Ballet Synopsis: Evil Snow Sprites make a mirror that reflects all that is mean and evil. When it shatters, its splinters drift to the far corners of the world. Gerde and Kai are two poor children who live in Copenhagen in the early 19th Century. They live innocently with their parents and Grandmother and tend a rooftop rose garden. One winter night Kai meets the Snow Queen and a splinter from the mirror enters his eye. The Snow Queen returns and abducts Kai. Although accepted as dead, Gerde deeply feels otherwise and begins her quest to find her friend, traveling through the four seasons, sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening. The Lady of Spring takes her as an addition to her fantastical garden filled with tales and dreams of the flowers who dwell there. But when Gerde sees the rose on Spring's bonnet she wakes from her enchantment. Her tears spring back the roses who tell her Kai is not dead. She flees from the garden. Gerde grows up in the wilderness and a crow says that he has seen Kai at the Palace of the Queen of Summer. They hurry there to find a magnificent ball in progress. Gerde is introduced to the Kai lookalike but knows something is not right. The Queen of Summer helps Gerde on her way and lends her a coach and gives her a magic red rose that will never fade.As coach searches for Kai, it enters the season of Autumn and is accosted by robber girl and a band of theives. They dance in an rousing, energetic dance taunting her. When the morning comes Gerde tells her fellow captive animals of her quest to find Kai and that all hope is lost. The pigeons finally tell Gerde that Kai was abducted by the Snow Queen many years ago. The robber girl overhears them and has a change of heart letting her go with her reindeer to the far North of the Snow Queen.Gerde finds Kai in the palace of the Snow Queen piecing together the evil mirror. She gives Kai up for dead but leaves the rose of summer beside him. Kai spots the rose and he sheds a tear. This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.

It has been set for choir (SSAA), piano, harp, fiddle, and flute. One of the Snowdrop’s folk names is ‘Eve’s Comforter’; another ‘Maid of February’. Candlemas Carol Maid of February, if you will, grace mantle, hearth, and windowsill. So let us all be of goodwill and gather round, together. When Winter holds the world in thrall, and ice and snow lie over all, the Maiden can at once recall, the coming Summer weather. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. When Eve and Adam left Eden fair, the snow and ice lay ev’rywhere, which filled their hearts with bleak despair, for they could find no pardon. They glimpsed the flowers of paradise, beyond the earthly cold and ice, but they could not be perfect, twice, nor get back to the garden. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. A teardrop fell from Eve’s sad eye, and froze upon the ground close by. An angel raised it up on high, and called for Heaven’s power. The ice became a snowdrop, then. Thus hope returned to Eve again. And all the people say: ‘Amen!’ in praise of Winter’s flower. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. Alan Wagstaff The legend tells that, after Adam and Eve were banished from Eden’s perpetual summer, they wandered, despondently, into Earth’s freezing winter. Eve wept as the snow fell around them. Seeing her tears, an angel intervened. He caught a teardrop when it froze and breathed on it, turning it into a snowdrop. When the angel left more snowdrops sprang up. Thus, snowdrops in Winter, serve as a reminder, that better times will come around. The tale was often recalled at Candlemas: February 2nd.

A Fugal Overture was written in 1922 by Gustav Holst. It was first performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 14 May 1923 and was used as an opening work to Holst’s one-act opera The Perfect Fool. It received its concert premiere on 11 October 1923 at one of Henry Wood’s Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts. It is an early example of neoclassicism and was influenced by the counterpoint of J. S. Bach, despite its unconventional use of the fugal process.Holst began writing the piece in the summer of 1922, having hoped to develop it into a ballet. It is divided into three sections, the fugal subject with its distinct 3+3+2 pattern, a slower section with solos at the end, and a third section where the subject returns.Although reviews of the piece were mixed at the time of its premiere, the likes of Adrian Boult have said it was “an invigorating work that could effectively start any […] concert. In more recent years, it has been compared to John Adam’s A Short Ride in a Fast Machine.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787296). Composed in 2013 for Suzanne Mueller in commemoration of her tens years as Summer Artist-in-Residence at Old Westbury Gardens, Old Westbury, NY. The opening theme counts up the decade by interval, starting with intervals of one (unison), major second, major third, perfect fourth and perfect fifth. After exploring the ups and downs of these first five years, in measure eight the count starts over and this time continues with a major sixth, major seventh, octave, major ninth and major tenth. After exploring this additional territory, a melodic section celebrates the accomplishment of ten years, which is recognized by gifts of diamonds, and this piece is my diamond for Suzanne. Just completed as a Back to School 2015 special, August 2015, by Lois Mountz, of Salem, Ohio, this composition was inspired by her summer garden where the butterflies 'play'.
