Originally opened in 1977, the roller coaster underwent a massive refurbishment in 2005 that saw its trains and almost all of its track entirely replaced. Along with this refurbishment came a new high-energy score from Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles (2004), Star Trek (2009), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)) that features on the ride to this day. Since 2005, Giacchino has written on-ride music for each Space Mountain roller coaster at Disney Parks across the globe.

Grieg Background: Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer and concert pianist. Most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic-era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg, moreover, used Norwegian folk music in his compositions. Therefore, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is essential to realize that he did this like Jean Sibelius in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is mainly celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy), and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. There is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.  Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music to illustrate a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The space includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg depicts the exploits of the scoundrel Peer Gynt. In one favorite episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding.

Each movement progressively gains a broader perspective of time and space, from the minute movements of the hummingbird, broadening to the majesty of mountains and ending with a vast impression of traveling through the universe at the speed of light. Movement one, Trochilidae-Allegro, celebrates the brilliant animation of the hummingbird. Emily Dickenson called it a resonance of emerald, a rush of cochineal. The clarinet solo imitates its mercurial flight darting and hovering in and around the orchestra. The second movement, Spiritual Adaptation to Higher Altitudes-Adagio, illustrates he slow and dramatic ascent of the clarinet through a broad and majestic orchestral soundscape culminating with an ecstatic summit vista. Evening Snow is a SATB choral piece written for and winner of the Call for Scores St.Andrews University competition in 2015. With lyrics by Peter Davidson, Evening Snow paints the landscape and scenery of New Zealand - which can often be described as a larger and sunnier version of Scotland (my home town).. So I was keen to write music that captures both the space and surroundings of the vastness of New Zealand whilst adding a slight Scottish feel.Lyrics: So far, so late, so distant and so cold. How faint the mountains in the fading day. North of the waters, snow down to the shore. South of the waters, stone fields, storm blown thorns. Snow in the dusk now, and night winds that move. Over vast waters to the farthest stars.

Published by Lynn L. Petersen (A0.973263). Glory of the West was commissioned by Dr. Zach Buie and premiered at the College of Southern Idaho on March 3, 2020. Dr. Buie requested a new work connected with or inspired by the Mountain West region. The inspiration for this piece was the song MONTANA, which I first heard at a memorial service, a great favorite of the gentleman who had passed. The song was composed in 1910 and later adopted as Montana's state song. Glory of the West is in three sections. The first, marked Rolling Along, conveys optimism and wide-open spaces. The middle Adagio section features a descending stepwise melody followed by a soaring ascending line, reminiscent of melodic contours in the refrain of the song. The final section, marked Playfully, begins with fragments of a lively and rhythmically irregular motive, and woven throughout are echoes of the ascending lines from the previous section. The score contains the Piano and C Trumpet parts in concert pitch, and a part for B-flat Trumpet is provided as an alternate.

This work is a good grade 5 for an advanced high school or college program. It charts the continuing journey of the Hawkeye Spaceship on its journey to Planet 411, a mysterious world full of lush vegetation and unknown creatures. Follow the group as they are chased by a giant creature through the dense forests, and eventual meeting with a group of natives inhabitants. This work was to be premiered in July of 2020 by the Winds of the Mountain Empire, but unfortunately due to COVID it has been postponed. .
