Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459173). Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velazquez wrote Besame Mucho, words and music, in 1941. When she died in 2005, The New York Times said this of the song in her obituary: 'Bésame Mucho' is not so much an enduring standard as a global phenomenon. Translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists, the song has been an emblem of Latin identity, an anthem of lovers separated by World War II and perennial grist for lounge singers everywhere. Virtually every professional recording musician has covered it, from the Beatles to Placido Domingo. This arrangement borrows its 6/4 time signature (and not much more) from the 2001 recording by Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur. It's a little more accessible than Ferguson's screaming big band chart.This one is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. It will probably be less easy for you to understand than for me to explain it to you; for you are, I think, the most perfect example of feminine impenetrability that could possibly be found. We had spent a long day together, and it had seemed to me short. We had promised one another that we would think the same thoughts and that our two souls should become one soul; a dream which is not original, after all, except that, dreamed by all men, it has been realised by none. In the evening you were a little tired, and you sat down outside a new café at the corner of a new boulevard, still littered with plaster and already displaying proudly its unfinished splendours. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. In fact, my brand new handchime choir played this in church after only three practice sessions. The beauty is that the handbells/chimes play only chordal accompaniment to a flute or piano melody. There is so much flexibility in this piece. Our choir performed it with handchimes and flute. You can use any C instrument for the melody, even piano. I've also included a full piano accompaniment. The audio sample is a computer-generated handbell and piano combo. This piece will give your beginners confidence to tackle harder music and give them a feeling of pride to be able to participate in worship in such a musical way. Four pages total (p.1 = handbells/chimes; p.2 = flute or C instrument melody; pp. 3-4 = piano accompaniment and melody). Key of C, no key changes. She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.
