Inspiration from this piece was found while I was just messing around doing classical improv on trumpet, when I decided that I could write more off of what I had done. Since parts of this piece was originally written from an improvisation, I decided to leave some things, such as dynamics and some tempo changes, up to the performer. This is written for late high school and early college level players.

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

No clarinet duet has made me stop in rehearsal and just smile so much from how cool things sounded. - Marcus Moore, clarinetist on Duo MpingoDuo Mpingo is an approximately 6 minute crowd pleaser that is perfect for any occasion. It is a modern but accessible piece that is loosely based on the lifecycle of a mpingo, or African blackwood, tree. It is a relatively advanced piece but could be performed by advanced level students. Duo Mpingo can be programmed equally well on environmental-themed or any other type of concert.Program Note: When I began to research the mpingo (African blackwood) tree in preparation for writing this piece, I came to learn that it is a fascinating tree. It has the ability to survive fires, it does not reach maturity for about 70 – 100 years, and it improves soil fertility. However, it is endangered in several African countries due to illegal logging and over-harvesting, in part because of its beautiful dark heartwood. The outside of the mpingo tree looks like any other tree with a light brown color; the inside, however, is a gorgeous, dark brown-black color – a color you have seen if you’ve ever seen a clarinet, as clarinets, along with other western instruments, are made out of the dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. I had never stopped to think about why wooden clarinets have such a dark color instead of what one typically thinks of as a wood color. I was astonished by the hidden beauty of this tree and what secrets lay inside.Duo Mpingo is somewhat programmatic in that it loosely chronicles the imagined life of a mpingo tree. There is a short section close to the middle of the piece (the inner part of the piece, if you will) that is meant to evoke the beautiful, mysterious, endangered dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. The direction to the performers for this section is solemn, prayer-like, reverential, which is how I feel we should look at every tree – not as something in our way that needs to be cut down, but with reverence for the amazing living things they are.Duo Mpingo was commissioned and premiered by Daraja Music Initiative and Clarinets for Conservation to promote a sustainable planet. It is also slightly inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues from the Well Tempered Clavier and Muse’s song “Butterflies and Hurricanes†from the album “Absolutionâ€. It is meant to show the ups and downs of the relationship, especially how the more developed it got the more problems arose. It starts with a cloud-like scene meant to depict mild attraction. It then develops into infatuation in measure 21 as the main character gets to enjoy his experiences with his partner. It lasts for a little while as he finds newer and newer aspects of his partner that he enjoys. He then returns to a moment of stability with the restatement of the opening theme, and then tries again to get back into those moments of bliss. But this time something goes wrong. The character doesn’t quite realize it until it is too late, but a rift appears in the relationship. This is shown in the D Minor section, as the main character is sad and longing for things to go back to how they were, but is just stuck. After a while of trying different things, a settlement is reached and the two get closer again in the relationship, seen in measure 174. Except this time things are different, they are close to the bond shown earlier, except not quite there. This can be seen with the rearrangement of voices in regards to the melody, such as the cello having the melody except the violin in measure 190. Although the two try their best, the relationship once again reaches a rift between the two, seen with the reemergence of the D Minor section. They try once again to patch things up, but end up becoming unsuccessful and breaking apart. The final sections starting at measure 246 depict the sadness and anger that follow, before eventually reaching a resolution back into the home key of F Major.

Notes from the composer:The OSRS Lo-Fi Jams series is inspired by my favorite game: Old School RuneScape. Each jam is inspired by something specific from OSRS. Lo-fi music aesthetics correspond to many of my favorite things about OSRS. It is filled with repetitive or meditative patterns, enjoyment can be experienced without perfection, there is ample opportunity for creative freedom, and there is far more depth to be discovered than the casual observer likely imagines is possible. The jams are meant to be fun for the performer and allow for creative freedom within the composition’s given restrictions. Imperfections are accepted. Prioritize enjoying your instrument and the music.Bankstanding is for flexible instrumentation but was composed with the solo alto saxophone in mind as the performing force. It may be performed on any instrument or instruments. Octave transposition to play in a comfortable range is encouraged. Repeats are performed as many times as desired by the performer. When performed by multiple musicians, each musician chooses their own repeat structure. Minimums and maximums for duration and instrumentation can be seen below, but it is highly recommended to stay close to either the minimum or suggested duration and instrumentation rather than the maximum. Articulations are performed at the discretion of the individual performer. Suggested articulations are provided by dashed slur lines. If desired, a performer may insert quarter rests to breathe.
