We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribed and published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1, 2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones.The choice of texts for my American Death Ballads was inspired partly by Copland’s Old American Songs, which I deeply admire, but more by my dear friend and colleague the late Conrad Susa’s Two Murder Ballads. The ingenuity of Susa’s accompaniments for his ballads in imagining anew the original source material owes a great deal to Copland’s accompaniment for his songs. Though the content of my songs is completely original and not based on preexisting melodies, I have tried to expand on this further, as the texts are much longer, and go through many different moods and characters. The four texts I chose include stories about murder, death, and dying. Though two of the texts were written in England, they traveled to the colonies almost immediately. The subjects of the texts had spent time in America, and their stories were well known to Americans.Wicked Polly is a cautionary tale. Polly has lived a dissolute and immoral life, saying, 'I'll turn to God when I grow old.' Suddenly taken ill, she realizes that it is too late to repent. She dies in agony and is presumably sent to hell; young people are advised to heed. My musical setting is stately and preacherly in character for the narrator; for Polly it becomes pleading and remorseful. The Unquiet Grave was brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, the great American field collector of folk music, by English folk singer Shirley Collins. The text is taken from an English folk song dating from 1400. In The Unquiet Grave, a young man mourns his dead lover too fervently and prevents her from obtaining peace. The dead woman complains that his weeping is keeping her from peaceful rest. He begs a kiss; she tells him it would kill him. When he persists, wanting to join her in death, she explains that once they were both dead their hearts would simply decay, and that he should enjoy life while he has it. My setting is in a flowing Andante with a rocking accompaniment. Three voices are delineated here: the narrator, the mournful lover, and the dead lover speaking from the grave. The Dying Californian first appeared in the New England Diadem in 1854. Its lyrics are based on a letter from a New Englander’s sailor to his brother who is dying at sea while on the way to California to seek his fortune in the California gold fields. He implores his brother to impart his message to his father, mother, wife, and children. My setting opens with the singer alone in a moderate dirge tempo, then, joined by the piano, moves through many tonalities and moods before ending with supreme confidence as the speaker 'gained a port called Heaven/Where the gold will never rust.'Captain Kidd was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy and murder in 1701. The American connection to this ballad is that Kidd escaped to America and for a time lived in New York and Boston, though he was a wanted criminal by the British authorities and was extradited to Britain, where he was hung at 'Executioner’s Dock.' The lyric was printed in Britain in 1701, traveling to the colonies almost immediately. Though the didactic tone of the text is similar to Wicked Polly, it expresses no regret until the final lines: 'Take warning now by me, and shun bad company, / Lest you come to hell with me, for I must die.' My setting is fast and spirited, expressing the confidence of a man who lived life as he wanted. -David Conte.

Both PIANO parts carry the melody at times beginning with PIANO 1 for the verse. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. Cycles for bassoon quartet honors those who lost loved ones in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The title reflects both the living earth upon which we live and the fortitude of humanity. The first movement depicts serenity interrupted by bombastic resemblances of earthquakes and tsunamis. The movement is called The Living Earth as our planet is still evolving by constantly building up pressure and releasing that pressure. The opening serene section uses key clicks and wind sounds in the serenity section. Pitch bends in the melody are designed to resemble a shakuhachi. Syncopated explosions that use polytonal pentatonic scales represent the earthquake. Rapid ascending and descending scale patterns depict the resultant tsunami. The second movement is a hymn song for the souls of the dead. It is called Ashes to Ashes as it represents a different cycle, one of death and rebirth. Pentatonic scales abound once again but this time they modulate gently from one tonality to another instead of being used simultaneously. A song of redemption and hope for the survivors is the theme for the third and final movement, Resiliency of the Spirit. It depicts the strength of the human spirit and it is the cycle of joy growing out of sorrow. Taiko drumming is the major influence in this movement. It begins with a foot stomp followed by the drummers warming up. A staccato rhythmic section that imitates the drums follows this. A hymn-like theme in pentatonic is interpolated over this rhythmic drumming bringing the movement and the piece to a hopeful conclusion.

English.Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.

It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. The title reflects both the living earth upon which we live and the fortitude of humanity. The first movement depicts serenity interrupted by bombastic resemblances of earthquakes and tsunamis. The second movement was a hymn song for the souls of the dead and is called Ashes to Ashes as it represents a different cycle, one of death and rebirth. A song of redemption and hope for the survivors is the theme for the third and final movement Resiliency of the Spirit.

Published by John Ross (A0.1137248). “For the Fallen†was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba†and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow oldâ€) has become known as the “Ode of Remembranceâ€, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Postâ€. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle†portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust†compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plainâ€. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight†(reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow oldâ€. A version of this suite with organ accompaniment is also available on this website.

Duration c.5:45 (c.6:30 if performed with optional additional ending and A6 narration) For Cimbalom or other instruments, three Gongs, Bass Drum and Narrator Text: Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) / Edward Lear (1812-1888)Note: The associated recording is of the version using the text by Clementina Maria Black. First performed by Jordan Wright-Murray on 30 May 2019. The Cimbalom part may be played on a chromatic hammered dulcimer or hackbrett or any other instruments. Gongs - ideally 3 bossed/tuned gongs, non-specific pitches: high, medium, low. Bass drum - ideally an orchestral bass drum. The octave lower transposition indications in the cimbalom part are optional and when given beneath two-note chords only apply to the lower note. From bar 62 to the end the cimbalom may be played an octave higher than written. The cimbalom and gongs are played laissez vibrer throughout. The bass drum is played laissez vibrer, except where marked with x on stem (for example in bar 32), indicating dead stick technique. The narrator may choose one of two texts: A: The Troubles of an Automaton (Excerpt) by Clementina Maria Black B: The Table and the Chair by Edward Lear. The start of each section of Narrator text is indicated in the score with boxed text. Where necessary the end of a text section is shown as unboxed text. The additional section after Fine 1, starting at bar 101, is optional and can be performed with or without the A6 narration. It is also possible to perform the whole piece without the Narrator, provided the texts are available to the audience.Programme note: This piece may be performed with one of two texts: 'The Troubles of an Automaton (Excerpt)' or 'The Table and the Chair'. 'The Troubles of an Automaton' was written by Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) and published in the New Quarterly Magazine in 1876. The story begins with a fictional advertisement announcing a public exhibition of Mr. Slade's Famous Chess-Playing Automaton. 'The Table and the Chair' by Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) appeared in his collection 'Nonsense Songs' published in 1870. In the poem a table and a chair go for a walk around town, become lost, are taken back to their house by a group of small animals, and then dine and dance together.
