Concerto for Bass Trombone and Six Players (2006) was commissioned by the CarnegieMellon School of Music for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales,director. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark†instruments– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is thefocal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with muchmaterial best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,and bitter tone throughout.Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and therest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “first†among a collection of like mindedindividuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.The opening section is marked “spasmodic.†Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to amelodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. When I finally woke up, I wrote this words in Portuguese and made a song out of it. the words go like:Ponte eterna abismo sem fundo - Vento ciclónico medo profundo - Comboio gelado lentidão d`aço - Espiral eterna suspensa no espaço - Maos agarram a vida duas barras d` aço - Corpo sacudido em espasmos de medo - Alucinação divina acordar de um sonho Eternal Bridge endless Abyss - Cyclonic wind deep Fear - Frozen Train slowness of steel - Eternal spiral suspended in space - Hands cling to life on two bars of steel - Body shaken into spasms of fear - Divine hallucination waking up from a dream

The title Toccata comes from the Italian word toccare meaning to touch and generally implies a composition that has many fast notes featuring technical and virtuosic playing requiring great finger facility. The subtitle though is Eccentric Dance and as I wrote it I had in mind the Tarantella dance originating from the province of Taranto, Italy. This dance has two aspects, a stately court dance, which you can hear in the middle section of the work and a more frenetic, agitated movement which is heard in the first and final section. This supposedly originates from the jerky, hysterical and spasmodic body actions of a victim bitten by the wolf or tarantula spider common to that region of Italy. The ‘whirling, delirium’ tarantella dance is most often written in 6/8 and is played faster and faster and ends only when one of the dancers gives up in exhaustion! Toccata was written as a test pice for the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition, 2017, and is 5.00 minutes in length.

Whispers of MortalityFourth Piano Sonata (2005) was commissioned by and is dedicated to pianist Donna Amato.The work is in three movements, each using the exact same musical material. Eachmovement presents a trajectory towards a greater integration of the disparate pieces ofmaterial.The first movement, Mourning at Sunset, presents the basic material in clearly definedblocks. An opening section of forceful, declamatory chords alternates with a more lyricalsection of interlocking lines. The forceful music returns before a slow, desolate section ispresented. This builds to a small climax before dying down again. The opening then returns.The second movement, Beyond Distant Echoes, is slow and ethereal. Sounds of distant gongsalternate with brittle, spasmodic interjections.The third movement, Whispers of Mortality, is inspired by the finale of Frederic Chopin'sPiano Sonata in B-flat minor. It is fast and fleeting and too short. The musical materialhas transformed into pure running roulades of raw notes. The movement evaporates into theuppermost register.

Summer Solstice (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist and composer Jeffrey Jacob.Though there were a number of interconnected inspirations behind the work’s conception, one of theseintentions is as a tribute to American composer Vincent Persichetti (1915–1987). Though there are nospecific quotations from Persichetti’s music, some of the textural and developmental ideas (particularly inthe fast, middle section) owe themselves to his work.The work opens in a free, declamatory manner – announcing its basic pitch material. Spasmodic gesturesintercut the resonant declamation. Amidst the bright ringing, a lyric melody tries to assert itself again andagain. A whirling and dry fast section, however, emerges; the material is put through a series of spinningtransformations, building to a ringing and clangorous climax – bathed in the white heat of the summer sun.The final section is marked “memorial candles†– distant and near candles set out on a field flicker in thesummer heat and ebbing sunlight while low, distant chimes sound the passing of time.
