Studies for Beginning Cello Students Studies that build one’s skills from open strings to using all four fingers.This volume is a collection of studies from various cellists. Those names being: Hugo Schlemueller, Carl Schroeder, Sebastian Lee, Anton Hegner, and Hermann Heberlein. Also included are several Folk songs as well as the famous Ode To Joy by the great Beethoven.Sometimes a collection such as this are useful in that they focus the students attention on a particular set of skills. In this case, I have carefully chosen and arranged each study so as to build the skills from the open strings up to using all four fingers of the left hand. Students normally find mastering one or two fundamental skills at a time much more doable and more motivating. There are many methods available but few collections that are short, remain in the level of ability for beginners, and proceed in achievable steps. This volume was created after years of teaching and seeing how useful such an incrementally arranged set of studies can be for the student. Whether a student achieves the skill in question for a certain study in a day or a week, the usefulness of the exercise remains the same.

The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. De Dionsio para Koré is a theatrical adaptation of the poetry book of the same name, which reveals the uncontrolled love of the god Dionsio for the mortal Koré. They constantly change roles in a cycle of death and rebirth. I wrote this soundtrack in a simple way. Some actors in the cast played some instruments in a beginner way, so I wrote a simple track inspired by ancient Greek music so that everyone could act and play the soundtrack with me live. In the instrumental formation, we have guitar, flute, clarinet, cello, and drums. This is piece 1 of 6 that integrates the soundtrack. The writing of the drums must be followed rhythmically as it is written, but the pitches of the notes can vary. The most important thing is that the drums are played according to the relative height (high, medium, and low). The songs are excellent for a group of beginning students to play together and practice chamber music, as they are a repertoire of easy execution and very impressive sonority. Good studies!
