Viola Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1138960 Composed by Patrick Prejean. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 11 pages. Patrick Prejean #739248. Published by Patrick Prejean (A0.1138960). I - La Violence (Violence) With some elements from Prokofiev's Sonata for 2 violins, this movement is about violence and it's many forms hence the title La violence. There is nothing nice about this movement. II - This movement is untitled as I did not wish impose a mental image upon the listener and performer. You'll hear the first fragment of Dies Irae that emerges from the shadows. This is the only happy movement. III - Angoisse (Agony) This is a harkening back to all the bad theory homework over the years in college. From the bad counterpoint to the solemn melody that appears later, this is a of a person who hides their pain away lest it spill out and cause horrendous repercussions. IV - La valse/devenir fou (Waltz/Going crazy) With elements of Ravel's La Valse and Weinberg's Cello Concerto, this movement represents a quick escalation of a deteriorating mental state hence the going crazy title. For a time things seem to dissipate only to come back even worse than before it crashes. For John Grigsby.

Beethoven: Adagio from Sonata Pathetique for Viola & Piano

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549634 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516289. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549634). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano.

String Ensemble,String Quintet Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813642 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards,World. Score and parts. 8 pages. Regis Bookshar #6434411. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813642). Viola Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Viola Quintet, consisting of 5 Violas, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check back periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Purcell's Allegro from his Sonata for Trumpet will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

String Trio Cello,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201012 Composed by W. A. Mozart (1756 – 1791). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Standards,Wedding. 70 pages. Jmsgu3 #798993. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1201012). Sonata No. 6, “Durnitz†for String TrioScore and performance parts:  Score: 32 pages. Duration: ca. 28:54Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, also known as the Durnitz Sonata, is a solo piano piece that was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious piano sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument. The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by a series of contrasting themes and variations. The development section explores new harmonic and rhythmic territory, while the recapitulation brings the movement full circle with a restatement of the main themes.2.   Rondeau en Polonaise - The second movement is a graceful and elegant rondo in the style of a polonaise, a popular dance of the time. The main theme is a lilting melody that is first presented by the right hand and then repeated with variations throughout the movement. The middle section features a contrasting theme in a minor key, which is then developed and expanded upon in the latter half of the movement.3.   Theme and Variations - The final movement is a set of six variations on a theme, which is introduced at the beginning of the movement. Each variation explores a different aspect of the theme, from playful embellishments to dramatic flourishes. The final variation brings the piece to a rousing and triumphant close.Overall, Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, is a masterful example of the composer's virtuosity and innovation and remains a beloved and influential work in the piano repertoire. Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284 is also known as the Dürnitz Sonata because it is believed to have been composed for Count Johann Joseph Anton von Dürnitz, an accomplished amateur flautist who was a patron of Mozart.Mozart was in Munich in 1775, and he met Dürnitz there. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. It is believed that Mozart composed this sonata specifically for Dürnitz, who may have performed it with Mozart accompanying him on the piano. There is no concrete evidence to support the theory that the sonata was named after Dürnitz, but it is widely accepted as the most likely explanation for the nickname. In any case, the sonata remains one of Mozart's most popular and beloved works for solo piano.

Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and Piano

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1032818 Composed by Daniell Mattern. Contemporary. Score and part. 58 pages. Daniell Mattern #5721229. Published by Daniell Mattern (A0.1032818). Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and PianoThe Simple Scale of the title is a series of alternating whole steps and half steps. There are three versions; any particular note will belong to two of the three. Thus, the two scales that include C go up either a whole step from C (C D Eb F F#…) or a half step (C C# D# E F#…); the third scale excludes C entirely (B C# D E F…). These scales allow for a variety of melodies, which often take on a modal character, and familiar chords, including major, minor, and diminished.Although the scale is simple, the Sonata is not for elementary players. The viola range goes to the C two octaves above middle C and there are occasional double and triple stops and stopped harmonics, and frequent meter changes. Also, the unusual scale does not fit the standard fingering patterns for either instrument. That said, the sonata is intended to be enjoyable for proficient, rather than virtuosic, players. In the introduction to the Sonata-Allegro movement, the viola explores motives and intervals, with subtle embellishment from the piano. These phrases build to a three-octave descending presentation of the simple scale; a trill then leads into the main theme. The piano sets up a jaunty accompaniment pattern, over which the viola plays the theme in measure-long segments. The second theme is a long, legato line in the viola that spans two octaves. The viola then sets up a two-measure ostinato, joined by a lumbering piano bass, before the piano treble floats on top with a melancholy closing theme. The development section plays mostly with the main theme, shifting meters as the two instruments engage in dialog. A bridging trill takes us into the recapitulation, but now the viola plays the jaunty accompaniment pattern, and the piano has the main theme. After the return of the second theme, varied in its accompaniment, the piano presents the ostinato of the closing theme, and the viola takes the melody, leading to a quiet and playful finish. In the second movement (Song), the piano begins a slow, rather dark theme, joined by the viola, and ending in a rising question that leads into the second section. Presented simply by the viola, this lilting 7/8 theme has a folk-song quality. It is repeated and embellished several times before the first theme returns, ending in a loud and angry exclamation. The Scherzo is a 6/8 whirlwind. The viola presents rapid repeated notes punctuated with three rising or falling notes; the piano enters gradually until both are giving a forceful statement. In the middle section, the viola sets up a whirling pattern with a drone, while the piano plays a dark version of the closing theme from the first movement. The first theme returns and the movement gallops to a rapid finish. The Rondo begins with an introduction that explores octaves and trills, leading into the main theme, with slightly dissonant 4/4 viola measures alternating with 7/8 answers in the piano. Bridging measures in 5/8 take us into a relaxed, waltz-like interlude of solo viola. A fast section with a touch of fugato follows, with the main theme presented in diminution by the viola at the end. This leads into a second interlude, this one exploring octaves, trills, and clusters in unmetered fragments that the instrumentalists play at their own tempos. The viola then emerges with a confident new theme, joined after a while by the piano. The main theme then returns in a rollicking 3/4 version that brings the piece to a close.

Large Ensemble Trumpet,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813646 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Instructional,Multicultural,Standards,World. Score and parts. 13 pages. Regis Bookshar #6434413. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813646). Viola Septet with Trumpet Solo - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). However, this particular arrangement is for a Viola Septet, consisting of 7 Violas, with a Trumpet Solo, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Digital Download SKU: A0.497953 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Pietro Prugna. Baroque,Christmas,Classical,Instructional,Wedding. Score and parts. 8 pages. Published by Pietro Prugna (A0.497953). JS Bach has written many beautiful melodies. This is one of them. However, as it was originally written for solo violin, due to the technical difficulties playing it, the melody is often not fully appreciated. Besides, due to the nature of the violin, the accompaniment may sound a little jerky when played on solo violin. This arrangement allows the 1st Violin to fully express the beauty of the melody, with the support of the quartet. It can be performed in a String Quartet. Also, music students may play together to appreciate the different parts of the music, and appreciate the genius of JS Bach in reducing it for 1 violin. The pdf contains the Full Score for String Quartet and Set of Parts (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello).
