinoni’s usual technical requirements, exploring the upper register of the violin in a way that appears only rarely in other sonatas by this Italian. And, in the second movement, marked Allegro, we find an unusual and virtuoso use of triple stops in a fast semi-quaver rhythm. This singular effect is used by Albinoni in only one other work, the Concerto for violin and strings in C Major Co2, although with a strange and interesting nuance: of the versions of the concerto that remain we find this technique only in a manuscript version in Dresden, the version that Pisendel brought back from Italy in 1717 together with the sonata. Other versions of the concerto, such as the one published by Roger around 1717, or other manuscript versions do not contain the triple-stop passages. This suggests that they may be a personal touch added by Albinoni in recognition of Pisendel’s remarkable performing skills.

In the spirit of the time Blainville was a practical musician, composer, theorist, historian and, in some way, an encyclopedist. As practical musician and composer he was cellist and it is known that he played his own compositions at the Concert Spirituel in Paris, but neither his performances nor his compositions met with outstanding success.As theorist Blainville claimed the discovery of a third mode (mode mixte) between major and minor, unfortunately his harmonic theories did not have the expected success.As historian and encyclopedist we found his work Historie générale et philologique de la musique, published in Paris in 1767. The work is in consonance with other contemporaries works such as Rousseau’s Dictonaire de Musique (1768) or the Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne, published around 1780 by M. de Laborde and Pierre Joseph Roussier. As in these works, the work of Blainville broadly covers the musical knowledge, including theoretical-musical, stylistic, historical and ethnographic aspects. Framed in this last aspect we find a chapterdedicated to the music of the Turks. And it is in this chapter we find the musical pieces used in this arrangement.
